Maternal Allergic Asthma Induces Prenatal Neuroinflammation.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a class of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by impaired social interactions and communication skills and repetitive or stereotyped behaviors. Rates of ASD diagnosis continue to rise, with current estimates at 1 in 44 children in the US (Maenner 2021). Epidemiological studies have suggested a link between maternal allergic asthma and an increased likelihood of having a child diagnosed with ASD. However, a lack of robust laboratory models prevents mechanistic research from being carried out. We developed a novel mouse model of maternal asthma-allergy (

The characteristics of androgen receptor splice variant 7 in the treatment of hormonal sensitive prostate cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Dear Editor, The Covid-19 pandemic affected human life globally, inducing much stress on daily living (Çakıroğlu et al. 2020). Although assessments of general mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic have been widely reported, there is not adequate research on how schizophrenia patients have been affected. According to the World Health Organization (2020), individuals with chronic diseases who do not pay attention to their personal hygiene and the rules of protection from COVID-19 have a higher risk of getting infected than the healthy individuals who observe these measures. It is well known

Real-time peer-navigation support during community re-entry for adults with opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: For individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) re-entering the community after incarceration, peer navigator (PN) support is increasingly implemented to support treatment initiation and continuity. However, little is known about the specific services PNs deliver in real-time encounters, contexts in which these services occur, and how they address barriers that affect access to medications for OUD (MOUD). This study presents the first empirically derived typology of PN support for criminal legal-involved (CLI) adults with OUD. METHODS: We applied qualitative content analysis (QCA)

Assault-on-Law-Enforcement: The Complications of Charges for Individuals on Mental Health Court Dockets.

BACKGROUND: Mental health courts divert individuals with serious mental illness away from imprisonment into community-based treatment and supervision. Early research indicates that such treatment contracts can reduce recidivism and provide various other benefits. Aspects of eligibility for this diversion option are still under-researched. AIMS: To explore the nature of alleged offences against people accepted into mental health courts (on mental health court dockets), and their demographic and mental health context and their perceived relevance to eligibility for such diversion. METHODS: We

Eating disorder, dietary pattern, and nutritional behavior among patients with acne vulgaris: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris is a common inflammatory skin condition in adolescence and early adulthood. Although multiple factors contribute to acne, the role of diet remains debated. This study examined associations between acne and nutrition-related variables in young adults. METHODS: We conducted an unmatched case-control study among adults aged 18-25 years in Hebron. Cases were recruited by convenience sampling from dermatology clinics, and controls were recruited voluntarily from the community (universities/social media). Data included sociodemographics, medical history, self-reported BMI,

Perceptions of extended-release naltrexone, methadone, and buprenorphine treatments following release from jail.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have documented patient attitudes and experiences with extended-release naltrexone (XR-NTX) opioid relapse prevention in criminal justice settings. This study assessed barriers and facilitators of jail-to-community reentry among adults with opioid use disorder (OUD) treated with XR-NTX, buprenorphine, methadone, and no medications. METHODS: This qualitative study conducted individual interviews with a purposeful and convenience sample of adults with OUD who were recently released from NYC jails. "The Cango Lyec Project - Healing the Elephant": HIV related vulnerabilities of post-conflict affected populations aged 13-49 years living in three Mid-Northern Uganda districts.

BACKGROUND: The protracted war between the Government of Uganda and the Lord's Resistance Army in Northern Uganda (1996-2006) resulted in widespread atrocities, destruction of health infrastructure and services, weakening the social and economic fabric of the affected populations, internal displacement and death. Despite grave concerns that increased spread of HIV/AIDS may be devastating to post conflict Northern Uganda, empirical epidemiological data describing the legacy of the war on HIV infection are scarce. METHODS: The 'Cango Lyec' Project is an open cohort study involving conflict-affe

Family intervention for schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: People with schizophrenia from families that express high levels of criticism, hostility, or over involvement, have more frequent relapses than people with similar problems from families that tend to be less expressive of emotions. Forms of psychosocial intervention, designed to reduce these levels of expressed emotions within families are now widely used. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the effects of family psychosocial interventions in community settings for people with schizophrenia or schizophrenia-like conditions compared to standard care. [Minimally invasive methods of surgical reconstruction of vesicouterine fistulas].

INTRODUCTION: Vesicouterine fistula (VVF) is a rare disease. In 83-93% of cases it develops due to caesarean section. VVF is characterized by non-physiological communication between the bladder and the uterus. This disorder has a significant social impact, causing incontinence, persistent medical and psychological maladaptation. The gold standard for treating VVF is surgical reconstruction. Early and late results of minimally invasive approaches do not differ from open procedure, but only if the surgical team has sufficient experience. AIM: To evaluate the efficiency of surgical treatment of

Perspectives on Spinraza (Nusinersen) Treatment Study: Views of Individuals and Parents of Children Diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disorder characterized by muscle loss. In December 2016 the FDA approved the first and only treatment drug for SMA: Spinraza (nusinersen). Despite excitement and optimism, there are no published data on the perceptions of individuals with SMA and their families about the benefits, risks, and challenges associated with treatment. OBJECTIVE: This qualitative interview study sought to characterize the perspectives of patients/families with SMA who did not want, or were unsure about, receiving this new innovative treatment for a previously un

Self-Directed Telehealth Parent-Mediated Intervention for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Examination of the Potential Reach and Utilization in Community Settings.

BACKGROUND: There is a significant need for strategies to increase access to evidence-based interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). One novel approach is to train parents to use evidence-based interventions for their child with ASD via telehealth. Pilot work examining the efficacy of one such program, ImPACT Online, demonstrated a high rate of parent program engagement, low attrition, and associated gains in parent learning and child social communication. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to conduct an open trial of ImPACT Online to better understand its disse

Carbamazepine for cocaine dependence.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine dependence has become a substantial public health problem, developing a significant number of medical, psychological and social problems, including the spread of infectious diseases (e.g. AIDS, hepatitis and tuberculosis), crime, violence and neonatal drug exposure. Although there is no consensus regarding how to treat cocaine dependence, effective pharmacotherapy has a potentially major role to play as part of a broader treatment milieu. The anti-convulsant carbamazepine, a tricyclic medication that is widely used to treat a variety of neurological and psychiatric disorder

The orofacial cancer patient's support from the general practitioner, hospital teams, family, and friends.

BACKGROUND: After the diagnosis of cancer, about a third of patients have adjustment disorders. Of recently diagnosed patients, 5 to 15% experience serious psychological disturbances, but their distress is often undetected and untreated. Little attention has been directed to the patients' sources of support and their adequacy. METHODS: This study assessed a defined group (n = 49) of cancer patients' ratings of the support they received from general practitioners, hospital teams, family, and friends. Additional information was collected on the patients' interest in receiving further hospital s

Outcomes of specialist physiotherapy for functional motor disorder: the Physio4FMD RCT.

BACKGROUND: Functional motor disorder often causes persistent disabling symptoms that are associated with high healthcare costs. In recent years, specialist physiotherapy, informed by an understanding of functional motor disorder, has emerged as a promising treatment, but there is an absence of evidence of its effectiveness from large randomised controlled trials. METHODS: We conducted a pragmatic, multicentre, randomised controlled trial, comparing specialist physiotherapy for functional motor disorder to treatment as usual, which was defined as community neurological physiotherapy.
