The VincerEmo Pilot Study: Prospective Analysis of Controlled Physical Activity in People with severe Hemophilia.

Background/Objectives: The approach to physical activity in people with hemophilia (PwH) is still conditioned by many difficulties. Thus, a prospective observational pilot study has been carried out aiming to evaluate how an adequate and controlled training program can slow down the onset or evolution of arthropathy and improve musculoskeletal health and quality of life. Methods: Performed from April 2022 to April 2023, this study involved nine severe hemophilic A and B patients, aged > 18 years old, on regular prophylaxis with replacement products. Participants, without changing the usual pro

Impact of Heavy Slow Resistance vs. Convectional Exercise in Lateral Epicondylitis-A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: The extensor carpi radial muscle may become imbalanced compared to other muscles in the upper arm and can disrupt the overall muscle balance in the upper limb. This muscular imbalance may then cause inflammation or irritation in the tendon. Regular physical activity is rarely used as the only treatment for lowering limb edema. Heavy slow resistance (HSR) training is effective compared to regular exercises. HSR affects functional abilities and physical refinement differently from conventional workouts. This study evaluated the effects of HSR and conventional exercise (CE) on subject

Immune system expression profiling in patients experiencing low back pain: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Spine pathologies are associated with an inflammatory microenvironment, with previous studies demonstrating systemic inflammation based on analysis of serum from patients with low back pain (LBP). This pilot study used gene expression profiling to identify candidate cellular mechanisms mediating systemic inflammation in patients with LBP, with and without radicular pain, compared to asymptomatic controls. OBJECTIVE: To identify differences in expression of inflammation- and immune-related genes in whole blood from patients with LBP and spine pathology compared to control participa

Improving functional capacity in haemophilia through adapted physical activity: a pilot study protocol.

Haemophilia, a genetic disorder characterised by deficient clotting factors, often leads to musculoskeletal complications such as haemophilic arthropathy. These complications result in reduced functional capacity, muscle weakness and kinesiophobia, which further exacerbate physical inactivity and psychological distress. The World Federation of Haemophilia recommends including regular physical activity in the management plans for individuals with haemophilia, emphasising its benefits for bone and muscle strengthening, improved coordination, maintenance of healthy body weight and enhanced self-e

Ninjin'yoeito for Impaired Oral Function in Older Adults: A Prospective, Open-Label Pilot Study.

Background and Objectives: Japan's aging population faces growing challenges related to oral frailty, a condition characterized by the decline of oral function associated with physical and nutritional deterioration. Impaired oral function contributes to reduced chewing, swallowing, and saliva secretion, leading to poor appetite and frailty progression. Ninjin'yoeito (NYT), a traditional Kampo formula, has been clinically used to improve systemic weakness and oral symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of NYT in improving oral health among elderly individuals with impair

Pilot Exploratory Analysis of Serum Gonadal Hormones, Inflammatory Proteins, and Intracerebral Hemorrhage Outcomes.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) remains the least treatable form of stroke, with inflammation implicated as a major pathophysiological feature. Hence, this study sought to associate serum proteins and hormones associated with inflammation and ICH outcomes. Patients presenting to Duke University Hospital with computed tomography-verified spontaneous, supratentorial, non-traumatic ICH within 24 h of symptom onset were prospectively recruited. In this pilot study, equal numbers of men and women and Black and White individuals were included and matched by a 6-month modified Rankin Score (mRS). The

Profiles of oral microbiota and metabolites in periodontitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia patients: a pilot study.

Emerging evidence suggests a potential link between periodontitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). We have demonstrated that experimental periodontitis and the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis exacerbate the progression of BPH. In this study, we focused on the characteristics and alterations of the oral microbiome and metabolites in patients with BPH and those with both BPH and periodontitis. Forty-eight men aged 40 to 60 years were recruited and divided into four groups: healthy controls, periodontitis, BPH, and periodontitis combined with BPH (P-BPH). Gingival crevicular

Assessment of CoQ10 Dietary Intake in a Mediterranean Cohort of Familial Hypercholesterolemia Patients: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Coenzyme Q 10 is a lipid molecule that works as a mobile electron transporter in the mitochondrial respiratory chain and, in addition, plays the role of an antioxidant. Interestingly, CoQ10 synthesis in human cells derives from the mevalonate pathway, the same metabolic route that delivers endogenous cholesterol. Mutations leading to Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) alter the levels of CoQ10 production and remarkably, statin therapy associated muscular symptoms (SAMSs) might also be modulated by CoQ10 supplementation. CoQ10 is also provided by diet and only a few studi

Mitochondrial dysfunction in methylmalonic acidemia: A pilot study using Seahorse technology in peripheral blood.

INTRODUCTION: Isolated methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) is an inborn error of metabolism due to the deficiency of the methylmalonic mutase enzyme. Many patients develop chronic complications such as basal ganglia lesions or kidney impairment. A growing body of evidence supports secondary mitochondrial dysfunction as the main cause for the development of these long-term complications, even in patients with good metabolic control. Currently, available methods to study mitochondrial function are often invasive, such as muscular or skin biopsy. OBJECTIVES: This pilot study is aimed to develop a safe,

Adjuvant therapy of severe and/or refractory bullous pemphigoid with immunoadsorption - A prospective monocenter pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is the most common autoimmune blistering disease in the Western world. While remission is achieved in the majority of BP patients by long-term use of corticosteroids with or without immunomodulants/immunosuppressants, national and international guidelines recommend adjuvant immunoadsorption (IA) in refractory patients. Here we investigated the safety and efficacy of IA in severe and/or refractory BP patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 10 BP patients (3 women, 7 men; mean age 69.7 years; range 52-81 years) were treated with IA on three consecutive

Nutritional status of patients with nemaline myopathy and related congenital myopathies in Finland: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The muscle weakness in patients with nemaline myopathy (NM) and related disorders (NMR) often affects the muscles used for eating and dining, and some scientific evidence of poorer nutritional status of patients with myopathy exists. However, comprehensive research on the nutritional status of persons with NM or NMR has not been done. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to conduct a comprehensive cross-sectional pilot study among adult Finnish patients with NM or NMR to investigate their food consumption, nutrient intakes, selected nutrient-related laboratory parameters in blood, and self-ass
