Comparison of behavioral outcomes following cranial vault remodeling versus strip craniectomy for non-syndromic sagittal craniosynostosis.

PURPOSE: While previous studies have investigated behavioral development after non-syndromic sagittal craniosynostosis (NSSC) repair, there is limited information available about the influence of surgical technique. This study examined behavioral differences among patients with NSSC following cranial vault remodeling (CVR) versus strip craniectomy (SC). METHODS: Parents of patients ages 6-18 years old with NSSC repaired before 6 months via either CVR or SC completed four behavioral surveys: Conners Short 3rd Edition (ADHD), Social Responsiveness Scale 2nd edition (ASD), Behavior Rating Invent

Assessment of Plantar Flap Coverage at Various Foot Amputation Levels: A Cadaveric Study.

BACKGROUND: From traumatic injury to diabetic foot infections, minor amputations of the foot and ankle rely on viable and adequate soft-tissue coverage. When employing a plantar foot flap, coverage often determines amputation level. This study examined the relative plantar foot flap length needed to cover various levels of minor foot amputations. METHODS: Demographic data and plantar flap length of ten cadaver specimens were recorded. The minimum plantar flap length needed to cover transmetatarsal, Lisfranc, and Chopart amputations was measured following each amputation. Absolute and percenta

Patient-specific lunate prosthesis with perilunate ligament reconstruction: surgical technique.

The lunate bone plays a central role in force transmission, proximal carpal row integrity, and kinematics of the wrist. In cases of irreparable pathologies to the lunate bone, prosthetic replacement is appealing to avoid salvage procedures. Previous attempts at lunate replacement yielded inconsistent results due to non-anatomical implant design and lack of ligament reconstruction, which posed a risk of dislocation and carpal collapse. Nowadays, the CAD design process and 3D printing of bio-compatible materials such as titanium make it possible to manufacture patient-specific lunate implants. W

Reconstruction of nasal tip using auricular cartilage to prevent depression following midline partial maxillectomy: A report of two cases.

Midline partial maxillectomy involving anterior nasal spine and septum in patients with maxillary carcinoma can result in postoperative depression of the nasal column and apex, even when a maxillary prosthesis is used. We encountered patients who developed significant nasal column and tip depression following surgery. To address this issue, we performed nasal septum reconstruction using auricular cartilage. Auricular cartilage was harvested bilaterally, and two grafts were stacked and transplanted into the nasal septal defect. After surgery, the transplanted cartilage became covered with mucos

One-piece bifrontal basal craniotomy with pericranial flap for frontal sinus management: How I Do It.

BACKGROUND: Anterior skull base surgery poses challenges including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage and cosmetic concerns. A novel one-piece bifrontal basal craniotomy using a pericranial flap was developed to improve outcomes. METHOD: The technique included precise burr hole placement, dura-protective craniotomy, and frontal sinus sealing using a pericranial flap. Reconstruction was stabilized using miniplates and screws, leaving the epidural dead space unfilled and lowering infection risks. CONCLUSION: This method reduces CSF leakage, enhances reconstruction durability, and preserves cosm

[Reconstruction of primary malignant bone tumors in children: Do we really need to change our methods?].

Primary bone tumors in children are almost exclusively represented by osteosarcomas and Ewing sarcomas. They mainly affect the limbs, particularly the lower limbs. It is estimated that there are approximately 250 new cases per year. While the initial goal is survival, the question of reconstruction quickly follows. The aim of reconstruction is to avoid amputation, ensure functional outcomes, and, if possible, support ongoing growth in these children. For a long time, free fibula transfer was the first choice, as it allowed for the use of a vascularized bone whose shape was well-suited for limb

Giant Condyloma Acuminatum: A Review of Reconstructive Options.

The management of giant condyloma acuminatum in the male population remains challenging given the anatomic complexity of this region. Preservation of micturition and sexual function are key considerations. After primary resection, reconstructive plastic surgery is often necessary for coverage of soft-tissue defects, necessitating a multidisciplinary approach by urologic, plastic, and colorectal surgery. Because of the rarity of this disease, a defined treatment protocol has not been established. This review aims to outline key considerations and reconstructive options for this challenging dise

Vascularized fascial flap for reconstruction of combined oral mucosa-mandibular defects: The multi-modal biological assessment.

OBJECTIVE: The reconstruction of composite defects in the oral and maxillofacial region using vascularized fascial flaps, such as the fibular, iliac, and temporal fascial flaps, has gained increasing attention among surgeons. However, there remains uncertainty regarding the suitability of fascial flaps as transplants, as well as their healing processes and outcomes, due to their non-mucosal nature. This study aims to comprehensively assess the biological aspects of vascularized fascial flaps at clinical, histological, and genetic levels, with the goal of providing essential biological referenc
