We used electrooculography to study the saccadic velocities, smooth pursuit, and vestibular ocular reflex in a patient with an acute thalamic hemorrhage. Our findings confirmed what others have shown in that there were hypometric saccades contralateral to the lesion, impaired smooth pursuit ipsilaterally, and a preserved vestibular ocular reflex. In addition, we demonstrated an asymmetry with the contralateral eye being more affected. Using the variables auditory threshold, speech audiometry, SISI, ABLB, stapedius reflex, Carhart-test, Békésy audiometry and calorization three factors could be extracted: 1. The quality of peripheral speech-coding in combination with central processing; 2. the degree of damage of the inner ear (threshold, distance between hearing-threshold and reflex-threshold, SISI and calorization); 3. a retrocochlear factor. SISI and ABLB are both tests concerning the inner ear, but must be regarded separately as it is to be supposed that these two findings are caused be two different pathologic processes.

Autonomic dysteflexia is a pathologic reflex which occurs in patients with a spinal cord lesion above T7. Airway hyperresponsiveness is among the defining phenomena in asthma. In this article, 3 mechanisms are reviewed to explain how gastroesophageal reflux (GER) may influence airway hyperresponsiveness. Jaw clonus is an uncommon pathological reflex thought to indicate corticospinal tract dysfunction above the Vth cranial nerve. It is useful as a sign of upper motor neuron dysfunction above the spinal cord. One theory of self excitation posits an inverse and linear relationship between clonus frequency and the length of the reflex arc, to explain the higher frequency of clonus in the ankles than the wrist. Only two previous cases of jaw clonus have been published. One of these plus the present case suggest that an inverse and linear relationship is not correct.

In five patients with severe physical and mental disabilities, a feeding pattern with tongue thrust was assessed videofluoroscopically. Forward and backward movements of the tongue associated with movements of the mandible propelled the bolus, and the insufficiently formed bolus spilled out anteriorly and laterally in part. The swallowing reflex was accompanied by tongue thrust. After the reflex, a part of the bolus frequently remained on the vallecula and pyriform sinuses. The suckle pattern shown by infants is suggested to remain and develop into this feeding pattern with tongue thrust.

Four hundred patients with suspected tetanus were studied to determine the value of the spatula test to diagnose tetanus. A positive test result (reflex spasm of the masseters on touching the posterior pharyngeal wall) was seen in 359 (94%) of 380 patients with tetanus and in no patient without tetanus. Thirty-three of 400 patients (13 with tetanus and 20 with other diagnoses) had a negative test result (a gag reflex with attempted expulsion of the spatula). Thus, the test performed on presentation had a high specificity (100%) and sensitivity (94%) for diagnosing tetanus.

We report an electro-oculographic study (EOG) of upbeat nystagmus and neuroradiological correlations in 4 patients and neuropathological findings in 1 patient. A total of 82 patients were assessed by rectal manometry after operation for Hirschsprung's disease according to the Soave-Denda technique. A positive rectoanal reflex was obtained in 32 cases (39%), whereas the remaining 50 cases (61%) did not exhibit a rectoanal reflex. The effects of midazolam-pentobarbital and midazolam-thiopental combinations on the righting reflex were studied in rats. Doses that block the righting reflex for the agents given alone and for their combinations were determined with a probit procedure and compared with an isobolographic analysis. 1. This study attempts to elucidate unique heart and blood pressure responses seen in sloths in response to tilting by blocking autonomics with atropine, propranolol, or a combination of these. 2. Atropine produces less heart rate increase in sloths than in other mammals but blocks reflex bradycardia as expected. 3. Propranolol reduces heart rate to about the same degree as in man and completely blocks all cardiac responses to tilting, both direct and reflex. 4. Atropine slightly diminishes blood pressure responses to tilting whereas propranolol tends to augment the already marked increases.

We describe a 41 years old woman who 17 years ago presented hypotonia and proximal muscular weakness in the upper and lower limbs.
