A Combined Exoscopic and Endoscopic Approach for Radical Temporal Bone Resection and Usefulness of the Endoscopic Approach to the Medial Aspect of the Temporal Bone.

Radical temporal bone resection (TBR) for lateral skull base malignancies is technically challenging because of the vital anatomical structures located at the medial part of the temporal bone and their limited exposure. A possible solution is to adopt an additional endoscopic approach for medial osteotomy to reduce blind spots. The authors aimed to describe a combined exoscopic and endoscopic approach (CEEA) for cranial dissection in radical TBR and to determine the usefulness of the endoscopic approach to the medial aspect of the temporal bone. Having utilized the CEEA in for cranial dissecti

Hyperviscosity Syndrome Induced Bilateral Visual and Auditory Impairment in Therapy Resistant Waldenström Macroglobulinemia with MYD88 and CXCR4 Mutations.

Hyperviscosity syndrome (HVS) is an emergent complication of Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) characterized by visual, neurologic, and rarely auditory impairment. We report a 69-year-old female with MYD88 and CXCR4-mutant WM who developed HVS resulting in bilateral blindness and deafness associated with neurologic manifestations including confusion, severe generalized weakness, and imbalance. Ophthalmologic evaluation revealed bilateral central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), diffuse retinal hemorrhages, macular edema, and serous macular detachments (SMD). Magnetic resonance imaging of the br

Analysis of temporal bone thickness outside of the petrous temporal bone between superior semicircular canal dehiscence and normal patients.

BACKGROUND: SSCD is a rare inner ear disorder. This study aims to compare the thickness of the temporal bone beyond the petrous portion between healthy subjects and those with SSCD to determine whether the etiopathology of SSCD is localized to the petrous temporal bone or generalized to other parts of the temporal bone. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of electronic medical records from September 2011 to February 2018 was conducted at a single-institution study at the University of California, Los Angeles. Participants were divided into two groups: Group 1 had a confirmed diagnosis of SS

Hearing Changes After Intratympanically Applied Steroids for Primary Therapy of Sudden Hearing Loss: A Meta-analysis Using Mathematical Simulations of Drug Delivery Protocols.

OBJECTIVE: Controlled and uncontrolled studies with primary intratympanic or combined intratympanic and systemic application of glucocorticosteroids for idiopathic sudden hearing loss were analyzed by means of a meta-analysis in an attempt to establish optimal local drug delivery protocols. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 25 studies with 28 treatment groups between January 2000 and June 2014 were selected that adequately described drug delivery protocols. Cochlear drug levels were calculated by a validated computer model of drug dispersion in the inner ear fluids based on the concentration and volum

Analytical and numerical modeling of the hearing system: Advances towards the assessment of hearing damage.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Hearing is an extremely complex phenomenon, involving a large number of interrelated variables that are difficult to measure in vivo. In order to investigate such process under simplified and well-controlled conditions, models of sound transmission have been developed through many decades of research. The value of modeling the hearing system is not only to explain the normal function of the hearing system and account for experimental and clinical observations, but to simulate a variety of pathological conditions that lead to hearing damage and hearing loss, as well as for development of audito

[The current problems related to Meniere's disease].

Over 150 years have elapsed since Prosper Meniere's described for the first time the clinical symptoms of the disease that is called by his name at the present time. Nevertheless, the etiology of this pathological condition remains unknown. It has been believed during many decades that the cause of Meniere's disease Is the presence of an excess fluid (hydrops) in the endolymphatic space of the inner ear leading to the rupture of membranes responsible for hearing impairment and vestibular disorders. The recent histopathological studies have demonstrated that endolymphatic hydrops (RH) is not ne

Small Compartment Toxicity: CN VIII and Quality of Life: Hearing Loss, Tinnitus, and Balance Disorders.

Life experiences, industrial/environmental exposures, and administration of Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drugs may have unintended but detrimental effects on peripheral and central auditory pathways. Most relevant to the readership of this journal is the role that drug treatments approved by the FDA as safe and effective appear to interact with 3 independent modes of toxicity within the small compartment of the ear. What may seem to be trivial drug-induced toxicity has the potential to change important measures of quality of life and functional capacity of mid- to late-life pati

Iodine deficiency, thyroid function and hearing deficit: a review.

Iodine deficiency affects an estimated 241 million school-aged children in the world. Little is known about iodine deficiency in relation to auditory function, except for the fact that deaf-mutism is one of the features of cretinism. In the present review, we documented the scientific knowledge on the role of iodine and hypothyroidism in the auditory system. We found that ear development and hearing function depend on thyroid hormones. Multiple pathways are involved in this, including both inner ear morphology as well as neurological processes. Conductive as well as sensorineural hearing loss

The Fischer 344 rat as a model of presbycusis.

Due to the rising number of the aged human population all over the world, presbycusis is a phenomenon that deserves the increasing attention of the medical community as regards to prevention and treatment. This requires finding appropriate animal models for human presbycusis that will be useful in future experiments. Among the available rat strains, the Fischer 344 (F344) strain promises to serve as a model producing prompt and profound presbycusis. Hearing thresholds begin to increase in this strain during the first year of life; toward the end of the second year, the thresholds are very high

Increase in cochlear microphonic potential after toluene administration.

Human and animal studies have shown that toluene can cause hearing loss. In the rat, the outer hair cells are first disrupted by the ototoxicant. Because of their particular sensitivity to toluene, the cochlear microphonic potential (CMP) was used for monitoring the cochlea activity of anesthetized rats exposed to both noise (band noise centered at 4 kHz) and toluene. In the present experiment, the conditions were specifically designed to study the toluene effects on CMP and not those of its metabolites. To this end, 100-microL injections of a vehicle containing different concentrations of sol

Intratympanic treatment of acute acoustic trauma with a cell-permeable JNK ligand: a prospective randomized phase I/II study.

OBJECTIVES: Intratympanic administration of a cell-permeable JNK ligand has been shown to prevent hearing loss after acute acoustic trauma in animal models. CONCLUSIONS: Functional and morphological analysis of the treated ears revealed that AM-111 had an excellent otoprotective effect, even when administered hours after the noise exposure. Blocking the signal pathway with D-JNKI-1 is therefore a promising way to protect the morphological integrity and physiological function of the inner ear in various conditions involving acute sensorineural hearing loss. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: For the first

Pheomelanin as a binding site for drugs and chemicals.

Certain drugs and chemicals, such as chloroquine, chlorpromazine, and 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), are bound to melanin and retained in pigment cells for long periods. This specific retention in pigmented tissues can cause adverse effects in the skin, eye, inner ear, and pigmented nerve cells of the substantia nigra of the brain. To date, all studies have been focused on eu- and neuromelanin. In the present study, we show that chloroquine, chlorpromazine, chlomipramine, paraquat, acridine orange, and nickel, which are bound to eumelanin, also bind to synthetic pheomelan

[Progressive sensorineural hearing loss in childhood].

Prevalence of progressive sensorineural hearing loss in childhood seems to be extremely variable, as percentages reported range from 4 to 30%. Differences in the criteria employed for identifying the deterioration, in the groups of patients, and the age range, could explain this wide range of reported figures. The etiology of the progressive sensorineural hearing loss in infants can be hereditary or acquired. Hereditary causes are divided into syndromic and non-syndromic, whereas the acquired causes include congenital or acquired infection (syphilis, cytomegalovirus, rubella virus and toxoplas

Further evidence for supporting cell conversion in the damaged avian basilar papilla.

Two lines of evidence suggested that a process other than supporting cell divisions may give rise to new hair cells in the bird inner ear injured by either noise or ototoxic drugs. This process, supporting cell conversion, occurs when non-dividing supporting cells transdifferentiate into hair cells. First, noise-exposed chicks received zero, one or two daily i.p. injections of cytosine arabinoside (a DNA synthesis blocker), as well as two daily intraperitoneal injections of bromodeoxyuridine, for four days. Following sacrifice, the papillae were processed for bromodeoxyuridine immunocytochemis

Medical and surgical treatment of Menière's disease.

To create a rational treatment system for Meniere's disease, it is helpful to recall what is known for sure and what is probably true about Meniere's disease, so as to recognise the stages through which the disease passes from beginning to end. Meniere's disease is a complex disorder of the inner ear, characterised by fullness, tinnitus, fluctuant hearing loss and dizzy spells. Meniere's disease is always associated with, and probably caused by endolymphatic hydrops, although all patients with endolymphatic hydrops do not have Meniere's disease. Meniere's disease is almost always associated wi

[Cardiovascular complications in chronic atrophic polychondritis. Apropos of an anatomo-clinical case. Review of the literature].

The case of a man, 25 years of age and presenting with chronic atrophic polychondritis (CAP), complicated by a complete atrioventricular block, double mitral valve incompetence and aneurysm of the ascending aorta, offered the possibility of investigating the various clinical manifestations and cardiovascular complications of this common disorder. CAP is a connectivitis of unknown etiology, it corresponds to ubiquitous and recurrent cartilage inflammation, leading to characteristic chondritis of the ears and nose, joint disease and laryngo-trachco-bronchial disorders.
