Estimation of in vivo mechanical properties of the aortic wall: A multi-resolution direct search approach.

The patient-specific biomechanical analysis of the aorta requires in vivo mechanical properties of individual patients. Existing approaches for estimating in vivo material properties often demand high computational cost and mesh correspondence of the aortic wall between different cardiac phases. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-resolution direct search (MRDS) approach for estimation of the nonlinear, anisotropic constitutive parameters of the aortic wall. Based on the finite element (FE) updating scheme, the MRDS approach consists of the following three steps: (1) representing constitut

Novel anisotropic engineered cardiac tissues: studies of electrical propagation.

The goal of this study was to engineer cardiac tissue constructs with uniformly anisotropic architecture, and to evaluate their electrical function using multi-site optical mapping of cell membrane potentials. Anisotropic polymer scaffolds made by leaching of aligned sucrose templates were seeded with neonatal rat cardiac cells and cultured in rotating bioreactors for 6-14 days. Cells aligned and interconnected inside the scaffolds and when stimulated by a point electrode, supported macroscopically continuous, anisotropic impulse propagation. By culture day 14, the ratio of conduction velociti

[Tractography of the visual pathways: routine examination in magnetic resonance imaging].

Water diffusion analysis in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides an elective visualization of fiber tract orientations in cerebral white matter, especially for optic tracts. We explored 25 patients from 18 to 45 years of age, with normal MRI in 20 subjects, and radiological anomalies in five. On a 1.5 Tesla MRI apparatus, diffusion tensor acquisitions were performed in 5 minutes 58 seconds with an EPI Single Shot sequence covering the entire brain. Image displacements were precluded by patient information and adequate fixation, then digitally corrected on workstations. Volume merging and

Molecular motion of spin labeled side chains in alpha-helices: analysis by variation of side chain structure.

Two single cysteine substitution mutants at helix surface sites in T4 lysozyme (D72C and V131C) have been modified with a series of nitroxide methanethiosulfonate reagents to investigate the structural and dynamical origins of their electron paramagnetic resonance spectra. The novel reagents include 4-substituted derivatives of either the pyrroline or pyrrolidine series of nitroxides. The spectral line shapes were analyzed as a function of side chain structure and temperature using a simulation method with a single order parameter and diffusion rates about three orthogonal axes as parameters.

Identification of neurobehavioural symptom groups based on shared brain mechanisms.

Most psychopathological disorders develop in adolescence. The biological basis for this development is poorly understood. To enhance diagnostic characterization and develop improved targeted interventions, it is critical to identify behavioural symptom groups that share neural substrates. We ran analyses to find relationships between behavioural symptoms and neuroimaging measures of brain structure and function in adolescence. We found two symptom groups, consisting of anxiety/depression and executive dysfunction symptoms, respectively, that correlated with distinct sets of brain regions and i

Seeking Huntington disease biomarkers by multimodal, cross-sectional basal ganglia imaging.

Neurodegeneration of the striatum in Huntington disease (HD) is characterized by loss of medium-spiny neurons, huntingtin nuclear inclusions, reactive gliosis, and iron accumulation. Neuroimaging allows in vivo detection of the macro- and micro-structural changes that occur from presymptomatic stages of the disease (preHD). The aim of our study was to evaluate the reliability of multimodal imaging as an in vivo biomarker of vulnerability and development of the disease and to characterize macro- and micro-structural changes in subcortical nuclei in HD. Macrostructure (T1-weighted images), micro

Neuroimaging in human dystonia.

Functional neuroimaging, such as positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), provides a valuable technique for detecting regional changes in brain metabolic activity associated with human disease. These techniques have been applied in different dystonic disorders including primary generalized dystonia and dopa-responsive dystonia (DRD), as well as focal dystonic syndromes such as torticollis, writer's cramp, and blepharospasm. A common finding is abnormality of the basal ganglia and associated outflow pathways to sensorimotor cortex and other regions in

White matter plasticity in healthy older adults: The effects of aerobic exercise.

White matter deterioration is associated with cognitive impairment in healthy aging and Alzheimer's disease. It is critical to identify interventions that can slow down white matter deterioration. So far, clinical trials have failed to demonstrate the benefits of aerobic exercise on the adult white matter using diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Here, we report the effects of a 6-month aerobic walking and dance interventions (clinical trial NCT01472744) on white matter integrity in healthy older adults (n = 180, 60-79 years) measured by changes in the ratio of calibrated T1- to T2-weighted

Hemispheric asymmetries in dorsal language pathway white-matter tracts: A magnetic resonance imaging tractography and functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Introduction Previous studies have shown that the arcuate fasciculus has a leftward asymmetry in right-handers that could be correlated with the language lateralisation defined by functional magnetic resonance imaging. Nonetheless, information about the asymmetry of the other fibres that constitute the dorsal language pathway is scarce. Objectives This study investigated the asymmetry of the white-matter tracts involved in the dorsal language pathway through the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) technique, in relation to language hemispheric dominance determined by task-dependent functional magne

Isotropic proton-density-weighted high-resolution MRI for volume measurement of reconstructed orbital fractures--a comparison with multislice CT.

OBJECTIVE: The cause of enophthalmos as a late complication after orbital reconstruction is poorly investigated. Multislice CT (MSCT) is usually employed for its assessment, in spite of limitations regarding soft tissue depiction/imaging, as well as the implication of radiation and production of artifacts. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been shown to be a valuable alternative. The aim of this study was to establish a bony and soft tissue orbital volume calculation method based on different high-resolution MRI sequences compared to MSCT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-seven patients were

Isosurfaces as deformable models for magnetic resonance angiography.

Vascular disease produces changes in lumenal shape evident in magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). However, quantification of vascular shape from MRA is problematic due to image artifacts. Prior deformable models for vascular surface reconstruction primarily resolve problems of initialization of the surface mesh. However, initialization can be obtained in a trivial manner for MRA using isosurfaces. We propose a methodology for deforming the isosurface to conform to the boundaries of objects in the image with minimal a priori assumptions of object shape. As in conventional methods, external fo
