Mice selected for high versus low stress reactivity: a new animal model for affective disorders.

Affective disorders such as major depression are among the most prevalent and costly diseases of the central nervous system, but the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. In recent years, it has become evident that alterations of the stress hormone system, in particular dysfunctions (hyper- or hypo-activity) of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, play a prominent role in the development of major depressive disorders. Therefore, we aimed to generate a new animal model comprising these neuroendocrine core symptoms in order to unravel parameters underlying increased or dec

Emotional memory is perceptual.

In two experiments it was investigated which aspects of memory are influenced by emotion. Using a framework proposed by Roediger (American Psychologist 45 (1990) 1043-1056), two dimensions relevant for memory were distinguished the implicit-explicit distinction, and the perceptual versus conceptual distinction. In week 1, subjects viewed a series of slides accompanied with a spoken story in either of the two versions, a neutral version, or a version with an emotional mid-phase. In week 2, memory performance for the slides and story was assessed unexpectedly. A free recall test revealed superio

The coming of age of self-mutilation.

Self-mutilation (SM), the deliberate, nonsuicidal destruction of one's own body tissue, occurs in such culturally sanctioned practices as tattooing; body piercing; and healing, spiritual, and order-preserving rituals. As a symptom, it has typically been regarded as a manifestation of borderline behavior and misidentified as a suicide attempt. It has begun to attract mainstream media attention, and many more who suffer from it are expected to seek treatment. This review suggests that SM can best be understood as a morbid self-help effort providing rapid but temporary relief from feelings of dep

Deformed probability estimation in the goal-directed reinforcement learning model explains anxious-depression dimension of psychiatric disorders.

Psychiatric disorders are complex, multidimensional pathologies rooted in various cognitive processes. Computational psychiatry aims to reveal distortions in these processes through behavior modeling, providing a deeper understanding of psychiatric disorders. Previous studies that used Daw's two-stage task linked imbalances between habitual/model-free and goal-directed/model-based behaviors to disorders featuring compulsive behaviors and intrusive thoughts. The model-based part depends on estimating environmental probabilities. To improve this, we incorporated a well-known distortion in subjec

Beyond Cause or Consequence: Intolerance of Uncertainty and Internalizing Symptoms in a Reciprocal Developmental Process During Adolescence.

Intolerance of uncertainty is consistently associated with adolescent internalizing symptoms, yet it remains unclear whether it functions primarily as a developmental precursor, a consequence, or part of a reciprocal process. A total of 3562 adolescents (Mage at T1 = 14.27 years, SD = 1.93; 55.4% girls) took part in this three-wave longitudinal study. Competing longitudinal measurement models were first evaluated, after which cross-lagged panel models and random-intercept cross-lagged panel models were used to determine whether the associations reflected stable between-person differences, with

The impact of empowering motivational climate in physical education on secondary school students' life skills: a self-system model of motivational development.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents play a crucial role in societal advancement, and fostering their development is a global priority. The Positive Youth Development (PYD) framework emphasizes strength-based approaches, highlighting life skills such as teamwork, goal setting, and problem-solving. Physical education (PE) serves as an effective platform for cultivating these skills. While extensive research has explored sports’ role in life skills development across various regions, studies in Chinese-speaking contexts remain limited. Cultural and linguistic factors may influence psychological mechanisms un

An Intelligent LLM-Based Mental Coping Detection Framework.

Social media-based Mental Health (MH) informatics often focuses on disorder detection, overlooking psychological aspects like coping mechanisms and stressors. Furthermore, user-generated texts, although contains MH signals at scale, lack clinical validation. This paper presents a two-stage framework for mental coping detection that combines a coping strategy classifier and a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system. The coping classifier identifies coping strategies from user text, while the RAG generates responses grounded in expert-validated knowledge bases and the coping labels. A pilot

Place attachment, perceived displacement, and tourism support intentions: A dual-mediation model with length of residency as a moderator.

Guided by the Cognition-Affect-Behavior (CAB) model of attitudes, this study examines how place attachment (PA) is associated with residents' behavioral intention to support tourism development (BISTD) through two distinct affective pathways: perceived direct displacement (PDD) and perceived indirect displacement (PID). We focus on a gentrifying historic district in Haikou, China, and analyze survey data from 694 residents using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Results show that PA is positively associated with both PDD and PID. In turn, PDD is positively associate

Opioidergic modulation of stress-induced hyperalgesia in adult zebrafish.

Depression and pain share overlapping central neurobiological pathways that represent key pharmacological targets in neuropsychiatric and pain research. However, the neuropharmacological mechanisms by which unpredictable chronic stress (UCS) modulates nociception in translational vertebrate models remains poorly understood. Here, we characterized a zebrafish model of stress-induced sensitization to a visceral chemical challenge by exposing adult fish to a 7- or 14-day UCS protocol (UCS7/UCS14) followed by intraperitoneal acetic acid (AA) injection (1.0-5.0% v/v). In unstressed fish, AA at 1.0%

Divergent neurobehavioral signatures of anxiety and depression: a multilevel comparative analysis in adult zebrafish.

BACKGROUND: Stress-related psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression require robust preclinical models for mechanistic exploration. In this study, we utilized adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) to investigate behavioral, molecular, and metabolic differences between anxiety- and depression-like states. METHODS: Anxiety was modeled using acute predator exposure, whereas depression was induced via a 21-day chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) protocol. Evaluations included behavioral assays, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, untargeted metabolomic profiling, and gene expression analyses.

The three circle model of compassion focused therapy: An experimental paradigm to assess dynamic psychophysiological changes of emotion regulation systems.

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is an integrated, evolutionary-informed biopsychosocial therapy model. Several systematic reviews and meta-analyses of CFT indicate that it is effective for a range of different clinical and non-clinical populations to improve overall mental health and wellbeing. Central to CFT is the tripartite model of emotion regulation, consisting of threat, drive, and soothing systems. The digital Three Circles Scale (d3CS), a novel measure of the tripartite model, has been validated with adults and teenagers, however, its link to physiological changes in controlled experi

The lived experience of social anxiety disorder: A conceptual model focused on adolescents and young adults based on published literature and social media listening.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) affects up to 1 in 8 individuals over their lifetime and is characterized by an intense fear of social situations involving unfamiliar people or possible scrutiny. This retrospective observational study reviewed published literature from PubMed and analyzed data from Reddit using social media listening (SML) to understand the lived experience of individuals with SAD. SML offers a complement to traditional methods such as semi-structured interviews, particularly for individuals for whom interacting with strangers is challenging. A stepwise analysis, aligned with US

Examining Pubertal and Cognitive Differences in Adolescent Depressive Symptoms Using Drift Diffusion Modeling.

Risk for depression increases during adolescence, reflecting a constellation of cascading interactions between affective, biological, and cognitive factors. Drift diffusion modeling (DDM) can clarify the cognitive mechanisms underlying risk for depression by decomposing cognitive task performance into latent components, such as drift rate, boundary separation, and non-decision time. However, limited research has applied DDM to adolescent depression or examined whether these cognitive processes interact with pubertal timing, a key biological risk factor. Participants were 103 racially/ethnicall

Prefrontal cortex temporally multiplexes slow and fast dynamics in value learning and memory.

Balancing stability and flexibility is a fundamental challenge in value-based learning: how does the brain maintain long-term value memories while adapting to new environmental contingencies? To address this, we propose a reinforcement learning model composed of two distinct processes with fast and slow dynamics for updating and forgetting object values. Using a combined theoretical and experimental approach in male macaque monkeys, we validate a key behavioral prediction of this two-rate system-spontaneous recovery of prior value memories following value reversal. At the neural level, we show

Ferulic acid protects against stress-induced myocardial injury in mice.

Excessive stress is a known contributor to cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and ferulic acid (FA), a natural phenolic compound, has demonstrated significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study investigates the protective effects of FA against stress-induced myocardial injury (SIMI) and elucidates the underlying mechanisms. An acute SIMI model was established in mice using low-temperature water immersion restraint. Cardiac function was assessed via cardiac index and histopathological analysis. Serum levels of corticosterone (CORT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and brain natri

Contemporary in vivo rodent electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) models in translational depression research: a systematic review.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been established as an efficacious and safe treatment for severe and/or treatment-resistant depression. However, despite decades of research, the exact biological signature of the mechanism of action of ECT has yet to be elucidated. As a translational tool, electroconvulsive stimulation (ECS), the preclinical rodent equivalent of ECT, offers the unique opportunity for further knowledge under controlled laboratory conditions. Here, for the first time, a systematic review following the PRISMA 2020 statement is presented, covering mouse and rat studies investig

Improving treatments for mental disorders using computational models.

Progress in the treatment of psychopathology has slowed and much remains unknown about how treatments achieve their beneficial effects. We propose that computational models can be used to provide new insights into how treatments may work and how they may be improved. We argue that treatments can be understood as interventions on systems of interacting components, and that computational models are needed if we are to accurately and precisely determine the effect an intervention will have on this system. We demonstrate this approach by using a computational model of panic disorder to conduct an

The Role of Diagnostic Models in Prejudice Toward People With Borderline Personality Disorder: An Experimental Investigation.

We tested whether dimensional personality disorder models such as the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) cause less prejudice toward people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) than categorical models, and we sought to identify the mechanisms underpinning this reduction in prejudice. Undergraduate psychology students (n = 183) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions (AMPD, categorical, control) and given descriptive information about BPD. Participants in the AMPD and categorical conditions also received a presentation about their respective BPD diagnostic criter

The attentive reconstruction of objects facilitates robust object recognition.

Humans are extremely robust in our ability to perceive and recognize objects-we see faces in tea stains and can recognize friends on dark streets. Yet, neurocomputational models of primate object recognition have focused on the initial feed-forward pass of processing through the ventral stream and less on the top-down feedback that likely underlies robust object perception and recognition. Aligned with the generative approach, we propose that the visual system actively facilitates recognition by reconstructing the object hypothesized to be in the image. Top-down attention then uses this recons

The Effects of Early-Life Stress on Liver Transcriptomics and the Protective Role of EPA in a Mouse Model of Early-Life-Stress-Induced Adolescent Depression.

Early-life stress (ELS) was found to increase the risk of adolescent depression, and clinical evidence indicated that eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) was decreased in patients with adolescent depression, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Here, we utilized an ELS model of maternal separation with early weaning to explore the protective role of EPA in adolescent depression. We found that that ELS induced depression-like behavior rather than anxiety-like behavior in adolescent mice. RNA-sequencing results showed that ELS changed the transcription pattern in the liver, including 863 upregulat
