The article presents the results of the dental examination of 75 patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease with mild and medium-to-severe clinical course. Absolutely all of the patients had intensive dental caries and inflammatory diseases of the paradontium that exceeded the average statistical level for Moscow both in terms of incidence and severity. As many as 20-60% of patients suffering from inflammatory intestinal diseases also had such disorders of the mouth cavity mucous membrane as angular cheilitis, labial fissures, glossitis or aphthous stomatitis. The reduction of the al

This is a review of studies conducted from 1988-90 on the oral consequences of snuff and chewing tobacco use among professional baseball players. About half of the players studied were smokeless tobacco (ST) users, the majority of whom used snuff. Compared with non-users, players who used ST showed a significantly higher prevalence of leukoplakia, which was related to placement of the ST quid, and the frequency, amount, duration, and type of ST used. Sites adjacent to these mucosal lesions showed an increased prevalence of gingival recession with associated attachment loss, cervical abrasion,

This article presents the oral situation of 11 anorectic and 41 bulimic patients and compares it with 50 healthy control persons. While patients with an eating disorder showed less signs of gingival inflammation (SBI: anorexia: 14.6%; bulimia: 12.5%; controls: 44.7%), they had clearly more enamel erosions than healthy control persons. In 27 of 41 bulimic patients a bilateral swelling of the parotid gland was found. A significant correlation between the parotid enlargement and enamel erosion exists in bulimic patients with an anorectic prephase. Patients with an eating disorder had higher level

OBJECTIVE: Identification of mutations in the inverted formin-2 (INF2) gene in patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease combined with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) in order to expand the genetic and phenotypic spectrum.
METHODS: We sequenced INF2 in 5 patients with CMT disease and FSGS. Mutations were subsequently screened in family members of the index patient and 264 control individuals.
RESULTS: In 3 patients, we detected 2 novel de novo INF2 mutations (p.Leu77Arg and p.Leu69_Ser72del) and a third, most likely de novo mutation (p.Gly114Asp). One of our patients displaye

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is an oral health condition in which cariogenic bacteria demineralize and decay teeth. It arises due to interaction between the host, environment, and oral microbiome. Current terminologies and ontologies, however, do not accurately represent the important role that the microbiome has in the formation of carious lesions. Rather, they focus on the anatomical features of carious lesions and often obfuscate the distinctions between dental caries as a disease affecting a tooth, as lesions that are produced because of the disease, and as lesions produced as a result of dys

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) is the most common hereditary peripheral neuropathy with an incidence of 1:2500. CMT2 clinical symptoms include distal muscle weakness and atrophy, sensory loss, toe and foot deformities, with some patients presenting with reduced nerve conduction velocity. Mutations in the neurofilament light chain (NEFL) gene result in a specific form of CMT2 disease, CMT2E. NEFL encodes the protein, NF-L, one of the core intermediate filament proteins that contribute to the maintenance and stability of the axonal cytoskeleton. To better understand the underlying biology of CMT2E di

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (A. actinomycetecomitans) is a Gram-negative bacterial species that is an essential component of the oral microbiota. Due to its aggregative properties, it plays a role in the pathogenesis of human diseases. The presence of the surface proteins Fim, Briae, and microvesicles enables the bacterium to adhere to the epithelial surface and the tooth's surface. The presence of leukotoxin A (LtxA), which plays an important role in the pathogenicity of the bacterium, has been associated with both periodontitis and the etiology of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A. acti

SMA with respiratory distress type 1 (SMARD1) and Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 2S (CMT2S) are results of mutations in immunoglobulin mu DNA binding protein 2 (IGHMBP2). IGHMBP2 is a UPF1-like helicase with proposed roles in several cellular processes, including translation. This study examines activator of basal transcription 1 (ABT1), a modifier of SMARD1-nmd disease pathology. Microscale thermophoresis and dynamic light scattering demonstrate that IGHMBP2 and ABT1 proteins directly interact with high affinity. The association of ABT1 with IGHMBP2 significantly increases the ATPase and helicase a

Heat shock protein beta-1 (HSPB1), is a ubiquitously expressed, multifunctional protein chaperone. Mutations in HSPB1 result in the development of a late-onset, distal hereditary motor neuropathy type II (dHMN) and axonal Charcot-Marie Tooth disease with sensory involvement (CMT2F). The functional consequences of HSPB1 mutations associated with hereditary neuropathy are unknown. HSPB1 also displays neuroprotective properties in many neuronal disease models, including the motor neuron disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). HSPB1 is upregulated in SOD1-ALS animal models during disease prog

The cytoplasmic dynein-dynactin genes are attractive candidates for neurodegenerative disorders given their functional role in retrograde transport along neurons. The cytoplasmic dynein heavy chain (DYNC1H1) gene has been implicated in various neurodegenerative disorders, and dynactin 1 (DCTN1) genes have been implicated in a wide spectrum of disorders including motor neuron disease, Parkinson's disease, spinobulbar muscular atrophy and hereditary spastic paraplegia. However, the involvement of other dynactin genes with inherited peripheral neuropathies (IPN) namely, hereditary sensory neuropa

This study reports the occurrence of renal lesions in cetaceans from the coast of Brazil subjected to necropsy examination between 1996 and 2011. The animals (n = 192) were by-caught in fishing nets, were found dead on beaches or died despite attempted rehabilitation. Kidney samples were evaluated grossly and microscopically and, depending on the histopathological findings, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analyses were conducted. Due to autolysis, a diagnosis was reached in only 128 animals, of which 82 (64.1%) had kidney lesions. Cystic renal disease was the most common lesion observe

Sjogren syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disease that affects exocrine glands and therefore may affect the gastrointestinal system, from the mouth, esophagus, and bowel to the liver and pancreas. Oral involvement in SS is mainly characterized by dryness, with a wide spectrum of symptoms, from mild-to-severe xerostomia with dysgeusia and tooth decay. The dysphagia, although common, does not correlate with the reduced salivary flow rate or the dysmotility that may be present. Dyspepsia, found in up to 23% of patients, may be associated with gastritis, reduced acid production, and antiparietal cell

The presence or absence of periodontal disease is determined by the equilibrium between the challenging microbial deposits, adhering to the tooth surface, and the host response of the individual patient. The possibility of affecting host response is limited. In primary prevention the main emphasis is therefore on the daily brushing of the teeth at home. The susceptible patient needs, in addition, suitable interdental hygiene measures. At school age, bleeding from more than three sextants of the dentition should be used as a sign of treatment need. Whenever calculus or other retentive factors p

Orthodontics is a periodontal treatment. "Guided orthodontic regeneration" (GOR) procedures use orthodontic movements in perio-restorative patients. The GOR technique includes a guided orthodontic "soft tissue" regeneration (GOTR) and a guided orthodontic "bone" regeneration (GOBR) with a plastic soft tissue approach and a regenerating reality. The increased amount of soft tissue gained with orthodontic movement can be used for subsequent periodontal regenerative techniques. The increased amount of bone can as well improve primary implant stability and, eventually, simplify a GTR technique to
