Mineral content of calcified tissues in cystic fibrosis mice.

Although abnormal hard tissue mineralization is a recognized complication of cystic fibrosis (CF), the pathogenesis leading from the defective cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein is poorly understood. We hypothesized that CFTR plays a direct role in the mineralization of bone and teeth and tested the hypothesis using CF mouse models [CFTR(-) mice]. In vivo measurements by dual-emission X-ray absorpitometry (DEXA) indicated that bone mineral density (BMD) was reduced in CF mice as compared to gender-matched littermates. However, no change was evident after correct

Association of edentulousness with systemic factors in elderly people living at home.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of edentulousness with systemic factors: age, gender, tobacco-smoking, alcohol intake, body mass index … sness. Advanced age was related to an edentulous maxilla. The relationship between asthma and total tooth loss in the maxilla might suggest a local oral effect of medications used by asthmatic patients.

Non-surgical adjunctive interventions for accelerating tooth movement in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment.

BACKGROUND: Deviation from a normal bite can be defined as malocclusion. Orthodontic treatment takes 20 months on average to correct malocclusion. Accelerating the rate of tooth movement may help to reduce the duration of orthodontic treatment and associated unwanted effects including orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR), demineralisation and reduced patient motivation and compliance. Several non-surgical adjuncts have been advocated with the aim of accelerating the rate of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM).         OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of non-surgical adjunc

A novel case of concurrent occurrence of demyelinating-polyneuropathy-causing PMP22 duplication and SOX10 gene mutation producing severe hypertrophic neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy, also referred to as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), is most often caused by a duplication of the peripheral myelin protein 22 (PMP22) gene. This duplication causes CMT type 1A (CMT1A). CMT1A rarely occurs in combination with other hereditary neuromuscular disorders. However, such rare genetic coincidences produce a severe phenotype and have been reported in terms of "double trouble" overlapping syndrome. Waardenburg syndrome (WS) is the most common form of a hereditary syndromic deafness. It is primarily characterized by pigmentation anom

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of oxidative stress: We should treat it that way.

Periodontitis is a highly prevalent disease. As it progresses, it causes serious morbidity in the form of periodontal abscesses and tooth loss and, in the latter stages, pain. It is also now known that periodontitis is strongly associated with several nonoral diseases. Thus, patients with periodontitis are at greater risk for the development and/or exacerbation of diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cardiovascular diseases, among other conditions. Although it is without question that specific groups of oral bacteria which populate dental plaque play a causative role in the dev…

Distribution of Periodontal Pockets Among Smokers and Nonsmokers in Patients with Chronic Periodontitis: A Cross-sectional Study.

Context Cigarette smoking is a well-established risk factor for periodontitis and carries an increased risk for loss of periodontal attachment as well as bone loss. Aims The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether disease severity differs between smokers and nonsmokers in a group of chronic periodontitis patients by assessing the periodontal probing depth (PPD) and bleeding on probing (BOP). Materials and methods The study included 150 individuals, 75 smokers and 75 nonsmokers, in the age group of 35-60 years. Subjects with chronic periodontitis were selected and included in th

Relationships among clinical measures of periodontal disease and their associations with systemic markers.

BACKGROUND: Recent investigations of the relationship between periodontitis and systemic disease require that periodontal disease also must be thought of as a disease process that is an exposure for a systemic disease or condition (outcome), rather than as the outcome itself. When viewing periodontal disease as an exposure, investigators must consider the clinical, microbiological, and inflammatory components of periodontitis that potentially convey risk for the systemic outcome of interest, which may or may not be the same as those associated with the assessments used to define tooth-based di

[Long-term observation of patients with trauma of the lower anterior primary teeth].

Three patients who had had trauma of the lower primary central incisors at the age of 1.5 years or less were observed with regard to the IIIB and/or IVA after eruption of the permanent dentition, and the findings were discussed from the viewpoint of space control. Patient 1 suffered shedding and loss of A perpendicular A following a fall downstairs at the age of 1.5 years. Measurement of the distance between B perpendicular B teeth revealed a tendency toward space closure and decrease until the age of 4 years and 6 months. At the age of 5 years and 11 months, the space was greater than that at

EARLY IMPLANT OUTCOMES IN ADULTS WITH DENTAL DECAY TREATED WITH PHOTODYNAMIC TREATMENT.

A fast implant is a kind of implant to place in the cavity right away after dental extraction. These implants are shown to maintain cervical marrow and reduce the number of surgery operations required for patients. The Photodynamic treatment (PDT) uses antimicrobial processes to supplement nonsurgical periodontal therapy. Combined through the scaling and root planning (SRP), and PDT is more effective. This study aims to assess the effects of PDT on initial findings with dental implants (DI) placed in patients having gum disease with SRP against patients who do not at the 12-month follow-up poi

The relationship between periodontal diseases and diabetes: an overview.

Diabetes mellitus, caused by the malfunction of insulin-dependent glucose and lipid metabolism, presents with the classical triad of symptoms: polydypsia, polyuria, and polyphagia which are often accompanied by chronic fatigue and loss of weight. Complications of diabetes mellitus include retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, and cardiovascular disease. Periodontal diseases are infections affecting the periodontium and resulting in the loss of tooth support. The association between diabetes mellitus and periodontitis has long been discussed with conflicting conclusions. Both of these diseases

The relationship between cause of death and skeletal markers of physiological stress in the Hamann-Todd collection.

OBJECTIVES: Socioeconomic status, past stress events, and other factors may contribute to the cumulative burden of physiological stress, which influences an individual's susceptibility to mortality and cause of death (COD). Here, we explore the association between skeletal evidence of stress and COD in the Hamann-Todd Osteological Collection (HTOC), a predominantly low socioeconomic status sample from the late 19th and early 20th century. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Skeletal markers of stress including linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH), stature, and antemortem tooth loss (AMTL) were analyzed in 298 i…

Two loss-of-function ANKRD11 variants in Chinese patients with short stature and a possible molecular pathway.

KBG syndrome is a rare genetic disease characterized mainly by skeletal abnormalities, distinctive facial features, and intellectual disability. Heterozygous mutations in ANKRD11 gene, or deletion of 16q24.3 that includes ANKRD11 gene are the cause of KBG syndrome. We describe two patients presenting with short stature and partial facial features, whereas no intellectual disability or hearing loss was observed in them. Two ANKRD11 variants, c.4039_4041del (p. Lys1347del) and c.6427C > G (p. Leu2143Val), were identified in this study. Both of them were classified as variants of uncertain signif

Longitudinal analysis on the effect of insertion torque on delayed single implants: A 3-year randomized clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Implant stability is commonly related to insertion torque. Recently, it has been suggested that higher insertion torque may lead to greater bone resorption. PURPOSE: The aim of the present randomized clinical study was to evaluate the role of different insertion torque values in terms of implant success, marginal bone loss, and facial soft tissues recession. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients requiring a single dental implant were recruited and randomized to receive one of two implants with the same macro-geometry but different cutting designs. First group consists of a 90 degrees c

A 4-year prospective study of the progression of periodontal disease in a rural Chinese population.

OBJECTIVES: The natural progression of periodontitis in the Chinese population is not well researched. We investigated the progression of periodontal disease over 4 years in 15-44-year-old Chinese villagers with no access to regular dental care. METHODS: In 1992, 486 villagers were enrolled, and in 1996, 413 villagers were re-examined. Probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) were examined at six sites per tooth. Sites with ΔCAL ≥3 mm were defined as active sites. Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses were performed using means and percentile plots. RESULTS: The mean CAL in

Reliability of direct and indirect clinical attachment level measurements.

AIMS: To investigate the influence of subject-, tooth- and site-level characteristics on intra-examiner reproducibility of direct and indirect clinical attachment level (CALDIR and CALIND ) recordings, and to quantify the impact of less-than-perfect reliability on our ability to assess periodontitis progression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Within a 1-week interval, a single examiner performed duplicate probing depth (PD), CALDIR and gingival recession (GR) recordings in six sites of all teeth present in 148 periodontitis patients. CALIND was calculated on the basis of the PD and GR. RESULTS: Agre
