A retrospective analysis was made of the data on 60 patients with stage T1 glottic carcinoma (43 T1a, 17 T1b) who received radiation therapy and 17 patients with T1a disease who underwent laser excision as the primary treatment modality. Patients who received radiation therapy achieved 3- and 5-year actuarial local control rates of 92% and 89% for T1a and 77% and 77% for T1b disease, respectively. Five patients with aphakia, glaucoma, and chronic inflammation were treated with ab interno sclerostomy by using the continuous wave Nd:YAG laser focused through a sapphire probe. After a follow-up period of 24 to 28 months, three of five patients had good intraocular pressure control. The sclerostomy failed in one patient when it was occluded by vitreous. The second failure was attributed to closure of the sclerostomy because of chronic intraocular inflammation.

This paper reports results of clinical and experimental studies which sought to validate endonasal laser treatment for prevention of dysfunctional labor in late toxemia. Electrophysiologic and histochemical studies showed stimulating effects of the helium-neon laser treatment on function of large cell hypothalamic nuclei and uterine contractility. Clinical efficiency of this treatment was seen as a lower incidence of dysfunctional labor and cesarean section.

We applied Nd:YAG laser photodisruption to vitreous traction in three patients with avulsed retinal vessel syndrome. In every case the vitreous traction on the avulsed vessels was relieved and the vessel that had been avulsed in the vitreous cavity returned to the retinal surface postoperatively. There were no serious intraoperative and postoperative complications, nor was there any evidence of recurrence of vitreous hemorrhage after the treatment.

Clinical observations on therapeutic laser applications in treatment of the selected chronic illnesses of the oral cavity have been presented by the authors in the paper. Obtaining satisfactory results in most of the patients treated seems to confirm laser-therapy usefulness in stomatology as well. Fast regression of the pathological changes during treatment of chronically recurrent aphthae and simplex herpes as well as diminution in sufferings in most patients with trigeminal neuralgia just after single irradiation are worthy of particular notice.

A retrospective study of 1,000 cases that had Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy after cataract surgery is presented. We analyzed the correlation of the patient's age, axial length of the eye, method of cataract surgery, and laser parameters (exposures, energy, and burst mode) with the incidence of retinal detachment (1.6% overall). There is substantial evidence that prostaglandins (PG's) mediate acute elevations of intraocular pressure (IOP) due to laser irradiation of the iris. In the present study, we determined the optimal laser parameters needed to produce the maximal rise in IOP in anesthetized rabbits. Application of argon laser (0.75 watts, 0.5 sec. duration, and 8 spots of 500 micron size) to the iris of pigmented rabbits elicited an acute rise in IOP and miosis accompanied by an increase in aqueous protein concentration. The CO2-lasers of the new generation are equipped with milliwatts, super-pulse, small spot size (700 U or less). These technical improvements safe permit in resection of vocal fold benign lesions like polyps, nodules, or even sulcus glottidis. Our resection technique for sulcus glottidis and epidermoïd cysts is presented in 18 cases. If very strict rules of microsurgical treatment are respected, the functional results are as good as those with conventional techniques (93% of good results).
