PURPOSE: To study differences in systemic and ocular factors between eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) with an initial visual field defect (VFD) starting in the superior hemifield and those starting in the inferior hemifield in a population-based setting.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The data were analyzed from eyes with definitive category-1 POAG based on the International Society of Geographic and Epidemiological Ophthalmology criteria with VFD constriction in the superior or inferior hemifield (superior and inferior VFD groups, respectively) found in 2 Japanese population-based glaucom

BACKGROUND: It is still debatable whether visual field defects in glaucoma have a reversible component and to what extent a temporary loss can be provoked.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the response of the visual function to a cold provocation in glaucoma patients, particularly to test whether subjects with Flammer syndrome (FS) behaved differently from subjects without FS.
METHODS: Ten (10) primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients with FS, 7 POAG patients without FS, and 11 healthy controls were tested with program G2 on the Octopus 101 perimeter before and after putting one hand in cold wat

INTRODUCTION: Intraocular lenses have always been a controversial topic in pediatric cataract surgery. In the early 1990s in the post-Soviet states of Eastern Europe, intraocular lenses promised an easier full-time correction and amblyopia treatment. Since 1991, ophthalmologists in Latvia have been implanting intraocular lenses in infants. Amount of the postoperative myopic shift and its influencing factors, analyzed in this article, are important indicators of congenital cataract treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review off 85 children (137 eyes) who underwent foldable

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: A retrospective clinical study was performed to assess whether photographically screened and remotely read images for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) allowed for timely and accurate diagnosis of treatment-warranted ROP compared to bedside examination.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 130 eyes of 65 premature neonates in born at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak NICU. Bedside examined (2006 to 2010) and telemedicine screened (2010 to 2014) neonates were compared to identify whether there is a statistical difference in postmenstrual age (PMA) at the time of

SIGNIFICANCE: The first report on the use of peripheral prisms (p-prisms) for patients with left neglect and homonymous visual field defects (HVFDs).
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate if patients with left hemispatial neglect and HVFDs benefit from p-prisms to expand the visual field and improve obstacle detection.
METHODS: Patients (24 with HVFDs, 10 of whom had left neglect) viewed an animated, virtual, shopping mall corridor and reported if they would have collided with a human obstacle that appeared at various offsets up to 13.5° from their simulated walking path. The

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder are considered the signature injuries of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. With the extensive use of improvised explosive devices by the enemy, the concussive effects from blast have a greater potential to cause mild TBI (mTBI) in military Service Members. These mTBI can be associated with other physical and psychological health problems, including mTBI-induced visual processing and eye movement dysfunctions. Our study assessed if any visual dysfunctions existed in those surveyed in non-Veterans Administration (VA)

BACKGROUND: In this prospective case series, we aimed to characterise the temporal evolution of functional and structural measures in the afferent visual pathway of patients with acute optic neuritis (ON).
METHODS: Fifty patients with ON were followed over 12 months. Testing with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (LogMAR) visual acuity and Humphrey perimetry central 30-2 threshold (SITA strategy) was performed at baseline, 3, 6 and 12 months after symptom onset. PURPOSE: To describe the location of initial visual field defects (VFD) in glaucoma, their modes of deterioration, and those factors associated with different modes of deterioration.
METHODS: Patients with POAG were categorized into four groups based on three consecutive initial VFD: (1) superior paracentral defects (PD), (2) inferior PD, (3) superior nasal defects (ND), and (4) inferior ND. According to the worsening of the VF, four further subgroups were identified: (1) superior central worsening (CW), (2) inferior CW, (3) superior peripheral or nasal worsening (NW), and (4) inferior NW. OBJECTIVE: To study the distribution of refractive errors among adults of European descent.
DESIGN: Population-based eye study in Germany with 15010 participants aged 35-74 years.
METHODS: The study participants underwent a detailed ophthalmic examination according to a standardised protocol. Refractive error was determined by an automatic refraction device (Humphrey HARK 599) without cycloplegia. Definitions for the analysis were myopia <-0.5 dioptres (D), hyperopia >+0.5 D, astigmatism >0.5 cylinder D and anisometropia >1.0 D difference in the spherical equivalent between the eyes. Exclusi

PURPOSE: The prospective study evaluated the effects of optical defocus on kinetic sensitivity using automated kinetic perimetry.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 17 eyes of 17 healthy young participants were evaluated. All of the participants had myopia (≥ -5.00 D) and mild to no astigmatism (<1.00 D). Automated kinetic perimetry was performed using the Octopus 900 perimeter with Goldmann stimuli III4e, I4e, I3e, I2e, and I1e, with stimuli presented at 14 predetermined meridians, and a velocity of 3°/s. Optical defocus was induced with soft contact lenses, and varied in 1 D increments between 0 an

PURPOSE: To study the impact of eye motion on visual field extent.
METHODS: Visual fields were tested in 15 healthy volunteers with the Goldmann perimeter using a V4 test object, from seen to unseen, first in primary position of gaze, then allowing eye motion. Temporal points falling out of the cupola were tested again after a controlled nasal head rotation using a headband prototype fitted with a line-laser level having two orthogonal vial levels. Visual field surface areas (cm(2) ) were calculated as projections on a 30-cm virtual Goldmann cupola, whose extent would have been large enough t

OBJECTIVES: The life-span theory of control is applied to study change in vision-specific control strategies in visually impaired older individuals, depending on performance in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) and depressed mood.
METHOD: Longitudinal data from visually impaired individuals (at baseline: N = 364; mean age = 82.8 years; visual acuity less than 20/60) measured at three occasions with 1-year intervals in-between were analyzed. A newly established vision-specific control scale to assess selective primary control (SPC), selective secondary control (SSC), compensatory

PURPOSE: To investigate the relations among best-corrected visual acuity, retinal sensitivity, retinal thickness, and retinal volume in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion, and macular edema.
METHODS: In 49 consecutive patients with branch retinal vein occlusion (mean age, 68.2 ± 9.9 years; 25 women and 24 men), macular function was documented by microperimetry and best-corrected visual acuity was determined on the logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution scale. Retinal thickness and retinal volume were measured by optical coherence tomography, and mean retinal sensitivity was cal

OBJECTIVE: To determine the risk factors and outcomes of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in infants with a birth weight of 1,501-2,000 g.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical characteristics and risk factors were compared and nonconditional logistic regression analysis was performed to determine independent predictors for ROP.
RESULTS: There were 54 (9.8%) cases of ROP in 553 patients with a birth weight of 1,501-2,000 g. The most common classification of ROP was in stage 1 (50/54, 92.6%; stages 2 and 3 ROP: 2 infants each). By logistic regression analysis, the following factors independently pr
