Non-haem iron-mediated oxidative stress in haemoglobin E beta-thalassaemia.

INTRODUCTION: Haemoglobin (Hb) E beta-thalassaemia is a common thalassaemic disorder in Southeast Asia and is very common in the eastern and north-eastern parts of India. The disease cause rapid erythrocyte destruction due to the free radical mediated injury but factors for the oxidative injury are not clearly known. We investigated the free reactive iron (non-haem) mediated insult in Hb E beta-thalassaemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty Hb E beta-thalassaemic patients (age range, 3 to 15 years) who had undergone blood transfusion at least 1 month prior to sampling and 32 normal healthy indiv

Chronic dopaminergic stimulation in Parkinson's disease: from dyskinesias to impulse control disorders.

Dopamine is an essential neurotransmitter for many brain functions, and its dysfunction has been implicated in both neurological and psychiatric disorders. Parkinson's disease is an archetypal disorder of dopamine dysfunction characterised by motor, cognitive, behavioural, and autonomic symptoms. While effective for motor symptoms, dopamine replacement therapy is associated not only with motor side-effects, such as levodopa-induced dyskinesia, but also behavioural side-effects such as impulse control disorders (eg, pathological gambling and shopping, binge eating, and hypersexuality), punding

Drug addiction is not an independent risk factor for oncogenic human papillomavirus infections or high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia: case-control study nested within the Latin American Screening study cohort.

Drug abuse (addiction) has been listed among the risk factors for human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, but no case-control studies exist to rule out sexual behaviour and other potential confounders. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of drug addiction as an independent predictor of HR-HPV infections and (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia) CIN2+ in an age-matched case-control (1:4) study nested within the prospective Latin American Screening (LAMS) study cohort. All 109 women in the LAMS cohort (n=12,114) reporting drug abuse/addiction were matched with four controls (n = 436) of

ADHD and substance use disorders: developmental aspects and the impact of stimulant treatment.

Adolescents and adults with substance use disorders often demonstrate symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. These core symptoms of ADHD may contribute to the development of substance use disorders by promoting antisocial behavior and substance use; conversely, substance use itself can adversely affect these symptoms. Common deficits in self-regulatory processes could underlie the developmental progression of these disorders, deficits further worsened by ongoing substance use. Some investigators have questioned whether stimulant treatment itself could promote substance abuse,

A case-matched comparison of readmission patterns between primary methamphetamine-using and primary cocaine-using adolescents engaged in inpatient substance-abuse treatment.

OBJECTIVE: In the United States and Canada, elevated patterns of methamphetamine-related treatment admissions among youth have triggered questions about appropriate substance-abuse treatment strategies for methamphetamine-using adolescents. This study aimed to provide a comparative examination of the readmission patterns of primary methamphetamine-using and primary cocaine-using adolescents to a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based alcohol-and-drug inpatient treatment program. METHODS: The current study employed a 5-year medical-chart review of all consecutive admissions to an inpatient,

Prevalence of adult problem and pathological gambling between 2000 and 2005: an update.

BACKGROUND: Excessive gambling is a prominent Public Health problem with high prevalence rates in many countries. Substance abuse and other co-morbidities often constitute a major health hazard for the person which gambles with a loss of material and social resources, as well as being a major concern for his or her significant others. The present study updates and extends prevalence data to include work published between 2000 and 2005 in English and other European languages. METHODS: In a three-step search and exclusion process, studies with current adult prevalence rates were gathered. RESU

Case-control study of intracranial tumors among employees at a petrochemical research facility.

This case-control study evaluated the relation between potential exposure to chemical and physical agents and the occurrence of intracranial tumors among employees at a petrochemical research facility. Cases were employees with glioma (n = 6) or benign intracranial tumors (n = 6). Controls (n = 119) were individually matched to cases on gender and birth year, and they were alive and did not have an intracranial tumor at the case's diagnosis date. Exposure information came from interviews with subjects or surrogates and from corporate records on agents used in research projects. Analyses comput

Risk factors for homelessness among indigent urban adults with no history of psychotic illness: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: This study identified risk factors for homelessness among indigent urban adults without dependent children and with no history of psychotic illness. METHODS: We conducted a matched case-control study, stratified by sex, of 200 newly homeless men and women and 200 indigent men and women with no history of homelessness. Newly homeless case subjects were recruited from shelter assessment centers in New York City. Never-homeless control subjects, selected from public assistance centers, were single adults applying for home relief. Control subjects were matched with case subjects accor

Relationships of occupational hazards with burnout: an assessment of measures and models.

A survey of aircraft maintenance technicians with the Canadian Forces (N = 157) found support for a model of burnout and occupational risk assessment. The model depicted employees' assessment of occupational risk as a function of the prevalence and lethalness of workplace hazards, as well as of the amount of control employees experience over their interactions with these hazards. A confirmatory factor analysis, in which LISREL analysis was used, supported an integrated model of risk perception and burnout. In this model, the employee's sense of control in managing occupational hazards was pivo

Reduced risk of hepatitis B and hepatitis C among injection drug users in the Tacoma syringe exchange program.

OBJECTIVES: This case-control study examined the association between syringe exchange use and hepatitis B and C in injection drug users. METHODS: Case patients included 28 injection drug users with acute hepatitis B and 20 with acute hepatitis C reported to the health department in a sentinel hepatitis surveillance county; control subjects were injection drug users with no markers of exposure to hepatitis B or C (n = 38 and 26, respectively) attending health department services during the same period. Data were abstracted from clinic records. RESULTS: Seventy-five percent of case patients wi

Cocaine: friend or foe? (Part 2).

The cocaine epidemic is growing at an alarming rate in the United States. Medical and social implications of cocaine abuse are many and include such aspects as intoxication, personal, financial and moral ruin. Complications associated with cocaine use more commonly involve the cardiovascular, central nervous system and the reproductive systems. One of the major concerns regarding cocaine abuse goes far beyond its ill effects on the user. High incidence of congenital malformations and the learning and behavioral disorders in the infants results in a growing number of "misfit" or "undesirable" c

Caffeine induces alveolar bone loss in rats submitted to orthodontic movement via activation of receptor activator of nuclear factor ҡB, receptor activator of nuclear factor ҡB ligand, and osteoprotegerin pathway.

INTRODUCTION: Caffeine is a widely consumed substance with several effects on bone metabolism. This study aimed to investigate the effect of caffeine on the bone tissue of rats submitted to orthodontic movement. METHODS: Twenty-five male Wistar rats underwent orthodontic movement (21 days) of the first permanent maxillary molars on the left side. The experimental group (caffeine; n = 13) and control group (n = 12) received caffeine and water, respectively, by gavage. Microcomputed tomography was performed to analyze orthodontic movement. Histologic analysis of the inflammatory infiltrate and

Impaired cognitive control moderates the relation between the attribution of incentive salience and severity of consumption in patients with methamphetamine dependence.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive control and the attribution of incentive salience are two key neuropsychological processes proposed to explain substance use disorder (SUD). However, little is known about how they interact to influence the severity of drug use in people with SUD. OBJECTIVE: To determine if cognitive control exerts a moderating effect on the relation between the attribution of salience to drug/reward-related cues and the severity of drug use in SUD cases. METHOD: Sixty-nine SUD cases with methamphetamine as the main drug of consumption were selected and evaluated. Participants performed

Lifestyle in Undergraduate Students and Demographically Matched Controls during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Spain.

Few studies have used a multidimensional approach to describe lifestyle changes among undergraduate students during the COVID-19 pandemic or have included controls. This study aimed to evaluate lifestyle behaviors and mental health of undergraduate students and compare them with an age and sex-matched control group. A cross-sectional web survey using snowball sampling was conducted several months after the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic in Spain. A sample of 221 students was recruited. The main outcome was the total SMILE-C score. Students showed a better SMILE-C score than controls (79.8 + 8.

Increased expression of macrophages and inflammatory cytokines at tendon origin in patients with chronic lateral epicondylitis.

BACKGROUND: The success of anti-inflammatory medications and corticosteroid injections in controlling chronic lateral epicondylitis symptoms suggests an underlying inflammatory pathology that is also causative of the pain experienced by patients; however, evidence regarding inflammatory mediators and cells remains inconclusive. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study that included a total of 24 participants (10 patients and 14 controls). Extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon samples were obtained from patients, and flexor carpi radialis tendon samples were obtained from control subjects. W

The factor structure of psychiatric comorbidity among Iraq/Afghanistan-era veterans and its relationship to violence, incarceration, suicide attempts, and suicidality.

The present research examined how incarceration, suicide attempts, suicidality, and difficulty controlling violence relate to the underlying factor structure of psychiatric comorbidity among a large sample of Iraq/Afghanistan-era veterans (N=1897). Diagnostic interviews established psychiatric diagnoses; self-report measures assessed history of incarceration, difficulty controlling violence, suicide attempts, and suicidality. A 3-factor measurement model characterized by latent factors for externalizing-substance-use disorders (SUD), distress, and fear provided excellent fit to the data. Alcoh
