Comatose Patients After Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: An Analysis Based on Quantitative Methods of EEG Reactivity.

OBJECTIVE: Every year, approximately 50-110/1,00,000 people worldwide suffer from cardiac arrest, followed by hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and approximately 40-66% of patients do not recover. The purpose of this study was to identify the brain network parameters and key brain regions associated with awakening by comparing the reactivity characteristics of the brain networks between the awakening and unawakening groups of CPR patients after coma, thereby providing a basis for further awakening interventions. METHOD: This study involved a prospectiv

The Neurobiology of Agrammatic Sentence Comprehension: A Lesion Study.

Broca's area has long been implicated in sentence comprehension. Damage to this region is thought to be the central source of "agrammatic comprehension" in which performance is substantially worse (and near chance) on sentences with noncanonical word orders compared with canonical word order sentences (in English). This claim is supported by functional neuroimaging studies demonstrating greater activation in Broca's area for noncanonical versus canonical sentences. However, functional neuroimaging studies also have frequently implicated the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) in sentence processing m…

TDP-43-associated atrophy in brains with and without frontotemporal lobar degeneration.

Transactive response DNA-binding protein of ∼43 kDa (TDP-43), a primary pathologic substrate in tau-negative frontotemporal lobar degenerati … nd Pure-TDP (n = 31, all type-α). FTLD-TDP was associated with faster atrophy rates in the inferior temporal lobe and temporal pole compared to all non-FTLD TDP-43 groups. The atrophy rate in the frontal lobe was modulated by age with younger FTLD-TDP having the fastest rates. Older FTLD-TDP showed a limbic predominant pattern of neurodegeneration. AD-TDP type- …

Long-term results of functional hemispherectomy for intractable seizures.

OBJECTIVE: From May 1989 to April 1997, functional hemispherectomy was performed in 8 cases of intractable seizures. We retrospectively analyzed our experience to evaluate the seizure control and complications of this surgical technique. METHODS: Following Dr. Rasmussen's model of functional hemispherectomy or performing a modification of this operation, we removed the sensorimotor cortex and temporal lobe associated with disconnection of the remaining portions of the frontal lobe and parieto-occipital lobe. RESULTS: All the patients were followed up for 3-11 years (mean 6.7 years). Satisfac…

Multiple cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) associated with spinal AVM.

The co-existence of multiple cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and a spinal AVM is extremely rare. A 22-year-old man suddenly developed severe headache. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed intracerebral haemorrhage in the left occipital lobe. Cerebral angiography revealed eight AVMs; four were in the right frontal lobe and two each were in the right temporal and left occipital lobe, respectively. A huge high-flow spinal AVM was found incidentally. He had no other vascular lesions such as hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia. A left occipital craniotomy was performed and the ruptur

Dementia of frontal lobe type and amyotrophy.

Dementia of frontal lobe type may precede motor signs in a number of adult patients with amyotrophy. Neuropathological studies have shown neuron loss, spongiosis and gliosis mainly in layers II and III of the frontal and temporal lobes, together with myelin pallor of the subcortical white matter. Golgi studies revealed loss of dendritic spines on the apical dendrite of layer III pyramidal neurons, decreased numbers of dendrites, amputation and tortuosities of dendrites, and distal and proximal dendritic swellings and enlargements. Calbindin D-28K immunocytochemistry revealed a marked decrease …

Computational mechanisms transforming visual codes into sparse representations.

The human medial temporal lobe (MTL) is critical for declarative memory by forming sparse, concept-based neural codes. While sparse coding has long been considered the dominant representational scheme in the MTL, the mechanisms by which it emerges from preceding feature-based visual representations remain poorly understood. Here, we review recent evidence for a novel region-based feature code in the human MTL, in which neurons encode receptive fields within a continuous visual feature space-analogous to place cells in the hippocampus. This intermediate representational scheme suggests that tra…

The Emergence of Topography and Hemispheric Lateralization in High-Level Vision.

This article reviews research that examines the topographic organization of the human brain, the role of development, breakdown and plasticity, and the constraints that give rise to the replicable organization across individuals and cultures. To address these questions, we evaluate the topographic arrangement of regions in ventral temporal cortex (VTC) that respond strongly to the viewing of faces and words, and demonstrate that both categories drive responses in both hemispheres albeit to a greater degree in the right hemisphere for faces and left hemisphere for words. We hypothesize that thi

Neuronal normalization in monkey MT is an intensity-weighted average.

Normalization is a fundamental and ubiquitous neuronal computation that stabilizes activity across populations of neurons and preserves stimulus selectivity. While it is observed throughout the visual system, normalization may be particularly important in higher visual areas, where neurons have large receptive fields (RFs) that are frequently presented with multiple stimuli under natural viewing conditions. Yet it remains unclear how a population of neurons, with diverse selectivities and offset RFs, responds to complex scenes in which given stimuli engage different RFs more effectively than o

Striatal stimulation causing movements mimicking faciobrachial dystonic seizures.

Faciobrachial dystonic seizures (FBDS) are characteristic of anti-LGI1 encephalitis. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying FBDS are unknown, with scalp EEG correlates consistent with cortical initiation and basal ganglia hypermetabolism implicating the involvement of subcortical structures. In a patient with non-encephalitic drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy undergoing brain mapping during a stereotactic-EEG investigation, we identified neurophysiologic evidence that lateralized movements similar to FBDS can result from direct striatal activation. Stimulation of putaminal depth elec…

Tomatoes Are Red: The Perception of Achromatic Objects Elicits Retrieval of Associated Color Knowledge.

When preparing to name an object, semantic knowledge about the object and its attributes is activated, including perceptual properties. It is unclear, however, whether semantic attribute activation contributes to lexical access or is a consequence of activating a concept irrespective of whether that concept is to be named or not. In this study, we measured neural responses using fMRI while participants named objects that are typically green or red, presented in black line drawings. Furthermore, participants underwent two other tasks with the same objects, color naming and semantic judgment, to

Brain Source Localization and Functional Connectivity in Group Identity Regulation of Overbidding in Contest.

Contests may be highly effective in eliciting high levels of effort, but they also carry the risk of inefficient resource allocation due to … group identity task. Subsequently, after the task, additional activation was observed in the right temporal lobe. Results from functional connectivity studies indicated that group identity tasks modify decision-making processes by promoting group norms, empathy, and blurred self-other boundaries for in-group decisions, while out-group decisions after the group …

A shared neural code for perceiving and remembering social interactions in the human superior temporal sulcus.

Recognizing and remembering social information is a crucial cognitive skill. Neural patterns in the superior temporal sulcus (STS) support our ability to perceive others' social interactions. However, despite the prominence of social interactions in memory, the neural basis of remembering social interactions is still unknown. To fill this gap, we investigated the brain mechanisms underlying memory of others' social interactions during free spoken recall of a naturalistic movie. By applying machine learning-based fMRI encoding analyses to densely labeled movie and recall data we found that a su

The neural substrates responsible for punishment sensitivity association with procrastination: Left putamen connectivity with left middle temporal gyrus.

Procrastination has adverse consequences across cultural contexts. Behavioral research found a positive correlation between punishment sensitivity and procrastination. However, little is known about the neural substrates underlying the association between them. We employed voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) methods to address this issue with two independent samples. In Sample 1, behavioral results found that punishment sensitivity was positively related to procrastination. The VBM analysis showed that punishment sensitivity was negatively correlated

Decoding the dynamic perception of risk and speed using naturalistic stimuli: A multivariate, whole-brain analysis.

Time-resolved decoding of speed and risk perception in car driving is important for understanding the perceptual processes related to driving safety. In this study, we used an fMRI-compatible trackball with naturalistic stimuli to record dynamic ratings of perceived risk and speed and investigated the degree to which different brain regions were able to decode these. We presented participants with first-person perspective videos of cars racing on the same course. These videos varied in terms of subjectively perceived speed and risk profiles, as determined during a behavioral pilot. During the

Morphometric similarity differences in drug-naive Parkinson's disease correlate with transcriptomic signatures.

BACKGROUND: Differences in cortical morphology have been reported in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the pathophysiological mechanism of transcriptomic vulnerability in local brain regions remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize the morphometric changes of brain regions in early drug-naive PD patients and uncover the brain-wide gene expression correlates. METHODS: The morphometric similarity (MS) network analysis was used to quantify the interregional structural similarity from multiple magnetic resonance imaging anatomical indices measured in each br
