Dynamic incompetent cervix uteri. Sonographic observations.

In 15 of 56 patients with incompetent cervix, rapid changes in the degree of dilatation of the cervical canal were observed during sonographic examination, with the same degree of bladder distension. In ten of those 15 patients, the canal was seen to be completely closed at some point during the examination. Because of these rapid dynamic changes in the dilatation of the cervical canal, it is necessary to observe the cervical portion of the uterus several times during the sonographic examination, especially in patients suspected to have incompetent cervix. It is possible for the cervical canal

Observations on the pathology of non-alimentary lymphomas in the horse.

A retrospective study was carried out on post-mortem and biopsy tissue samples from 26 horses with non-alimentary lymphoma. On the basis of their histopathology and cytology, the cases were grouped into several categories: (1) Lymphoblastic lymphomas (6 cases) and primary lymphoblastic leukaemia (2 cases). (2) Histiolymphocytic lymphomas involving the skin (6 cases) or lymph nodes (3 cases). (3) Lymphomas showing follicular development (4 cases). (4) Plasmacytic lymphomas (4 cases). (5) Lymphocytic lymphoma (1 case). Most affected horses were middle-aged or old but lymphoblastic neoplasms tend

Observations on commensal rats and their status to plague in Bombay.

The distribution pattern of various types of commensal rodents in Bombay city reveals that Bandicota bengalensis constitutes the predominant commensal rodent species followed by R. rattus and Rattus norvegicus. Apart from these three types, Bandicota indica, M. musculus and an insectivore (Suncus murinus) are the three species of commensal small mammals that are frequently encountered in or near human habitations. These small mammals are prevalent throughout the year and their percentage distribution varies very little during different months of the year. None of the rodent species examined du

Observations on the interpretation of amoebic serology in endemic areas.

Antibody to Entamoeba histolytica antigen was evaluated in cases of proven and suspected intestinal amoebiasis as well as in extra-intestinal cases from an endemic area. Screening methods included the gel diffusion precipitation test (GD), counter immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) and the indirect haemagglutination test (IHA). Control populations consisting of asymptomatic cyst passers, non-amoebic individuals, patients with giardiasis and cases of enteric fever were also screened using the above tests. All (100%) cases of amoebic liver abscess and 75-80% of hepatic amoebiasis without overt abscess

Hepatic infarcts: new observations by CT and sonography.

Until recently hepatic infarcts were rarely diagnosed before autopsy and were nearly always fatal. Four cases of hepatic infarcts, three of them nonfatal, were diagnosed and followed by CT (three cases), sonography (two cases), arteriography (two cases), and sulfur colloid liver-spleen scan (one case). In three patients with multiple subsegmental hepatic infarcts, most of the lesions were round or oval and centrally located. Only a minority of the lesions were wedge-shaped and peripheral. The early lesion appears hypoechoic on sonography, and CT shows a poorly demarcated low-density region. La

Histopathological and serological observations on experimental anisakiasis of rabbits.

This study was performed to observe histopathological changes and serological reactions in chronic anisakiasis of rabbits. Each rabbit was infected per os with 30 larvae of Anisakis type I. Their sera were collected chronologically and the rabbits were killed for histopathological examination, 3, 13, 20, 30, 60, 90 and 150 days after the infection. The results were summarized as below. Most of the larvae were recovered from the stomach, but a few from the omentum, intestine, mesentery and abdominal wall. The recovery rates and distribution of worms by organ were not differed by duration of inf

Long-term observations in mild forms of cardiomyopathy.

24 patients suffering from a mild cardiomyopathy with normal or nearly normal ejection fraction and histologic evidence of cardiac fiber hypertrophy were followed-up over 5.5 +/- 1.9 years. Patients presented predominantly with dyspnea, angina and palpitations. During the observation period, the severity of symptoms increased only slightly. The ECG showed atrial arrhythmias in 34% and premature ventricular beats or conduction disturbances in the majority. During the 5.5 year follow-up period four patients had developed an intermittent III AV-block and two patients a bundle branch block. The he…

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome: observations on altered consciousness.

A young man with a previously untreated schizophrenia developed a neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) on the second day of neuroleptic treatment. The dominant symptom was deep coma. The NMS occurred on the second day of neuroleptic therapy with rapidly progressing mental deterioration, temperature elevation, and extrapyramidal signs. After anticholinergics were injected the patient regained consciousness. This suggests that a cholinergic hyperactivity in the central nervous system (rather than hyperthermia) is responsible for the disturbance of consciousness in NMS. The experimental evidence

Observations on the bony bridging of the jugular foramen in man.

The anatomical nature and pattern of incidence of bony bridging of the jugular foramen was investigated using 64 fetal crania aged nine months to term and 222 adult crania of Japanese. In addition, the region of the jugular foramen of an adult cadaver was carefully dissected in order to clarify the relationship between the cranial nerves passing through the jugular foramen and the intrajugular processes of the jugular foramen. The general conclusions concerning the anatomical nature of the bony bridging of the jugular foramen were as follows. (1) The intrajugular process of the temporal bone i

Observations on Cysticercus cellulosae in the flesh of rural dogs.

Out of a total of 150 carcases of rural dogs examined in Eastern Nigeria, 4 (2.7%) had Cysticercus cellulosae in the heart, tongue, thigh muscles and liver. Visual examination, palpation and multiple serial incision technique were used in locating the cysts. The cysts uncovered were collected in specimen bottles and transported in ice to the laboratory for morphologic assessment. The ages and sexes of the dogs were also recorded. Viable cysts were found only in young dogs. Environmental pollution with human excreta predisposes dogs to cysticercal infection. Thus environmental sanitation and he

[New observations in a case of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome].

We report about a 76 years old patient with Cronkhite-Canada syndrome. The diagnosis has been found with the following clinical symptoms: diarrhea, anorexia, alopecia, and onychotrophia. Laboratory values: severe hypoproteinemia (total serum protein 4.3 g/dl, albumin 2.4 g/dl); endoscopical and radiological findings: a generalized polyposis which involved the whole intestine except the oesophagus. As far as we saw in our literature-overview of 55 patients with Cronkhite-Canada syndrome, this patient had for the first time a carcinoma of the urinary bladder and a Bricker operation 17 years befo

Observations concerning radial neck fractures in children.

Twenty-three children with fractures of the radial neck were reviewed. Fractures with an angulation of greater than 60 degrees were treated by open reduction and internal fixation with transarticular Kirschner wires through the humerus and the radius. These broke at the joint in two patients, and we now avoid the humerus by using oblique Kirschner wires. Some limitation of movement, especially of forearm rotation, was more common in children with associated lesions of the same elbow and with open reduction. We think that this reflects the severity of the injury rather than the presence of asso

Wegener's granulomatosis: observations on treatment with antimicrobial agents.

Twelve patients with Wegener's granulomatosis were treated with antimicrobial agents, chiefly trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. The clinical course improved in 11 of the 12 patients who received this treatment. The success of antimicrobial treatment suggests the possibility of a microbial infection as the inciting cause of Wegener's granulomatosis in some patients. Alternatively, these agents--in particular, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole--may possess immunosuppressant activity.

Observations on the secondary vestibulocerebellar projections in the macaque monkey.

The distribution of retrogradely labeled cells in the nuclei of the vestibular nuclear complex following injections of horseradish peroxidase in various parts of the cerebellar cortex (except the nodulus and paraflocculus) has been mapped in the macacus rhesus monkey. In the main the findings correspond to those made in other mammalian species (cf. Table 1). The flocculus receives afferents bilaterally from the superior, medial and descending vestibular nucleus, group y, the interstitial nucleus of the vestibular nerve and also from the abducent nucleus. The projection to the posterior vermis

Fascioliasis in Spain: a review of the literature and personal observations.

The fascioliasis induced by Fasciola hepatica is a syndrome which has still not been fully clarified in this country, though the different peninsular regions are suitable for completion of the life cycle of the worm; infested animals may found throughout these regions and in almost all of them human fascioliasis has been diagnosed, with the greatest incidence in the Basque Country, Navarra and La-Rioja. This greater appearance is probably related to the dietary habits in those areas, since the consumption of water cress is undoubtedly the principal source of contamination and is entirely respo
