Role of oncostatin-M in ECM remodeling and plaque vulnerability.

Atherosclerosis is a multifactorial inflammatory disease characterized by the development of plaque formation leading to occlusion of the vessel and hypoxia of the tissue supplied by the vessel. Chronic inflammation and altered collagen expression render stable plaque to unstable and increase plaque vulnerability. Thinned and weakened fibrous cap results in plaque rupture and formation of thrombosis and emboli formation leading to acute ischemic events such as stroke and myocardial infarction. Inflammatory mediators including TREM-1, TLRs, MMPs, and immune cells play a critical role in plaque

Exploring the "shared" in shared decision-making in the care for children with chronic diseases or disabilities: what are the roles of parents and professionals?

There is a growing body of literature that recognizes the importance of shared decision-making (SDM) in the care for children with chronic conditions and/or disabilities. Although participation in SDM can be more or less active, the tuning between parents and professionals about the way they want to participate in SDM is often an implicit process, limiting parents' optimal involvement. Role definitions may support both partners in the process of SDM. We conducted a scoping review to investigate the available knowledge on the interpretation and variability of different roles of parents and prof

HDACs and Their Inhibitors on Post-Translational Modifications: The Regulation of Cardiovascular Disease.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), such as myocardial hypertrophy, heart failure, atherosclerosis, and myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, are among the major threats to human health worldwide. Post-translational modifications alter the function of proteins through dynamic chemical modification after synthesis. This mechanism not only plays an important role in maintaining homeostasis and plays a crucial role in maintaining normal cardiovascular function, but is also closely related to the pathological state of various diseases. Histone deacetylases (HDACs) play an important role in the

The molecular mechanism of neutrophil extracellular traps and its role in bone and joint disease.

As the body's first line of defense, neutrophils play an important role in the early stages of infection. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), a novel way to kill pathogens, are released from activated neutrophils to trap and kill microorganisms and protect the body from invasion. However, studies have shown that NETs not only play a role in self-defense in vivo but also participate in some pathological processes. Current studies have found that excessive or abnormally activated NETs play a pathogenic role in a variety of diseases. NETs, in addition to killing pathogens during the pathology

Mexican immunoparasitology: what is done and has to be done.

In this special issue of Parasite Immunology, the reader will find reviewed some of the hottest topics in immunoparasitology, with emphasis on the most studied parasite species in Mexico. For instance, the immunological conditions that appear favorable for the survival or destruction of the parasite in the intermediate and definitive hosts in cysticercosis, as well as the use of immunodiagnostic tests in epidemiological/intervention studies are discussed in two different articles. The role that alternatively activated macrophages plays in modulating host immunity is also discussed, while in th

[Autoimmune hepatitis].

The morphology of autoimmune hepatitis is characterized by portal-periportal predilection of necroinflammatory lesions. In comparison to the viral type of hepatitis severe piece-meal-necroses, the collapse of periportal parenchyma, and to a higher degree acinar transformation of hepatocytes are more prominent. The autoimmune hepatitis may start with acute disease displaying unusual clinical und histopathologic features. The postinfantile giant cell hepatitis seems to constitute a variant of autoimmune hepatitis. Autoimmune hepatitis has been reproduced in animal models and it could be demonstr

The past, present and future of neutralizing antibodies for hepatitis C virus.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major cause of liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma worldwide. HCV establishes a chronic infection in the majority of cases. However, some individuals clear the virus, demonstrating a protective role for the host immune response. Although new all-oral drug combinations may soon replace traditional ribavirin-interferon therapy, the emerging drug cocktails will be expensive and associated with side-effects and resistance, making a global vaccine an urgent priority. T cells are widely accepted to play an essential role in clearing acute HCV infection, whereas th

Negotiating identity at the intersection of paediatric and genetic medicine: the parent as facilitator, narrator and patient.

This article identifies a significant transformation in the role and identity of parents accompanying their child to clinic. This shift is a product of the intersection between paediatric and genetic medicine, where parents play a critical role in providing information about their child, family and ultimately, about themselves. To provide a context for this matrix, two broad areas of sociological inquiry are highlighted. The first is explanations of the role a parent plays in paediatric medicine and the second is the diagnostic process in paediatric genetics and the implications for parent and

Helicobacter pylori Induce Col1a1 Up-Regulation, DNA Damage, and Fibrosis in Gastric Precancerous Lesions.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) induces gastric precancerous lesions (GPL), but their underlying biomarkers remain poorly characterized. To establish a GPL model, BALB/c mice were inoculated with H. pylori via gavage. Immunofluorescence confirmed successful modeling by detecting H. pylori distribution and aberrant expression of precancerous lesion markers. Serum-based label-free proteomics and bioinformatic analyses were performed to screen key proteins. Data are available via ProteomeXchange (PXD076808). Western blot and immunofluorescence were used to verify key proteins and markers of DNA d

From gloom to bloom: osmanthus black tea essential oil alleviates anxiety in mice via modulation of the nose-brain axis.

Aromatherapy exerts mood-regulating effects primarily through inhalation, with the nasal microbiota playing a critical yet mechanistically undefined role in the nose-brain axis, especially in anxiety-related neurological disorders. In this study, osmanthus black tea essential oil (OBT) was examined for anxiolytic effects and potential mechanisms linked to the nose-brain axis. Volatile compounds with known anxiolytic properties, such as linalool, limonene, and α-terpineol, were identified in OBT. In a chronic restraint stress-induced anxiety mouse model, OBT inhalation significantly improved an

Pre-Intercalated Cation Optimizing Proton Topochemistry for High-Performance Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries.

Cation pre-intercalated oxides have been widely explored as cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Although the influence of intercalants on the material structure and Zn2+ storage capacity has been adequately studied, an in-depth understanding of the influence of intercalants on proton storage is still lacking. Especially, proton transport exhibits ultrafast kinetics as an ideal charge carrier, playing a crucial role in the performance of AZIBs. We show that pre-intercalated K+ in K0.5V6O13 (KVO) not only reinforces the [VO] framework but also optimizes the hydrogen-bonded

Respiratory viruses and pulmonary diseases: Mechanisms, therapies, and metabolic reprogramming.

Respiratory viral infections constitute a substantial global health challenge, extending their impact beyond acute inflammation to encompass long-term pulmonary sequelae. Recent evidence highlights that respiratory viruses such as influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2 reprogram host metabolism to facilitate their replication, with significant alterations in glucose metabolism playing a critical role. This metabolic reprogramming augments glucose metabolism via activation of core signaling pathways including PI3K/Akt/mTOR, HIF-1α, and c-Myc. Beyond facilitating viral prol

A receptor-like kinase pair integrates extracellular ATP and salicylic acid signaling to activate plant immunity.

Extracellular Adenosine 5'-triphosphate (eATP) is a damage-associated molecular pattern in both plants and animals, playing an important role as a danger signal in response to various environmental stresses. eATP works both independently and in coordination with other signaling pathways. Here, we identify a previously uncharacterized proline-rich extensin-like receptor kinase 15 (PERK15), which interacts with the plant eATP receptor P2K1 and integrates eATP and salicylic acid (SA)-mediated pathogen defense responses. perk15 mutant plants display reduced eATP responses and compromised pathogen

Epigenetic reprogramming of hepatic antigen presenting cells in chronic liver disease.

Chronic liver disease (CLD) is a high morbidity and mortality condition with a high incidence/prevalence worldwide. Despite the diverse etiological factors involved, common pathogenic hallmarks in CLD progression are the accumulation of scarring hepatic tissue and a sustained local and systemic inflammatory response. Considering the constant exposure of the liver to antigens and the delicate homeostatic immune surveillance that takes place in the organ, hepatic antigen presenting cells (hAPCs; i.e. Kupffer Cells, Liver Sinusoidal Endothelial Cells and Dendritic Cells) and their activity regula

Single-nucleus sequencing dissects the malignant change of early lung adenocarcinoma: SMAD3 suppresses antitumor T cell immunity via ICAM1.

The cellular mechanisms governing the change from pulmonary nodules to early-stage lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) at single-cell resolution are not yet fully elucidated. In the present study, we employed single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) on 44 pulmonary nodule and paired normal specimens to investigate this process. Within the epithelial compartment, alveolar type 2 (AT2) cells were categorized into high- and low-malignancy subclusters. Our differential expression analysis identified a significant upregulation of the transcription factor SMAD family member 3 (SMAD3) in the high-malignancy

Development and evaluation of a gelatin-integrated wool hydrogel dressing for enhanced wound healing using in vitro and in vivo models.

Hydrogel-based advanced wound dressings promote rapid healing by creating a moist environment and protecting against contamination. However, pure hydrogel often lacks strength, flexibility, and wearer comfort for practical clinical use. To address these limitations, this study developed a gelatin hydrogel reinforced with wool fibrous nonwoven. The addition of wool fibers improved thermal comfort, structural integrity, and overall performance of the hydrogel system. Using a sol-gel technique, wool nonwovens with different areal densities (100-300 g/m2) were incorporated into gelatin matrices at

The functional role of ferroptosis in the development and progression of common cancers.

Ferroptosis is a recently characterised, iron-dependent form of regulated cell death governed by the interplay between iron homeostasis, antioxidant defence systems, the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and lipid peroxidation. It has been hypothesised that impaired induction of ferroptosis may play a role in the initiation and progression of multiple malignancies, including, but not limited to, lung, gastric, breast, and colorectal cancers, as well as leukemia, ovarian, liver, pancreatic, and prostate cancers. Emerging evidence highlights the pivotal roles of lipid metabolism, ir

The Role of microRNAs as Potential Biomarkers in Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common and clinically aggressive subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). While novel therapies such as rituximab and polatuzumab vedotin have led to improved outcomes, approximately 35% of patients eventually develop relapsed or refractory disease. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a class of endogenous single-stranded RNAs approximately 22 nucleotides in length, play a pivotal role in the regulation of gene expression at the post-transcriptional level through interactions with complementary target RNAs and contribute significantly to the development, progres

GLP-1 and the brain's powerhouse: a new perspective on the role of mitochondria in neuroprotection.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are emerging as potential neuroprotective drugs in neurodegenerative diseases. These drugs were initially developed to manage type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity. In addition to GLP-1RAs having an impact on metabolic pathways, growing evidences suggests that GLP-1RAs also positively regulate mitochondrial homeostasis in several neuronal cell types such as hippocampal, cortical, dopaminergic and hypothalamic. These modulatory effect of activated GLP-1R in the brain might be playing a crucial role which ultimately leads to neuronal cell survival
