Effectiveness of Spanish intervention for first-grade English language learners at risk for reading difficulties.

The effectiveness of an explicit, systematic reading intervention for first-grade students whose home language was Spanish and who were at risk for reading difficulties was examined. Participants were 69 students in 20 classrooms in 7 schools from 3 districts who initially did not pass the screening in Spanish and were randomly assigned within schools to a treatment or comparison group; after 7 months, 64 students remained in the study. The intervention matched the language of instruction of their core reading program (Spanish). Treatment groups of 3 to 5 students met daily for 50 min and were

Participation of children with dyslexia in compulsory education: current public policy issues.

The assessment and placement of children with dyslexia at appropriate schools has been regulated in the UK by a series of laws since 1944. Recent public policy developments such as the introduction of new duties and rights, and the development of law regarding educational negligence have sharpened the public policy debate on the effectiveness of these policies. This paper explores policy-related issues from an interdisciplinary perspective by outlining and discussing a sample of appellate legal cases regarding children with dyslexia. The provisions of these laws have shaped the actions of key

Habit reversal training for tic disorders in children and adolescents.

Chronic tic disorders, including Tourette's syndrome (TS), affect approximately .5% of children and adolescents. Although strong evidence exists supporting a neurobiological etiology, operant factors may play a role in the maintenance of tic behaviors. Pharmacological approaches remain the most commonly used intervention for chronic tic disorder in children and adults. Nevertheless, the unpredictable efficacy and serious side effects associated with medication along with parental concerns about long-term medication use in children underlie the need for nonpharmacological interventions for tics

Subspecialty training and certification for radiation oncology.

To address the recurring issues regarding subspecialty training and certification in radiation oncology, and using pediatric radiation oncology as an example, the authors considered the problem of inadequate case material for resident teaching. Potential solutions to the identified problems are addressed, and the roles of oversight committees and regulatory bodies are clarified. The problem of the nonuniform distribution of pediatric case material across residency programs cannot be solved by removing pediatric radiation oncology from the core radiation oncology educational curriculum or by of…

[A new medical education using a lung sound auscultation simulator called "Mr. Lung"].

We developed a lung sound auscultation simulator "Mr. Lung" in 2001. To improve the auscultation skills of lung sounds, we utilized this new device in our educational training facility. From June 2001 to March 2002, we used "Mr. Lung" for our small group training in which one hundred of the fifth year medical students were divided into small groups from which one group was taught every other week. The class consisted of ninety-minute training periods for auscultation of lung sounds. At first, we explained the classification of lung sounds, and then auscultation tests were performed. Namely, st

Multilingualism and dyslexia: challenges for research and practice.

Over the last two decades there has been an expansion of activity and substantial progress in research on dyslexia and research on bilingualism and multilingualism. But the study of dyslexia has generally focused on monolingual learners and the study of bilingualism has tended to focus on speakers who do not have special educational needs. This paper will review the strands of research to date that have a bearing on multilingualism and dyslexia and attempt to identify the major challenges that face researchers and teachers. A satisfactory response cannot be developed without a full understandi

Barriers to collaboration: an analysis of systemic barriers to collaboration between teachers and speech and language therapists.

A systems approach is used to examine the barriers to collaboration found in the working practices of speech and language therapists and teachers. Functional, structural and systems-environment barriers are found, but few process barriers, which may explain why good collaborative practice can be found in the field. The differences that serve as barriers are listed and discussed, with a view to fostering mutual understanding between teachers and speech and language therapists.

Who benefits from training in linguistic awareness in the first grade, and what components show training effects?

Who among first graders benefit from training in linguistic awareness, and what components of the linguistic awareness are most amenable to training effects? At the beginning of Grade 1 prospective at-risk readers (26 out of 117) were identified on the basis of very low phonological awareness. In the autumn term, they received practice in linguistic awareness. When compared to controls individually matched controls on phonological awareness, listening comprehension, and WISC-R scores, the intervention group showed a more rapid building-up of phonological awareness, especially phoneme-blending

Evaluating proteinuria in children.

Proteinuria is a common laboratory finding in children. It can be identified as either a transient or a persistent finding and can represent a benign condition or a serious disease. A rapid but qualitative assessment of proteinuria can be made using dipstick or sulfosalicylic acid methods. More precise quantitation is obtained by measuring protein excretion in 24-hour urine samples or by calculating the protein/creatinine ratio in random urine samples. Orthostatic proteinuria is a benign condition characterized by the presence of protein in urine samples collected in the upright position durin

Evaluation of a breast complaint: is it cancer?

The most common breast complaints are nipple discharge, breast pain and a breast mass. These problems can be evaluated in a step-wise manner to determine whether the etiology is cancer. A breast mass is the most common symptom of cancer, but breast pain and nipple discharge also must be evaluated carefully. The history and physical examination, needle aspiration, mammography, ultrasound examination and biopsy are useful in determining the underlying cause of the problem.

Flexible fiberoptic endoscopy in difficult intubations.

Intubation problems sometimes occur very suddenly and can be divided into two groups. The expected ones include the patients with a short neck and long teeth, cellulitis of the tongue, large oropharyngeal tumors, obstructing laryngeal tumors, congenital and acquired maxillofacial deformities, ankylosis of the temporomandibular joints, fractures or ankylosing spondylitis of the cervical spine, and all patients with a history of previous intubation problems. Unexpected problems can arise in patients who combine large incisors and canines with an inability to open the mouth wide, or when the glot

Musculoskeletal anatomy core syllabus for Australian chiropractic programs: A pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to conduct a pilot survey to determine core anatomy content for chiropractic curriculum based on the perception of chiropractors and anatomy educators involved in teaching in an Australian chiropractic program. METHODS: A survey of anatomical structures previously used in a medical survey, with similar criteria for synthesizing responses, was used and classified according to whether the respondents rated an item as essential, important, acceptable, or not required in a chiropractic program. The item was scored as core if ≥60% of respondents rated it essenti…

Adult tetanus in Accra, why the high mortality? An audit of clinical management of tetanus.

BACKGROUND: Tetanus is a life threatening infection relatively uncommon in the developed countries but occurs frequently in developing countries with case fatality rates of 40-60 %. Recent review of adult tetanus at the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital showed a high case fatality of 50%. In order to determine the factors underlying this high case fatality we conducted a retrospective clinical audit of the clinical management of adult tetanus admitted in 1994 to 2001 to the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital. METHODS: Data extracted from the admission and discharge books of the Fevers' Unit of Korle-bu Teac…
