Anthropometric indices with high sensitivity for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep Apnea: A sex-stratified diagnostic accuracy study based on the ESADA cohort.

PURPOSE: Obesity is a major risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but body mass index (BMI) may not adequately capture the regional adiposity most relevant to upper-airway collapse. Novel anthropometric indices may identify moderate-to-severe OSA (ms-OSA) more accurately and improve selection of uncomplicated patients for home sleep apnea testing (HSAT). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective diagnostic accuracy study using baseline anthropometric and polysomnographic data from the European Sleep Apnea Database. Patients with major comorbidities or other conditions precluding HSAT wer

Exploring shared hypoxic pathways in cancer and obstructive sleep apnea: A critical review of extracellular vesicles-non-coding RNA signaling and biological plausibility.

Hypoxia plays a central role in the pathophysiology of both cancer and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), while through biologically distinct mechanisms. Chronic hypoxia (CH), typical of the tumor microenvironment (TME), drives angiogenesis, metabolic rewiring, and malignant progression, whereas intermittent hypoxia (IH), a hallmark of OSA, triggers fluctuating oxidative stress, sympathetic activation, and inflammatory signaling. In recent years, extracellular vesicles (EVs) and their non-coding RNA (ncRNA) cargo, particularly microRNAs (miRNAs) and circular RNAs (circRNAs), have emerged as critic

Association between the C-reactive protein-triglyceride-glucose index and obstructive sleep apnea risk: Mediating role of body mass index in U.S. adults.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by intermittent hypoxia, fragmented sleep, and heightened sympathetic activity, drivers of oxidative stress, systemic inflammation, and metabolic dysregulation. The C-reactive protein-triglyceride-glucose index (CTI) has recently emerged as a composite marker of inflammatory and metabolic states. This study aimed to investigate the association between the CTI index and OSA risk in a nationally representative United States adult population. We analyzed data from 4564 participants in the 2015 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Obstructive sleep apnea in a mouse model is associated with tissue-specific transcriptomic changes in circadian rhythmicity and mean 24-hour gene expression.

Intermittent hypoxia (IH) is a major clinical feature of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The mechanisms that become dysregulated after periods of exposure to IH are unclear, particularly in the early stages of disease. The circadian clock governs a wide array of biological functions and is intimately associated with stabilization of hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) under hypoxic conditions. In patients, IH occurs during the sleep phase of the 24-hour sleep-wake cycle, potentially affecting their circadian rhythms. Alterations in the circadian clock have the potential to accelerate pathological
