Effects of iron and multimicronutrient supplementation on geophagy: a two-by-two factorial study among Zambian schoolchildren in Lusaka.

Geophagy has been associated with iron deficiency and anaemia, but no causal relationship has been established. To clarify this, we conducted a two-by-two factorial randomised, controlled trial on the effect of iron and multimicronutrient supplementation on geophagy in Zambian schoolchildren in Lusaka, from February to December 2001. Of the 406 children, 212 (52.2%) were girls and the mean (range) age was 10.2 (7-15) years. Geophagy was reported by 302 (74.4%) and more often in girls than in boys (80.2 vs. 67.7%, P = 0.007). The mean (range) daily earth intake was 25.2 (1-200) g. Geophageous c

A review of iron studies in overweight and obese children and adolescents: a double burden in the young?

INTRODUCTION: The connection between iron and excessive adiposity has received much research interest. Although children and adolescents have unique developmental phases and nutritional demands, to date, reviews of iron in the overweight (OW) and obese (OB) have combined studies of children and adults or have focussed on adults. PURPOSE: The aim of this review was to critically evaluate studies of the relationship between iron and OW and obesity in children and adolescents, with emphasis on iron status, oral iron response, dietary intake and systemic inflammatory markers. METHODS: A PubMed s

Do all the patients with vitamin B12 deficiency have pernicious anemia?

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 deficiency may result in pernicious anemia (PA). This study evaluated whether all the patients with vitamin B12 deficiency had PA. METHODS: The blood hemoglobin (Hb), iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, and homocysteine concentrations and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) in 90 vitamin B12-deficient patients were measured and compared with the corresponding data in 180 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects. PA was defined by World Health Organization (WHO) as having an Hb concentration <13 g/dl for men and <12 g/dl for women, an MCV ≧ 100 fl, a serum vitamin B12 level <

An evaluation of ferric derisomaltose as a treatment for anemia.

Introduction: Originally approved in Europe in 2009, ferric derisomaltose is the most recently authorized intravenous iron compound in the United States of America (2020). Ferric derisomaltose given as a rapid high-dose infusion can allow complete iron repletion in a single dose and it is now widely used in the treatment of iron deficiency. Areas covered: The chemistry, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of ferric derisomaltose are reviewed. Results from phase II, III and IV trials regarding efficacy and safety are presented. Mechanisms behind minor infusion reactions, hypersensitivity and

High levels of zinc-protoporphyrin identify iron metabolic abnormalities in pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Iron homeostasis influences the development of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) associated with hypoxia or hematologic disorders. To investigate whether severity of idiopathic PAH (IPAH) is impacted by alterations in iron metabolism, we assessed iron metabolic markers, including levels of zinc-protoporphyrin (Zn-pp), transferrin receptor, and red blood cell numbers and morphology in IPAH, associated PAH and sleep apnea-induced pulmonary hypertension patients in comparison to healthy controls and asthmatics. Despite similarly normal measures of iron metabolism, Zn-pp levels in IPAH and sle

[Hypophosphatemia following the administration of intravenous iron formulations: A case report and literature review].

Iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia are common medical conditions. Management of the etiology and iron supplementation are both necessary to treat this condition. Use of intravenous iron preparations is increasing due to its advantages over oral iron. Indeed, the total dose required can be provided in a single infusion, and it is more effective and increases hemoglobin levels more quickly than oral iron. Hypophosphatemia, sometimes severe, following intravenous iron administration, has been described in literature these past years, in particular with ferric carboxymaltose. We report her

Erythroferrone contributes to recovery from anemia of inflammation.

Erythroferrone (ERFE) is an erythropoiesis-driven regulator of iron homeostasis. ERFE mediates the suppression of the iron-regulatory hormone hepcidin to increase iron absorption and mobilization of iron from stores. We examined the role of ERFE in the recovery from anemia of inflammation (AI) induced by injection of heat-killed Brucella abortus. B abortus-treated wild-type mice developed a moderate anemia and reached nadir hemoglobin 14 days after injection and partially recovered by 28 days. We observed that Erfe expression in the bone marrow and the spleen was greatly increased during anemi

Immunological measurement of transferrin compared with chemical measurement of total iron-binding capacity.

Because of uncertainty as to the molecular weight of transferrin, a previous comparison [Von der Heul et al., Clin. Chim. Acta 38, 347 (1972)] between transferrin content of serum and total iron-binding capacity cannot be definitive. We found a conversion factor for expressing the maximum amount of iron bound by 1 mg of transferrin. We compared the resulting calculated value with values obtained by three other methods for measuring total iron-binding capacity. We agree with the previous observation that the latter, as measured radioisotopically, give higher results than would be judged from th

Hepcidin and disorders of iron metabolism.

The hepatic peptide hormone hepcidin is the principal regulator of iron absorption and its tissue distribution. Pathologically increased hepcidin concentrations cause or contribute to iron-restrictive anemias including anemias associated with inflammation, chronic kidney disease and some cancers. Hepcidin deficiency results in iron overload in hereditary hemochromatosis and ineffective erythropoiesis. The hepcidin-ferroportin axis is the principal regulator of extracellular iron homeostasis in health and disease, and is a promising target for the diagnosis and treatment of iron disorders and a

Prevalence and etiology of acquired anemia in Medieval York, England.

This paper presents three distinct models for the development of acquired anemia: iron-deficiency anemia produced by the inadequate intake and/or absorption of iron, the anemia of chronic disease (ACD) caused by the body's natural iron-withholding defense against microbial invaders, and megaloblastic anemia caused by insufficient intake and/or absorption of vitamin B(12) or folic acid. These etiological models are used to interpret the distribution and etiology of anemia among adult individuals interred at the Medieval Gilbertine Priory of St. Andrew, Fishergate, York (n = 147). This bioarchae

Aquatic high iron induces hepatic ferroptosis in zebrafish (Danio rerio) via interleukin-22 signaling pathway.

Iron is one of the indispensable trace elements in living organisms. However, excessive iron deposition in organisms is prone to induce dysfunction of the liver and other vital organs. The present study aimed to investigate the mechanism how aquatic high iron affects iron transport and induces hepatic injury in zebrafish. Our results showed that the iron levels in zebrafish liver and serum were significantly increased after the fish treated with aquatic high iron (200 mg/L ferric ammonium citrate, FAC) for 21 days. Meanwhile, hepatic fibrosis was observed in zebrafish with high iron treatment.

Iron bioaccessibility assessment and bioaccumulation enrichment in microalgae under different production conditions.

Iron-deficiency anemia is a major global health issue impacting approximately 1 billion people worldwide. Microalgae are sustainable and iron-rich resources; however, comprehensive studies on the bioaccessibility and bioaccumulation of microalgae-derived iron are limited. This study assessed these factors using three different microalgae species (Arthrospira platensis, Galdieria sulphuraria, and Chlorella vulgaris) grown under autotrophic, heterotrophic, and mixotrophic conditions using both standard (all modes) and iron-enriched media (autotrophic mode only). With the standard medium, the hig

Improvement of in vivo iron bioavailability using mung bean peptide-ferrous chelate.

There is an increasing amount of research into the development of a third generation of iron supplementation using peptide-iron chelates. Peptides isolated from mung bean were chelated with ferrous iron (MBP-Fe) and tested as a supplement in mice suffering from iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). Mice were randomly divided into seven groups: a group fed the normal diet, the IDA model group, and IDA groups treated with inorganic iron (FeSO4), organic iron (ferrous bisglycinate, Gly-Fe), low-dose MBP-Fe(L-MBP-Fe), high-dose MBP-Fe(H-MBP-Fe), and MBP mixed with FeSO4 (MBP/Fe). Inadequate Status of Multiple B Vitamins is Common Among Women in Oromia Region, Ethiopia.

The true burden of micronutrient deficiencies among women of reproductive age (WRA) in many resource-limited settings is likely underestimated, as data on several "neglected micronutrients" remain sparse. We used data from a cross-sectional survey of 100 nonpregnant WRA in the region of Oromia, Ethiopia to describe the prevalence of various micronutrient deficiencies and other indicators of nutritional status. The prevalences of anemia (hemoglobin < 13.4 g/dL, adjusted for altitude) and iron deficiency (inflammation-adjusted serum ferritin < 15 ug/L) were 7.1% and 4.0%, respectively. However,

Elevated vitamin E content improves all-trans β-carotene accumulation and stability in biofortified sorghum.

Micronutrient deficiencies are common in locales where people must rely upon sorghum as their staple diet. Sorghum grain is seriously deficient in provitamin A (β-carotene) and in the bioavailability of iron and zinc. Biofortification is a process to improve crops for one or more micronutrient deficiencies. We have developed sorghum with increased β-carotene accumulation that will alleviate vitamin A deficiency among people who rely on sorghum as their dietary staple. However, subsequent β-carotene instability during storage negatively affects the full utilization of this essential micronutrie

Scientific research: essential, but is it enough to combat world food insecurities?

Food and nutrition insecurity, which affects an estimated 815 million households (the majority in developing countries), is in large part due to micronutrient deficiencies. The magnitude of the problem, causes, consequences and cost-effective solutions elucidated by scientists over the last few decades changed perceptions and drew political commitments in the 1990s to alleviate micronutrient deficiencies. Prevalence was reduced for iodine and vitamin A deficiency disorders largely through mandated universal fortification of salt with iodine and wide distribution of vitamin A supplements associ

The hypochromic anemias.

Hypochromic anemia is the commonest type of anemia encountered in family practice. Although iron deficiency is by far the most common cause, it cannot be readily distinguished from hypochromic anemia due to other causes (thalassemia, secondary anemia and sideroblastic anemia) without knowing the state of the tissue iron stores. Treatment with iron should not be commenced until this is known. To establish the reason for the hypochromic state, the following tests are suggested: serum ferritin, bone marrow assessment of iron stores, plus serum iron and iron binding capacity.
