A retrospective study of Monteggia fractures in 8 dogs and 1 cat.

Monteggia fractures (MFs) are proximal ulnar fractures with concurrent dislocation of the radial head. This retrospective study aims to report the clinical findings and discuss the treatments and outcomes in MFs cases of 9 cases. Previous medical records of the animals were reviewed for history, clinical features, radiographic findings and choice of treatment. Treatment follow-up was evaluated over the telephone by discussion with the owners. Six animals included in the study were presented 2 days after the initial trauma. Five dogs were presented after common road traffic accidents and two af

Common peroneal nerve injury after tibial plateau fractures: A case series.

INTRODUCTION: Common peroneal nerve (CPN) injury is a rare but significant complication of knee trauma. Given its low incidence, there is limited published evidence, but reports have shown dislocations and fractures associated with varus deformity are more likely to injure the nerve, causing foot drop. This study aims to document the incidence and outcome of CPN palsy in tibial plateau fractures (TPF). METHODS: We reviewed 746 cases of tibial plateau fractures treated between 2011 and 2020. We analysed patients' demographics, injury mechanisms, clinical course, and complications, and identifi

Monolithic Dual Mobility Cup Total Hip Arthroplasty Has High Complication Rates With Surgical Fixation in Elderly With Femur Neck Fracture.

BACKGROUND: This study is prospectively conducted to evaluate surgical complications of monolithic dual mobility cup total hip arthroplasty (THA) in elderly patients with fractured neck of the femur. METHODS: Ninety-seven patients (97 hips) with displaced femoral neck fracture who gave informed consent for participation were prospectively enrolled. Their mean age was 76.6 years (range, 60-95 years), and the mean bone mineral density T-score of neck of the femur was -2.8 (range, -1.2 to -5.5). All patients underwent THA with monolithic dual mobility cup, and computed tomography scans were obta

Cementless Bipolar Hemiarthroplasty for Low-energy Intracapsular Proximal Femoral Fracture in Elderly East-Asian Patients: A Longitudinal 10-year Follow-up Study.

PURPOSE: Short-term outcomes following cemented and cementless hemiarthroplasties (HAs) are reported to be comparable, however, long-term outcomes of cementless HA-especially among Asian patients-is limited. We aimed to assess long-term outcomes in elderly East-Asian patients with intracapsular proximal femoral fractures treated with cementless HA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled 135 patients treated with cementless HA who met our inclusion criteria. We documented bone/implant-related complications (e.g., incidences of revision hip surgery, femoral stem subsidence, dislocation, intraoperat

Finite-Element Syntheses of Callus and Bone Remodeling: Biomechanical Study of Fracture Healing in Long Bones.

Computational simulations of fracture healing are a valuable tool to improve fracture treatment and implants. Several finite-element models have been established to predict callus formation due to mechanobiological rules. This work provides a comprehensive simulation for virtual implantation through the combination of callus simulation and finite-element structural synthesis (FESS) of (re-)modeling during and after healing based on Pauwel's theory of histogenesis and Wolff's law. The simulation is based on a linear elastic material model and includes generation of fracture hematoma and initial

Is the Anterior Approach Safe? Early Complication Rate Associated With 5090 Consecutive Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty Procedures Performed Using the Anterior Approach.

BACKGROUND: Few publications have raised concern with the safety of the anterior approach (AA) to total hip arthroplasty (THA). The purpose of this study is to report the early complications with AA THA in a combined, multicenter patient population from three different institutions. METHODS: The study cohort consisted of 5090 consecutive primary procedures in 4473 patients who had undergone THA utilizing the anterior approach between August 2006 and July 2013. Surgeries were performed by five surgeons at three sites that maintain prospective databases. Preoperative, intraoperative, and postop

Infection in periprosthetic hip fractures.

Fracture around the acetabulum and femur in total hip arthroplasty is a possible complication, sometimes with difficult surgical solution, namely when a sepsis is present. Periprosthetic hip fractures were classified according to a modified Vancouver classification. We treated 112 patients (67 men and 45 women) with periprosthetic hip fractures: 105 femoral fractures (94%) and seven acetabular fractures (6%). Mean follow-up was 10.6 years. For Type A (seven cases - 7%), B1 (10 cases - 10%) or C (13 cases - 12%) fractures around well fixed femoral stems we only fixed the fractures. For Type B2

Return to Play After Hand and Wrist Fractures.

Wrist and hand injuries are common among athletes, and can lead to considerable disability. Dislocations and soft tissue injuries are common and require prompt recognition and treatment. Accurate diagnosis and early immobilization are often key to getting players back to their sport early. Some injuries require surgery; operative intervention allows the player to return to their sport more quickly or with less long-term disability. This article discusses the spectrum of injury from distal radius fractures to mallet fingers, and offers some general guidelines for the surgeon in how to counsel a

A new hypothesis of mechanisms of traumatic ankylosis of temporomandibular joint.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is a disease that severely affects the human health. Although it is well known that trauma is the most common cause of TMJ ankylosis, the mechanisms by which the traumatic TMJ ankylosis develops are unclear. The existing hypothesis is not convincing in explaining the genesis of traumatic TMJ ankylosis. We make a hypothesis that the distraction osteogenesis (DO) of the lateral pterygoid muscle combining with the dislocated and damaged disc is an important factor in genesis of traumatic TMJ ankylosis. If this hypothesis is verified, it will be helpful for

Management of incus dislocation by physiological repositioning of the incus.

Data have been collected prospectively from 11 patients (12 affected ears) with traumatic disruption of the ossicular chain. Isolated dislocation of the incus is the most common finding in our cases, but two had stapes arch features and two had fractures of the tympanic bone. The most common cause of the injuries was a road traffic accident. We describe a technique designed to reposition the incus in its physiological position. This involves a combination of a tympanotomy and a posterior approach to the attic region. The results in five patients (six ears) treated in this way are presented.

Salvage of limbs with vascular trauma.

In an eight-year period we treated 51 cases of vascular injury associated with fractures and/or dislocations or soft-tissue injuries of the limbs. We relied on a clinical diagnosis and immediate exploration of blood vessels rather than the time-consuming procedure of arteriography. All patients were operated on by the orthopaedic residents on duty and not by vascular surgeons. Only 17 (33%) were repaired within six hours of injury. Limb viability with good function was obtained in 38. Complications included six deaths, four amputations, two renal failures and delayed occlusion in one case.

Diencephalic syndrome following cervical spinal cord trauma.

The authors discuss about five cases of diabetes insipidus observed in patients affected by traumatic cervical spine fractures and/or dislocations, without either evident lesions of the cerebral structures at CT scan examination, or important craniocerebral trauma. In all patients polyuria and hyperthermia arose some days after the traumatic accident and regressed spontaneously or after exogeneous vasopressin administration. Vasopressin urinary levels confirmed the presence of a true diabetes insipidus, the origin of which is in largely obscure. A central medullary vasopressin mediated pathway

Multiple carpometacarpal dislocations. A review of four cases.

The cases of four patients with carpometacarpal fracture-dislocations of the ulnar four joints are reported, in all of whom there was extensive additional trauma. Open reduction was necessary in three patients, and only one was treated successfully by a closed reduction. He then had persistent but painless subluxation of the metacarpal bases. On end-result evaluation, two of the other three patients had occasional discomfort and diminished grip strength. One patient had a diminished range of motion of the wrist joint at one-year follow-up, and one patient had narrowing and sclerosis of the car

Does ligamentotaxis reduce the risk of avascular necrosis of the talus after lateral subtalar dislocation.

Lateral subtalar dislocations are rare and severe injuries caused by high-energy trauma, and they require urgent treatment. We reported two cases of lateral subtalar dislocation, which were treated with different methods. In case of open lateral subtalar dislocation, we used the method of distractional external fixation; the final outcome was good, without avascular necrosis of the talus. The case of closed subtalar dislocation has been treated with open reduction and K-wires fixation. The final outcome was poor, with avascular necrosis of the talus. Our opinion is that ligamentotaxis of the a

The relationship between enophthalmos, linear displacement, and volume change in experimentally recreated orbital fractures.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation was to establish the relationship between enophthalmos, linear displacement, and volume change for various patterns of experimentally recreated orbital fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We fabricated an experimental apparatus that permitted uniform displacement of simulated orbital wall fractures. Measurements of linear displacement, volume change, and degree of simulated enophthalmos were taken for 1- and 2-walled displacements. Means and standard deviations were derived, and analysis of variance was used to compare means for statistically significa
