Unveiling the shadows: Parental perceptions and familial impact of daycare abuse of preschool children.

BACKGROUND: Preschoolers are at an increased risk of experiencing abuse, especially from caregivers. Early child abuse has adverse continuances on children's short and long-term development. The majority of previous studies were conducted in the 1990s in the United States, focusing primarily on sexual abuse. Despite the recently increasing public awareness of daycare abuse (DA), empirical studies on this topic have not yet been conducted in Israel. OBJECTIVE: The current study was designed to examine parents' perceptions regarding the DA of their preschool children. METHOD: The data were col…

Comparing perceptions of individuals who sexually offend against children versus adults.

OBJECTIVE: We examined how the age of the victim influences the public's risk assessment and punishment attitudes for individuals who have sexually offended and whether actuarial feedback influences these ratings. HYPOTHESES: (1) Risk ratings for child victim vignettes would be higher than ratings for adult victim vignettes. This effect would be driven by higher ratings for lower risk individuals. (2) Because of the increased stigma associated with individuals with child victim sexual abuse convictions, participants who rated this subgroup would be less likely than those who rated adult victi

Perceptions of exercise behavior and well-being in anomalous aortic origin of coronary arteries.

UNLABELLED: Anomalous aortic origin of a coronary artery (AAOCA) is associated with sudden death in the young. Risk stratification and management decision-making remain challenging. Data addressing post-diagnosis perceptions of exercise behavior and safety are lacking. We aimed to determine how AAOCA affects exercise behaviors, safety perceptions, and emotional well-being of patients/parents. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of AAOCA patient-/parent-specific survey was conducted to examine exercise frequency/restrictions, perceived safety of competitive/recreational exercise, and psychoso…

In the eye and mind of the beholder: The effects of familiarisation on the perception of atypical infant facial configurations.

Perception of infant faces plays a crucial role in adult-infant caretaking behaviour, with adults being found to demonstrate a reliable attraction towards infant faces over other stimuli. When affected by a congenital facial malformation such as cleft lip and/or palate, however, adults' visual scanning patterns and subjective appraisal of these faces have been found to be adversely affected. Little past work has explored how an observer's prior experience with this specific malformation might play a role in the perception of cleft-affected infant faces. To this end, two groups of adult female …

Is there a relationship between somatosensory impairment and the perception of pain in stroke survivors? An exploratory study.

Pain and somatosensory impairments are commonly reported following stroke. This study investigated the relationship between somatosensory impairments (touch detection, touch discrimination and proprioceptive discrimination) and the reported presence and perception of any bodily pain in stroke survivors. Stroke survivors with somatosensory impairment ( N  = 45) completed the Weinstein Enhanced Sensory Test (WEST), Tactile Discrimination Test, and Wrist Position Sense Test for quantification of somatosensation in both hands and the McGill Pain Questionnaire, visual analog scale and the Neuropath…

'Public prostitutes and private prostitutes': A study of women's perceptions of transactional sex in Cameroon.

CONTEXT: Although AIDS-related deaths continue to decline, there are more people living with HIV than ever before. Sub-Saharan Africa remains disproportionately affected by the epidemic, with women aged 15-24 being over three times as likely to acquire HIV than their male counterparts. One reason for this disparity is that those engaging in 'transactional sex' do not benefit from governmental HIV prevention efforts. Transactional sex is both less well understood than sex work and more common, suggesting the need for further research. METHOD: To this end, we interviewed eighteen women engaging

Perceptions of childhood immunization in São Paulo: quantitative-qualitative cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination hesitation spans from historical diseases such as smallpox to the current challenges with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). In Brazil, vaccination faces obstacles related to trust and convenience. Despite the National Immunization Program, fear of adverse effects as well as misinformation challenge confidence in vaccines, and anti-vaccine movements have gained momentum. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated childhood vaccine refusal, including COVID-19 vaccines, by comparing the reasons for and sociodemographic differences between vaccinated individuals and those who h

The influence of the "cancer" label on perceptions and management decisions for low-grade prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: Grade Group 1 (GG1) prostate cancer should be managed with active surveillance (AS). Global uptake of AS remains disappointingly slow and heterogeneous. Removal of cancer labels has been proposed to reduce GG1 overtreatment. We sought to determine the impact of GG1 disease terminology on individual's perceptions and decision making. METHODS: Discrete choice experiments were conducted on 3 cohorts: healthy men, canonical partners (partners), and patients with GG1 (patients). Participants reported preferences in a series of vignettes with 2 scenarios each, permuting key opinion lead…

Parental Perceptions and Concerns Related to the Consequences of Pediatric Obesity: Feeling or Real Problem?

Lifestyle modifications (i.e., nutrition and physical activity) remain the main tools in the context of childhood obesity's treatment and prevention of short and long-term consequences. At the same time, parental perception of child weight represents an even more important tool. It is known that more than half of parents of overweight/obese children underestimate their child's weight status or are not worried about the risks associated with childhood overweight/obesity. Consequently, parental perception of childhood obesity can often be erroneous, and, even when accurate, subsequent parental b…
