Knowledge, Attitudes, and Perceptions Associated With Antimicrobial Stewardship Among Veterinary Students: A Multi-Country Survey From Nigeria, South Africa, and Sudan.

In African countries, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) issue remains pertinent. Despite this, little efforts have been made to assess the future veterinary prescribers on their knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) related to antimicrobial usage. This multi-country survey attempts to explore the KAP of future veterinarians on stewardship of antimicrobial and identify knowledge gaps. Eight veterinary schools participated from Nigeria, Sudan and South Africa. Data regarding perceptions and knowledge were analyzed using Chi-square χ2 test, Spearman's (Rho) Rank order correlation and factor analy

First-hand knowledge about snakes and snake-bite management: an urgent need.

Snake-bite is a well-known but fairly ignored medical problem in India. Lack of precise first aid knowledge for snake-bite is a substantial reason for its severe fatality in human beings. The present study is comprised of a pilot survey that assesses and evaluates the knowledge of people of different occupations (teachers, students, farmers, medical residents, and miscellaneous) about snakes and snake-bite management. The pilot survey was conducted through a well-structured open-ended questionnaire about experiences with snakes and snake-bites and first aid measures for accidental snake-bites.

Lymphoedema is a long-term chronic condition that results from lymphatic insufficiency and may cause skin changes, which can cause discomfort and impact patient' quality of life. The four cornerstones of lymphoedema management are exercise, lymphatic massage, compression and skin care. This article critically examines self-management in lymphoedema focusing on skin care. Patients may initially demonstrate enthusiasm to undertake the required skin care independently. However, psychosocial factors, such as financial burden and physical restraints, can affect motivation and behaviours over time.

The attitudes of homeless women in London towards contraception.

AIM: To gain a clearer understanding of the attitudes of homeless women towards contraception in central London. BACKGROUND: Homeless women are more vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies. This makes it imperative to address the health needs of this population. Evidence regarding the obstacles homeless women face when using contraception and accessing sexual/reproductive care is sparse, and almost non-existent in the United Kingdom (UK). American research has identified past experiences of women suffering side effects and their fear of serious health risks as d

Knowledge, perceptions and experiences of trachoma among Maasai in Tanzania: Implications for prevention and control.

BACKGROUND: The Alliance for the Global Elimination of Trachoma has set the target for eliminating trachoma as a public health problem by 2020. However, challenges remain, including socio-cultural issues. Districts in Northern Tanzania, predominantly inhabited by the Maasai ethnic group, remain endemic for trachoma. We explored socio-cultural factors that may impact the elimination of trachoma. METHODS/FINDINGS: This study was nested within a larger ethnographic study of trachoma among Maasai in Northern Tanzania. We used stratified random sampling and semi-structured interviews to examine kn

Awareness and Preventative Behaviours Regarding Toxoplasma, Listeria and Cytomegalovirus Among Pregnant Women.

Aim Infection with toxoplasma, listeria and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections can negatively affect pregnancy outcomes. Awareness of these infections, knowledge of preventive practices and pertinent behaviours was assessed. Methods A survey of patients at antenatal clinics in a Dublin maternity hospital was conducted over a six month period. Analysis was undertaken using SPSS. Results The response rate was 36% (287/800). One in two respondents were aware of toxoplasma, one in four of Listeria but only 1 in 10 of CMV. Overall, knowledge was highest among older, more educated pregnant women. Nati

Control of norovirus infection.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of the review is to provide an update on control measures for norovirus (NoV), which is the most commonly implicated pathogen in acute gastroenteritis and outbreaks, causing major disruption in nurseries, schools, hospitals and care homes. RECENT FINDINGS: Important developments include the discovery that virus particles, previously considered to be the infectious unit, also occur in clusters, which appear to be more virulent than individual virus particles; a working culture system using human stem-cell derived enteroids; promising results from early phase clin

Asbestos knowledge and awareness level in central part of Anatolia.

Background Asbestos-contaminated soil has been used by people for many years in the rural part of Anatolia. However, there is no program to control usage of asbestos in this region. Objective To determine the knowledge and awareness level about asbestos in a region where asbestos-related diseases are endemic due to environmental exposure to asbestos in the rural setting. Methods This study included 760 participants, recruited using non-probability sampling, who were classified into four groups according to residence and asbestos exposure type (urban, rural; asbestos-exposed, asbestos-unexposed

Knowing and telling: how African-Australians living with chronic hepatitis B understand hepatocellular carcinoma risk and surveillance.

African-Australians have a high prevalence of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and an increased risk of liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma, HCC) at a younger age than other affected groups living with CHB. The prevention of HCC-related mortality is possible with timely diagnosis of CHB, regular monitoring including liver cancer surveillance and appropriate treatment with antiviral therapy. Currently, little is known about how African-Australians living with CHB understand their condition, their risk of liver cancer and the need for regular monitoring. There were 19 semi-structured interviews cond

Hypoglycaemia unawareness in patients with type 1 diabetes.

Hypoglycaemia unawareness, defined at the onset of neuroglycopenia before the appearance of autonomic warning symptoms, is an serious problem in type 1 diabetes mellitus. It is often caused by recurrent or severe hypoglycaemia, which leads to the failure of the autonomic nervous system (hypoglycaemia-associated autonomic failure - HAAF). The hypoglycaemia awareness can be restored by avoiding episodes of hypoglycaemia. Management of hypoglycaemia unawareness is complex, and can only be achieved by a multifactorial intervention of clinical care and structured patient education. In patients in w

Expectancy Modulation of Opioid Neurotransmission.

Expectancies are powerful modulators of cognitive and emotional experiences, as well as the neurobiological responses linked to these processes. In medicine, placebo effects are a clear example of how expectancies activate opioid neurotransmission in a treatment context, leading to the experience of analgesia and the improvement of emotional states, among other symptoms. Molecular neuroimaging techniques using positron emission tomography (PET) and the selective μ-opioid receptor tracer [11C]carfentanil have significantly contributed to our understanding of the neurobiological systems involved
