A Dietary Pattern for High Estimated Total Fat Amount Is Associated with Enhanced Allergy Sensitization and Atopic Diseases among Singapore/Malaysia Young Chinese Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Frequent dietary patterns for fast food diets are suggested to be a risk factor for atopic disease development. Excessive dietary fats in fast foods are postulated to promote low-grade chronic inflammation. However, no studies in Asia have yet to characterize the dietary pattern for high-fat foods with atopic diseases. Thus, this study aims to assess the association between dietary fats with the prevalence of atopic diseases in an allergic cohort. METHODS: Through an investigator-administered questionnaire that follows the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood

CLIC1 acts as a compensatory protective molecule to regulate the vascular endothelial barrier integrity in cutaneous inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Vascular dysfunction is common in inflammatory skin disorders, but its regulation remains unclear. METHODS: Through bioinformatics, we identified CLIC1 upregulation in psoriasis and atopic dermatitis endothelial cells. Using gain- and loss-of-function assays in endothelial cells, alongside transcriptomics, human skin biopsies, and an imiquimod-induced psoriasis mouse model, we investigated CLIC1's functional role. RESULTS: CLIC1 overexpression enhanced endothelial barrier integrity and reduced neutrophil transmigration, whereas CLIC1 knockdown had opposite effects. Mechanisticall

Interleukin-24 in type 2 immune diseases.

Interleukin (IL)-24, a member of the IL-20 cytokine family, is secreted by multiple cell types, such as immune cells (T cells, B cells, NK cells, macrophages), and non-immune cells (epithelial cells and fibroblasts). IL-24 and its downstream signaling pathways mediate vital biological processes, including processes governing cell growth, fate determination, cell death, and inflammation, albeit with effects that are context-dependent across disease states. In this review, we present comprehensive summary and recent breakthroughs in IL-24 characterization and its emerging pathogenic functions in

Are "clean" products safe for children? An analysis of contact allergens in "clean" children's products from a popular retailer.

BACKGROUND: Considering consumer trends toward the use of "clean" personal care products and increasing recognition of childhood allergic contact dermatitis, we sought to characterize the allergen profile of such children's products. METHODS: Ingredients of baby washes/shampoos, bubble baths, and moisturizers identified using the "Clean Baby" filter on Target®'s online marketplace were analyzed for relevant pediatric contact allergens. RESULTS: Product compositions declared fragrance in 82% of products, Compositae in 46%, cocamidopropyl betaine in 45%, glucosides in 37%, propylene glycol in

Handheld x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy evaluation of leather chromium and cobalt.

We present a 29-year-old non-atopic male apprentice power lineman and recreational cowboy with a case of allergic contact dermatitis due to both occupational and recreational exposure. He presented with a 4-month history of a pruritic, steroid-responsive, intermittent hand, foot and leg dermatitis. Patch testing was positive for chromium, cobalt and a piece of leather from his cowboy boots. His leather work gloves, inner lining of work harness, work boots and cowboy boots were assessed for chromium and cobalt content with handheld fluorescence x-ray spectrometry. Upon replacement of all leathe

Pityriasis amiantacea following bone marrow transplant.

Pityriasis amiantacea (PA) is a hair disorder characterized by matting of multiple hair shafts, typically occurring as an idiopathic condition. A 67-year-old woman with multiple myeloma who developed PA following a bone marrow transplant with melphalan conditioning is described. She noted initial changes in scalp hair regrowth 4 weeks posttransplant. During the next 4 months she developed multiple lesions of PA that rapidly responded to management, including mineral oil under occlusion in the evening followed by daily shampooing with alternating coal tar, salicylic acid, and ketoconazole shampo

Omenn's syndrome: lessons from a red baby.

Exfoliative dermatitis and erythroderma in infancy are rare. Clinicians need to be alert to the possible diagnosis of Omenn's syndrome (OS), a rare form of combined immunodeficiency in infants presenting with exfoliative dermatitis, erythroderma, recurrent infections, eosinophilia and raised IgE. OS is fatal unless treated by bone-marrow transplantation (BMT). We describe a 3-week-old girl who presented with a widespread scaly erythematous rash and stomatitis, and was initially treated for presumed atopic eczema and primary herpes stomatitis. Aged 3 months, she developed erythroderma, diarrhoe

Vitamin D supplementation in pregnant or breastfeeding women or young children for preventing asthma.

BACKGROUND: Randomised controlled studies evaluating vitamin D supplementation in pregnancy or early childhood for preventing childhood asthma have yielded inconclusive results. Previous systematic reviews of vitamin D for asthma prevention focused on studies comparing vitamin D to placebo or studies intervening in pregnancy, limiting the body of evidence. OBJECTIVES: Primary: to evaluate the efficacy of any vitamin D supplementation and high-dose vitamin D supplementation in early life, including the prenatal period, for preventing asthma in children. Secondary: to assess the efficacy of vit

Pollen-Food Allergy Syndrome in Children: Global Prevalence and Pathogenesis.

Pollen-food allergy syndrome is an IgE-mediated allergic condition resulting from cross-reactivity between pollen allergens and homologous proteins present in plant-derived foods. PFAS typically presents with rapid-onset itching, burning, swelling, and erythema of the oral cavity and pharynx, with symptoms usually limited to the oropharyngeal region, although systemic reactions, including respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms and, rarely, anaphylaxis, may occur. PFAS is strongly associated with the atopic phenotype and frequently coexists with allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and asthm

Correlations of thyroid autoantibodies with allergic diseases: A case-control study of 434 Chinese patients.

There is growing interest in the relationship between allergies and autoimmune diseases, although previous studies have yielded inconsistent results. The thyroglobulin (Tg)/thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) group consisted of 217 patients with positive thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) and/or TPOAb test results. Another set of 217 age- and sex-matched individuals with both TgAb- and TPOAb-negative results were selected as control group. History of allergic rhinitis (AR), chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), and/or atopic dermatitis (AD) was elicited before autoantibody detection. The association

The association of isoconazole-diflucortolone in the treatment of pediatric tinea corporis.

BACKGROUND: Tinea corporis is a common mycotic infection in children. Staphylococcus aureus superinfections may be observed in atopic children with tinea corporis suffering from severe pruritus and consequent scratching. OBJECTIVE: From 2006 to 2011, we observed 288 children with mycologically proven tinea corporis. In 39 of them (13.5%) tinea corporis was superinfected by S. aureus: all these children were affected by atopic dermatitis. We interpreted these bacterial superinfections as the clinical result of scratching due to pruritus. METHODS: In 2012, we decided to treat all children with

Maternal avoidance of eggs, cow's milk, and fish during lactation: effect on allergic manifestations, skin-prick tests, and specific IgE antibodies in children at age 4 years.

Two matched groups of children with a family history of atopy/allergy were observed from birth. In one group (n = 65) the mothers had a diet free from eggs, cow's milk, and fish during the first 3 months of lactation, whereas the mothers in the other group (n = 50) had a normal diet. Atopic/allergic manifestations, skin-prick tests, and specific IgE antibodies to egg white and cow's milk during the first 18 months of life have been reported previously. At 4 years of age the children underwent a clinical examination, skin-prick tests, and determination of specific IgE antibodies in serum agains

Complement's involvement in allergic Th2 immunity: a cross-barrier perspective.

Type 2 (Th2) allergic diseases are chronic conditions characterized by a Th2-polarized immune response to allergens. These diseases can be categorized by affected barrier sites: skin (atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis), gut (food allergy), and respiratory tract (e.g., asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis). The global prevalence of Th2 allergic diseases has increased the need for a deeper understanding of their pathophysiology. Several associations have been identified between genetic variants in the genes encoding components of the complement system and allergic disease. Moreover, level

Comparison of Pediatric Dermatology Conditions Across Telehealth and In-Person Visits During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Understanding the utility of virtual visits in pediatric dermatology practice has become increasingly important in the telehealth era. We compared the conditions diagnosed in pediatric dermatology between traditional in-person visits and virtual telehealth visits during the initial 8-month phase of the COVID-19 pandemic at an urban medical institution. When given the option, pediatric dermatology patients and their families were more likely to choose telehealth visits for the diagnosis and/or management of acne, hemangiomas, and contact dermatitis; however, they were more likely to choose in-p

Eczema in elderly people.

Eczema is one of the most common reasons for consultation in older people. Many differential diagnoses must be eliminated, including scabies, bullous pemphigoid, and mycosis fungoides. Contact dermatitis may also be considered and the chemical(s) in question may vary according to the comorbidities involved, in particular, depending on whether or not the patient has a leg ulcer. Drug-induced eczematous eruptions can occur in elderly people, mainly with antihypertensive drugs (calcium inhibitors, diuretics, etc.). Recently, de novo atopic dermatitis has been described in elderly subjects, and th

The Therapeutic Potential of Cannabinoids in Dermatology.

Cannabinoids have demonstrated utility in the management of cancer, obesity, and neurologic disease. More recently, their immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory properties have been identified for the treatment of several dermatologic conditions. This review thus assesses the therapeutic potential of phytocannabinoids, endoocannabinoids, and chemically synthetic cannabinoids in the management of cutaneous disease. The PubMed® and Scopus® databases were subsequently reviewed in December 2017 using MeSH and keywords, such as cannabinoid, THC, dermatitis, pruritus, and skin cancer. The search yi

[The Dutch College of General Practitioners practice guideline 'Eczema'].

The Dutch College of General Practitioners practice guideline 'Eczema' provides recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of common types of eczema: atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, acro-vesicular eczema, nummular eczema, hypostatic eczema, and asteatotic eczema. Age is an important factor when determining the type of eczema. According to the guideline, patient history and physical examination are sufficient in the diagnosis of eczema; additional investigations are rarely indicated. Moisturizing the skin with neutral emollients is the cornerstone of treatment for patients with ecze
