Predictors of patient compliance during Class II division 1 malocclusion functional orthodontic treatment.

OBJECTIVES: To determine factors that could predict Class II/1 malocclusion patient compliance during functional treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 77 subjects (aged 11-13 years; 47% girls) presenting with Class II/1 malocclusion. Inclusion criteria were distal molar relationship, overjet greater than 5 mm, and confirmed pubertal growth spurt. Removable functional appliances (62% Twin Block [TB], 38% Sander Bite Jumping [BJ]) with built-in maxillary expansion screws were used. Follow-up period was 1 year. Patients and parents independently filled out the Child Perceptio

Effect of the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing measures on the sexual functions of women treated for vaginismus (genitopelvic pain/penetration disorder).

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Female sexual function is influenced by the emotional and hormonal state. COVID-19 has been the major global health crisis of our time with high psychosocial impact. Vaginismus is a form of female sexual dysfunction and a subset of genitopelvic pain/penetration disorder in which any form of vaginal penetration is painful or impossible. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on sexual function of women treated for vaginismus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All women treated using dilators between 2018-2019 were included. Data obtained 3 months after co

Valuing the Vulnerable - The Important Role of Transgender Communities in Biomedical Research.

Every cell has a genetic sex that is determined at the time of fertilization. However, the natal sex of cells may not match the hormonal environment in which they reside in transgender individuals. This discordance provides a unique opportunity to study the short- and long-term effects across a range of cellular functions, health conditions, physiologic processes and psychosocial outcomes to the benefit of transgender and cisgender communities. While there is a growing body of knowledge as the literature on sex differences in virtually every organ system accumulates, there remains a paucity of

Associations Between Ultrasound-Detected Synovitis, Pain, and Function in Interphalangeal and Thumb Base Osteoarthritis: Data From the Nor-Hand Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: To explore whether ultrasound-detected gray-scale synovitis and power Doppler activity in the interphalangeal and first carpometacarpal (CMC1) joints are associated with pain and physical function in patients with hand osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS: A total of 290 patients with hand OA underwent an ultrasound examination of the bilateral interphalangeal and CMC1 joints. Using logistic regression analyses with generalized estimating equations, we examined whether grade 0-3 gray-scale synovitis and power Doppler activity were associated with pain in the same joint. Using linear regres

Bouncing back: Brain rehabilitation amid opioid and stimulant epidemics.

Recent methamphetamine and opioid use epidemics are a major public health concern. Chronic stimulant and opioid use are characterized by significant psychosocial, physical and mental health costs, repeated relapse, and heightened risk of early death. Neuroimaging research highlights deficits in brain processes and circuitry that are linked to responsivity to drug cues over natural rewards as well as suboptimal goal-directed decision-making. Despite the need for interventions, little is known about (1) how the brain changes with prolonged abstinence or as a function of various treatments; and (

Frailty and Exercise Training: How to Provide Best Care after Cardiac Surgery or Intervention for Elder Patients with Valvular Heart Disease.

The aim of this literature review was to evaluate existing evidence on exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) as a treatment option for elderly frail patients with valvular heart disease (VHD). Pubmed database was searched for articles between 1980 and January 2018. From 2623 articles screened, 61 on frailty and VHD and 12 on exercise-based training for patients with VHD were included in the analysis. We studied and described frailty assessment in this patient population. Studies reporting results of exercise training in patients after surgical/interventional VHD treatment were analyzed re

Poly-traumatic multi-ligament knee injuries: is the knee the limiting factor?

PURPOSE: Multi-ligament knee injuries (MLKI) from a high-velocity accident are rare but potentially devastating. This matched cohort analysis compares knee functional outcomes after multiple ligament reconstruction in poly-trauma patients to those that occurred in isolation. METHODS: Sixty-two patients with MLKI that occurred either as a component of polytrauma or had occurred in isolation were matched according to age, sex, and knee dislocation grade. Functional outcomes and knee physical examination were assessed at a 2-year follow-up. New Injury Severity Score (NISS) was calculated based o

Prevalence of Psychiatric Comorbidity in Symptomatic Gastroesophageal Reflux Subgroups.

BACKGROUND: Limited data exist regarding the psychosocial aspects of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Some GERD subgroups, such as functional heartburn and hypersensitive esophagus, might show different psychiatric comorbidities than others. AIM: We aimed to evaluate the psychiatric comorbidities of GERD subgroups using a cross-sectional design. METHODS: A group of GERD patients at a tertiary outpatient clinic were evaluated via upper GIS (gastrointestinal system) endoscopy, esophageal manometry, and 24-h impedance-pH monitoring. Thirty-nine patients diagnosed with erosive reflux dise

Enduring deficits in brain reward function after chronic social defeat in rats: susceptibility, resilience, and antidepressant response.

BACKGROUND: Anhedonia, or diminished interest or pleasure in rewarding activities, characterizes depression and reflects deficits in brain reward circuitries. Social stress induces anhedonia and increases risk of depression, although the effect of social stress on brain reward function is incompletely understood. METHODS: This study assessed the following: 1) brain reward function in rats (using the intracranial self-stimulation procedure) and protein levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and related signaling molecules in response to chronic social defeat, 2) brain reward function duri

The impact of knee instability with and without buckling on balance confidence, fear of falling and physical function: the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study.

OBJECTIVE: Knee buckling, in which a knee gives way during weight-bearing, is common in people with knee pain and knee osteoarthritis (OA), but little is known about the prevalence of sensations of knee instability, slipping or shifting in which the knee does not actually buckle, or of the psychosocial and physical consequences of these symptoms. DESIGN: We asked participants in the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study (MOST) separately about episodes of knee buckling and sensations of knee instability without buckling in the past 3 months, and assessed fear of falling, poor balance confidence (A

Barrier repair therapy in atopic dermatitis: an overview.

Atopic eczema or dermatitis (AD) is a chronically relapsing dermatitis associated with pruritus, sleep disturbance, psychosocial symptoms, and impaired quality of life. It affects 10-20 % of school-aged children, and there is evidence to suggest that this prevalence is increasing. Filaggrin (filament-aggregating protein) has an important function in epidermal differentiation and barrier function. Null mutations within the filaggrin gene cause ichthyosis vulgaris and appear to be a major risk factor for developing AD. The affected skin of atopic individuals is deficient in filaggrin degradation

Influence of acute tryptophan depletion on gastric sensorimotor function in humans.

Peripheral serotonin (5-hydrodytryptamine; 5-HT) is involved in the regulation of gastrointestinal motility and sensation, whereas centrally it plays a role in mood regulation. A dysfunctional serotonergic system may provide a plausible link between functional dyspepsia symptoms and its high psychosocial comorbidity such as anxiety and depression. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of decreased 5-HT synthesis by acute tryptophan depletion (ATD) on gastric sensorimotor function and nutrient tolerance, anxiety scores, and gastrointestinal mucosal 5-HT concentrations in healthy volu

Confronting the challenges: epidemiological study of female sexual dysfunction and the menopause.

INTRODUCTION: Despite rapid current and anticipated growth in the number of women who will spend a substantial portion of their life span in the postmenopausal period, the nature, incidence, and prevalence of changes in sexual function during and after the menopausal transition remain poorly characterized. AIM: Challenges inherent in studying the menopausal transition and proposed additions and changes that have emerged from recent consensus conferences on female sexual dysfunction are reviewed. METHODS: Specific topics related to female sexual dysfunction were presented in a Postmenopausal

Effectiveness of dyadic interventions in improving outcomes for adults with multiple long-term conditions or frailty and their informal carers: a systematic review.

Dyadic interventions targeting carer-care recipient pairs are effective in improving psychosocial outcomes in single diseases, but whether similar interventions are beneficial in the context of multiple long-term conditions or frailty remains unclear. In this systematic review, we synthesised evidence on the effectiveness of community dyadic interventions in improving outcomes for adults aged 55 years or older with multiple long-term conditions or frailty, or both, and their informal carers. We searched six databases for experimental and quasi-experimental studies published from Jan 1, 2010 to

What's a "Cognitive" Intervention? The PICC-M Framework to Distinguish Cognitive Remediation, Stimulation, Training, Therapy, and Rehabilitation.

Psychosocial interventions targeting cognition improve objective cognitive test performance, strategy use, emotional well-being, and quality of life in individuals with mild cognitive impairment and early dementia. These interventions have been labeled as cognitive training, cognitive remediation, cognitive rehabilitation, cognitive stimulation, and overlap with cognitive (psycho)therapy. The inconsistent labeling of the interventions has resulted in ambiguity of what a cognitive intervention entails and limits the translation of interventions into clinical practice. To address this, we propos

Managing chemobrain: Translational insights and evidence-based psychological interventions.

With the improving survival rates of malignant tumors, the focus of attention in cancer research is shifting toward a better understanding of long-term treatment-related adverse effects that impact quality of life, with particular focus on cancer-related cognitive impairment. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as "chemobrain" in the literature, manifests as deficits in attention, memory, processing speed, and executive functions. Although the frequency of objectively measured cognitive deficits detected through neuropsychological assessments are moderate, subjective complaints often result

Perceived risk of technological displacement and mental health among young workers: evidence from the CSS2023.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines whether perceived risk of technological displacement is associated with the mental health of young workers aged 18 to 35 and explores the mechanisms underlying this relationship. METHODS: Using data from the 2023 Chinese Social Survey (CSS2023) and a nationally representative sample, the analysis employs regression models, heterogeneity tests, and mediation analyses to assess both the overall association and its potential pathways. RESULTS: The results show that perceived risk of technological displacement is significantly and negatively associated with ment

Trauma and Identity Development in Yashica Dutt's Coming Out as Dalit.

The paper examines Yashica Dutt's Coming Out as Dalit through the framework of Trauma theory, highlighting the emotional and psychological consequences of hiding one's Dalit identity in a rigidly hierarchical society. This study offers a thorough analysis of the psychological pain caused by caste-based discrimination and the lasting impacts of social marginalisation. It underscores how caste discrimination engenders internalised fear, humiliation, and identity disintegration, resulting in persistent psychological distress. This paper examines how Dutt's young teenager experiences of concealing

NuViva: Development of postpartum nutrition and exercise program implementing the FIGO pregnancy passport to reduce cardiometabolic risk.

Pregnancy provides a unique opportunity to identify women at increased risk of future chronic disease, as adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) such as hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes mellitus, preterm birth, placental complications, and fetal growth restriction are associated with later cardiometabolic morbidity. However, postpartum care remains fragmented and limited, representing a missed opportunity for preventive intervention. Currently in pilot phase, NuViva is a novel, multidisciplinary, community-based postpartum program, providing nutrition, physical exercise, an
