Persistence in high school: experiences of adolescents and young adults with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study examined persistence in high school among students with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) from the perspective of the adolescents themselves. Tinto's (1975, 1997) Student Integration Model (SIM) provided the theoretical framework for the research. This model consists of three factors: background characteristics, academic integration, and social integration. METHOD: A collective case study method involving 8 adolescents with FASD from Canada and the United States was used. RESULTS: Although the students did not meet the usual academic standards and had acquaintance

Self-esteem and supportiveness as predictors of emotional distress in gay male and lesbian youth.

Many gay male and lesbian youth experience isolation, self-hatred, and other emotional stressors related to harassment and abuse from peers and adults, leading to risk factors associated with alcohol and substance abuse, suicide, prostitution, running away, and school problems. Research findings have indicated that high levels of self-esteem and social supports may moderate gay-identified stressors. The current study examined self-esteem and satisfaction with supportiveness as predictors of emotional distress in a sample of 90 self-identified urban gay male and lesbian youth.

Predicting the health-related values and preferences of geriatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Those who must make health care decisions on behalf of persons who lack decision-making capacity often have too little information. The purpose of this study was to determine whether and to what degree sociodemographic factors, social support, religious involvement, and functional status served as predictors of the health-related values and preferences of geriatric patients. METHODS: A retrospective chart review involving 178 cognitively intact patients enrolled at a geriatric clinic at a university medical center was conducted. Patient variables included age, race, sex, marital s…

Racial congruity as a contextual correlate of mental disorder.

The effects of exposure to racially dissonant residential environments on depressive psychopathology are explored. Epidemiological survey data are shown to support the hypothesis that an inverse relationship exists between racial congruity and depression. Limitations of the analysis are discussed, as are the social implications of the findings.

Social ties and survival among the elderly in Tampere, Finland.

The association between social ties and survival was assessed using a stratified sample of 1060 elderly aged 60-89 years in the city of Tampere, Finland. During the 6.5-year follow-up, 240 men and 153 women died. Compared with married men, the death rate ratio among unmarried men was 1.7 and among widowers 1.2. The respective ratios for women were 1.2 and 1.2. Vicinity of children, living alone, loneliness, social contacts, and social participation were used as indicators of social ties. Men and women were analysed separately. None of the indicators were significant predictors of survival in p

Pushed to the margins and pushing back: a case study of one adult's reflections on social interactions after a traumatic brain injury sustained as an adolescent.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a worldwide chronic health problem. Current empirical approaches to defining factors that contribute to a meaningful life after TBI have been limited to the biomedical perspective. Such a limited paradigm fails to address how people with TBI find meaning and act on and are acted on by the world in which they live. Between 2005 and 2007 an in-depth qualitative case study was conducted. The primary data source was a man's retrospective journal writings about his life after sustaining a severe TBI. The qualitative perspective of symbolic interactionism framed this

A neuroscience perspective on the plasticity of the social and relational brain.

Over the past two decades, the fields of social and contemplative neurosciences have made significant strides. Initial research utilizing fMRI identified neuronal networks involved in empathy, mentalizing, and compassion, as well as complex interactions among these networks. Subsequent studies shifted to testing the plasticity of these social skills via different types of mindfulness- or compassion-based mental training programs, demonstrating brain plasticity, enhanced social capacities and motivation, as well as improved mental health and overall well-being. Next, researchers developed scala

The lived experiences of women in recovery from substance use disorders: a qualitative study on social and recovery capital.

Recovery from substance use disorders entails an array of internal and external capacities that enable individuals to initiate and sustain the journey toward wellness. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of women who have recovered from drug use, focusing specifically on the role of social capital and recovery capital. Employing Corbin and Strauss's grounded theory (2015), the study involved in-depth interviews with a purposively sampled group of 15 female participants in Tehran who had maintained sobriety for approximately five years and were actively leading stable lives. Data

Increases in loneliness among Older Americans Act participants during COVID-19.

Loneliness is increasingly understood as a public health crisis, and older adults are experiencing particularly severe impacts. Social distancing efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic may have increased loneliness among older adults. Guided by the Social Ecological Model, this study uses two cross-sectional waves of the National Survey of Older Americans Act Participants (NSOAAP) from 2019 and 2021 to expand understanding and identify possible points of intervention to increase social support for vulnerable older adults. Results reveal that while home-delivered meal participants have higher lev…

Satisfaction with social connectedness is associated with depression and anxiety symptoms in neurodiverse first-semester college students.

How satisfied people feel with their social connections and support is related to mental health outcomes for many different types of people. People may feel less socially connected at some times in their life-like when they start college. Feeling disconnected from others could lead to depression or anxiety. The transition to college may be especially difficult for autistic students as they are more likely to have difficulties adjusting socially. In our study, we asked 263 college students to answer questions about their emotions and social satisfaction twice per week during their first semeste
