Role of Bladder EpiCheck® in Bladder cancer: from primary diagnosis to surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Cystoscopy remains the gold standard for initial diagnostic assessment and follow-up in bladder cancer (BC) patients. Novel diagnostic tools and biomarkers are needed to minimize reliance on cystoscopies whenever possible. Bladder EpiCheck® (BE) represents one such approach with encouraging results. However, its diagnostic performance at primary BC diagnosis and its effectiveness across distinct non-muscle-invasive BC (NMIBC) risk groups during follow-up have not yet been described. METHODS: Prospective case-control study between July 2018 and December 2024 including two cohorts:

Lobectomy for Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma With Minimal Extrathyroidal Extension: Does the Site of Extension Matter?

BACKGROUND: There is limited data on the recurrence risk following lobectomy in patients with microscopic extrathyroidal extension (mETE) and the significance of the site of mETE. METHODS: A retrospective study on patients treated with thyroid lobectomy between January 2012 and December 2023. RESULTS: Sixty-seven patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and mETE were included. Two patients (4.66%) experienced disease recurrence during a mean follow-up of 50 months (IQR 18.8-70.3). Twenty-five patients (37.3%) had anterior extension, 28 (41.8%) posterior, and 14 (20.9%) unknown locatio

Host and microbiome lipid metabolism in colorectal cancer development and therapy.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the most prevalent cancers, with treatment largely dependent on surgery and chemotherapy, underscoring the need for novel or adjunct therapies. Cancer cells reprogram their lipid metabolism to support proliferation, invasiveness, and chemoresistance, making it a promising therapeutic target. Although several inhibitors of lipogenesis, lipases, lipid uptake, and lipid storage are under investigation in CRC, none have yet shown sufficient efficacy. Importantly, the tumor microenvironment (TME) and the microbiome influence CRC lipid metabolism by supplying c

[Bladder sparing options for muscle invasive high risk bladder cancer].

Radical cystectomy is not a suitable option for every patient with muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Whereas radiotherapy (in combination with radio-sensitizing chemotherapy) is mentioned as an alternative in the current German S3 guideline, numbers are low in Germany compared to other countries. We try here to sum up the current evidence and data, especially regarding the definition of on optimal patient population to profit from this kind of therapy. Furthermore, we take a look at the role of cystectomy in the age of modern tumour therapy.

Development of a new nomogram for predicting recurrence in HCC with MVI following curative hepatectomy.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with microvascular invasion (MVI) carry a high risk of recurrence and poor prognosis. However, few studies have developed models to predict the recurrence in HCC patients with MVI. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for recurrence in HCC patients with MVI, which can aid in postoperative treatment decision-making. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled HCC patients with postoperative pathological confirmation of MVI from two tertiary hospitals between January 2015 and December 2020. Independent prognostic factors for recurrenc

miR-150 in cancer metastasis: Orchestrating migration, invasion, and angiogenesis through context-dependent mechanisms.

Metastasis, which accounts for approximately 90 % of cancer-related mortality, is driven by intricate regulatory networks that remain only partially understood. MicroRNA-150 (miR-150) has emerged as a pivotal, context-dependent regulator within these networks, displaying dual functionality as either a tumor suppressor or an oncogene, depending on tumor type, isoform (-5p/-3p), and microenvironmental cues. This comprehensive review synthesizes evidence highlighting miR-150's regulation of critical metastatic processes-namely epithelial-mesenchymal transition, cell migration, invasion, extracell

Invasive Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Mimicking a Dentoalveolar Abscess: Report of a Case in a 14-Year-Old Patient.

INTRODUCTION: A diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma in adolescent patients is extremely rare. When an oral squamous cell carcinoma lesion arises near the teeth and/or periodontium, it can be easily misdiagnosed as an inflammatory condition of endodontic or periodontal origin. METHODS: This is a case report of an otherwise healthy 14-year-old patient who was referred for endodontic evaluation and treatment of a soft-tissue swelling in the anterior maxilla. RESULTS: The unexpected definitive diagnosis of invasive oral squamous cell carcinoma underscores the importance of proper diagnosti

Management Approaches for High-Risk Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma with Perineural Invasion: An Updated Review.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) stands as the second most prevalent non-melanoma skin cancer worldwide, comprising approximately 20% of all cutaneous malignancies. Determining its precise incidence poses challenges; however, reports indicate a global increase in its prevalence. At the time of diagnosis, the majority of cSCCs are localized, resulting in favorable 5-year cure rates surpassing 90%. Nevertheless, a subset of patients (3-7%) encounters locally advanced or metastatic cSCC, leading to substantial morbidity and mortality. The risk of metastasis ranges from 0.1% to 9.9%, carry

A Diagnostic Nomogram Incorporating Prognostic Nutritional Index for Predicting Vaginal Invasion in Stage IB - IIA Cervical Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: With the advancements in cancer prevention and diagnosis, the proportion of newly diagnosed early-stage cervical cancers has increased. Adjuvant therapies based on high-risk postoperative histopathological factors significantly increase the morbidity of treatment complications and seriously affect patients' quality of life. OBJECTIVES: Our study aimed to establish a diagnostic nomogram for vaginal invasion (VI) among early-stage cervical cancer (CC) that can be used to reduce the occurrence of positive or close vaginal surgical margins. METHODS: We assembled the medical data of

[A Case of Appendiceal Mucinous Carcinoma with Bladder Invasion Developed from Abscess-Forming Appendicitis, Which Was Curatively Resected after Chemotherapy].

The patient was a 35-year-old man who saw his first doctor with the chief complaint of painful urination. A contrast- enhanced CT scan of the abdomen revealed a diagnosis of abscess-forming appendicitis with inflammatory spread to the bladder, and conservative treatment was decided. Since antibiotic treatment failed to reduce the size of the abscess, he underwent surgery. The bladder wall was highly inflamed, only appendectomy was performed. Pathology revealed appendiceal mucinous carcinoma invading the bladder, so he was referred to our department. Because a total cystectomy was required for

Sinonasal Chondrosarcoma With Unusual Orbital Invasion.

A case is presented of a 43-year-old male with a chronic history of progressive nasal obstruction and epiphora. MRI confirmed a heterogeneous mass involving the middle and superior turbinates with T2 hyperintense and calcified components, with extension into the inferomedial orbit. Tissue biopsy revealed a grade 2 chondrosarcoma of the conventional subtype. Endonasal wide local resection of the lesion was performed with clear margins. The patient had no functional sequelae and will undergo routine surveillance.

Preoperative evaluation of MRI features and inflammatory biomarkers in predicting microvascular invasion of combined hepatocellular cholangiocarcinoma.

PURPOSE: Microvascular invasion (MVI) is a significant prognostic factor in combined hepatocellular cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CCA). However, its diagnosis relies on postoperative histopathologic analysis. This study aims to identify preoperative inflammatory biomarkers and MR-imaging features that can predict MVI in cHCC-CCA. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled 119 patients with histopathologically confirmed cHCC-CCA between January 2016 and December 2021. Two radiologists, unaware of the clinical data, independently reviewed all MR image features. Univariable and multivariable analyses

Preoperative tracheostomy is associated with thyroid gland invasion and poorer prognosis in laryngectomized patients.

PURPOSE: Patients with laryngeal cancer may necessitate tracheostomy placement to alleviate compromised airways. However, the impact of tracheostomy on thyroid gland invasion and its implications for prognosis in individuals who further undergo total laryngectomy remains unclear. This study aimed to assess thyroid gland invasion rates and explore the 5-years disease-free and overall survival in laryngectomized patients stratified by preoperative tracheostomy. METHODS: All patients who underwent total laryngectomy for laryngeal cancer between 2003 and 2023 at a tertiary referral center were re

Neo-Adjuvant immunotherapies: Bladder cancer as a platform for drug development targeting mucosal immunity.

Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is a live attenuated Mycobacterium bovis strain, originally developed as a vaccine against tuberculosis. It is also the only bacterial cancer therapy approved by the US Food & Drug Administration for clinical use. BCG is delivered in the bladder, shortly after tumour resection, for patients with high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Modulating mucosal immunity by exposing the urothelium to intravesical BCG has been the main therapeutic strategy for high-risk NMIBC over the last three decades. Thus, BCG provides a benchmark for the clinical develop

HMG co-reductase expression and response to intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin in patients with high grade non-muscle invasive urinary bladder cancer receiving statins.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease affects over 7 million people in the UK and statins are often prescribed to mitigate cardiovascular risks. The effect of statins on a number of cancers is debated and their effect on Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) responsiveness in non-muscle invasive urinary bladder cancer (NMIBC) is not fully understood. AIMS: This study aims to explore the difference in HMG Co-A reductase (HMGCR) expression in NMIBC on immunochemistry in BCG responders and non-responders while on statins. METHOD: Three hundred and thirty-two cases of intravesical BCG treatment for high-r
