Dynamic reconfiguration and transition of whole-brain networks in patients with MELAS revealed by a hidden Markov model.

OBJECTIVES: Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy with lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) is a rare maternally inherited disease. The neuropathologic mechanisms and neural network alterations underlying stroke-like episodes (SLEs), a recurrent paroxysmal clinical event, remain unclear. The hidden Markov model (HMM) can detect profound alterations in neural activities across the whole-brain network. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We initially collected data from a prospective cohort from 2019 to 2024. The confirmed diagnosis of MELAS was conducted through genetic testing or a muscle biopsy. He

Atypical Use of Visuospatial Context in Psychotic Psychopathology: A Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Visual perception in people with psychotic disorders is thought to be minimally influenced by surrounding visual elements (ie, visuospatial context). Visuospatial context paradigms have the unique potential to clarify the neural bases of psychotic disorders because the neural mechanisms are well studied in both animal and human models. However, the published literature on the subject is conflicting and heterogeneous. A systematic consolidation and evaluation of the published evidence is needed. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a meta-analysis of 54 articles spanning over

Shared Mechanisms and Integrated Management of Post-Stroke Pain and Depression: A Comprehensive Review.

Post-stroke pain (PSP) and post-stroke depression (PSD) represent two major neuropsychiatric complications that frequently co-occur, with comorbidity rates ranging from 34 to 65.6%. Despite their high prevalence and profound impact on functional recovery and quality of life, the shared mechanisms and optimal management of this complex comorbidity remain poorly understood. We conducted a systematic review of clinical and preclinical evidence to explore the epidemiological characteristics, diagnostic challenges, neurobiological underpinnings, and therapeutic strategies for comorbid PSP and PSD.

Serum Prolidase and Ischemia-Modified Albumin Levels in Neural Tube Defects: A Comparative Study of Myelomeningocele, Meningocele, and Myeloschisis.

BACKGROUND Neural tube defects (NTDs) are congenital malformations resulting from incomplete neural tube closure, leading to severe neurological impairments. Despite advances in prenatal screening and surgical interventions, the biochemical mechanisms underlying NTDs remain unclear. Prolidase, an enzyme involved in collagen metabolism, and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), a marker of oxidative stress, may play roles in NTD pathogenesis. This study aimed to compare serum prolidase and IMA levels in infants with NTDs and healthy controls to assess their potential contribution to NTD development.

Frontal cortex hyperactivation and gamma desynchrony in Fragile X syndrome: Correlates of auditory hypersensitivity.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is an X-linked disorder that often leads to intellectual disability, anxiety, and sensory hypersensitivity. While sound sensitivity (hyperacusis) is a distressing symptom in FXS, its neural basis is not well understood. It is postulated that hyperacusis may stem from temporal lobe hyperexcitability or dysregulation in top-down modulation. Studying the neural mechanisms underlying sound sensitivity in FXS using scalp electroencephalography (EEG) is challenging because the temporal and frontal regions have overlapping neural projections that are difficult to differentiat

MOTC: Abdominal Multi-objective Segmentation Model with Parallel Fusion of Global and Local Information.

Convolutional Neural Networks have been widely applied in medical image segmentation. However, the existence of local inductive bias in convolutional operations restricts the modeling of long-term dependencies. The introduction of Transformer enables the modeling of long-term dependencies and partially eliminates the local inductive bias in convolutional operations, thereby improving the accuracy of tasks such as segmentation and classification. Researchers have proposed various hybrid structures combining Transformer and Convolutional Neural Networks. One strategy is to stack Transformer bloc

The truth is in there: Belief processes in the human brain.

Belief, defined by William James as the mental state or function of cognizing reality, is a core psychological function with strong influence on emotion and behavior. Furthermore, strong and aberrant beliefs about the world and oneself play important roles in mental disorders. The underlying processes of belief have been the matter of a long debate in philosophy and psychology, and modern neuroimaging techniques can provide insight into the underlying neural processes. Here, we conducted a functional magnetic resonance imaging study with N = 30 healthy participants in which we presented statem

Altered intrinsic neural timescales and neurotransmitter activity in males with tobacco use disorder.

Previous researches of tobacco use disorder (TUD) has overlooked the hierarchy of cortical functions and single modality design separated the relationship between macroscopic neuroimaging aberrance and microscopic molecular basis. At present, intrinsic timescale gradient of TUD and its molecular features are not fully understood. Our study recruited 146 male subjects, including 44 heavy smokers, 50 light smokers and 52 non-smokers, then obtained their rs-fMRI data and clinical scales related to smoking. Intrinsic neural timescale (INT) method was performed to describe how long neural informati

Alterations in Neural Activation During Facial Emotion Processing in Adolescent Male Participants With Klinefelter Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is the most common sex-chromosome aneuploidy (47,XXY), affecting 1 in 500 male participants. The phenotype of male participants with KS includes both physical features, such as tall stature and testicular insufficiency, and behavioral alterations, including difficulties in social functioning, anxiety, and depression. Studies examining underlying neural alterations associated with the behavioral phenotype, however, are sparse. We aimed to address this gap in knowledge using functional magnetic resonance imaging in conjunction with an emotion processing parad

Enhancing chronic low back pain management: an initial neuroimaging study of a mobile interoceptive attention training.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic low back pain (cLBP) poses significant challenges, often addressed through avoidance or distraction. Emerging evidence suggests that mind-body interventions, like our novel Mind Your Pain (MyP) smartphone mobile application, may offer relief. We conducted a single-arm, mixed-methods neuroimaging study to assess the degree to which treatment response to our 8-week intervention, as measured by the reduction in the Pain, Enjoyment of Life and General Activity Scale (PEG), was associated with enhanced pain-related insula activation over time. METHODS: Twenty-nine individuals

The brain, rapid eye movement sleep, and major depressive disorder: A multimodal neuroimaging study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence has established the prominent involvement of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep disturbance in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the neural correlates of REM sleep in MDD and their clinical significance are less clear. METHODS: Cross-sectional and longitudinal polysomnography and resting-state functional MRI data were collected from 131 MDD patients and 71 healthy controls to measure REM sleep and voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC). Correlation and mediation analyses were performed to examine the associations between REM sleep, VMHC, and clinical variables.

The Effect of Posterior Fossa Decompression Surgery on Brainstem and Cervical Spinal Cord Dimensions in Adults with Chiari Malformation Type 1.

OBJECTIVE: Posterior fossa decompression (PFD) surgery creates more space at the skull base, reduces the resistance to the cerebrospinal fluid motion, and alters craniocervical biomechanics. In this paper, we retrospectively examined the changes in neural tissue dimensions following PFD surgery on Chiari malformation type 1 adults. METHODS: Measurements were performed on T2-weighted brain magnetic resonance images acquired before and 4 months after surgery. Measurements were conducted for neural tissue volume and spinal cord/brainstem width at 4 different locations; 2 width measurements were

The Modulatory Effects of Atomoxetine on Aberrant Connectivity During Attentional Processing in Cocaine Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine use disorder is associated with cognitive deficits that reflect dysfunctional processing across neural systems. Because there are currently no approved medications, treatment centers provide behavioral interventions that have only short-term efficacy. This suggests that behavioral interventions are not sufficient by themselves to lead to the maintenance of abstinence in patients with cocaine use disorder. Self-control, which includes the regulation of attention, is critical for dealing with many daily challenges that would benefit from medication interventions that can amel

The relationship between brain neural correlates, self-objectification, and interoceptive sensibility.

Interoceptive sensibility refers to the tendency to focus on internal bodily states and the capacity to detect them. As the subjective dimension of interoception, interoceptive sensibility plays a key role in individuals' health. Self-objectification, a process by which individuals tend to adopt a third-person's perspective of their physical self, leads to decreased interoceptive sensibility. However, few studies regarding the neural basis of interoceptive sensibility and the underlying mechanism of the relationship between self-objectification and interoceptive sensibility have been conducted

Hypoxia Induced Sex-Difference in Zebrafish Brain Proteome Profile Reveals the Crucial Role of H3K9me3 in Recovery From Acute Hypoxia.

Understanding the molecular basis of sex differences in neural response to acute hypoxic insult has profound implications for the effective prevention and treatment of ischemic stroke. Global hypoxic-ischemic induced neural damage has been studied recently under well-controlled, non-invasive, reproducible conditions using a zebrafish model. Our earlier report on sex difference in global acute hypoxia-induced neural damage and recovery in zebrafish prompted us to conduct a comprehensive study on the mechanisms underlying the recovery. An omics approach for studying quantitative changes in brain

Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) promotes neurogenesis after hypoxic-ischemic brain damage in neonatal rats.

OBJECTIVE: Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) endangers quality of life in children, and curative attempts are rarely effective. Neurogenesis plays an important role in neural repair following brain damage. This study aimed to investigate the role of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) in neurogenesis after neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD). METHODS: Neonatal HIBD models were established in vivo (Sprague-Dawley rats, 7 days old) and in vitro (cultured neural stem cells, NSCs). Lentivirus and adenovirus transfection was used to induce TERT overexpression. Expression

The Human Hippocampus in Parkinson's Disease: An Integrative Stereological and Proteomic Study.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disease that is pathologically described as a six-stage α-synucleinopathy. In stage 4, α-synuclein reaches the hippocampus, inducing cognitive deficits, from which it progresses to the isocortex, leading to dementia. Among hippocampal fields, cornu ammonis 2 is particularly affected by this α-synucleinopathy and critical for cognitive decline. Volumetric studies using magnetic resonance imaging have produced controversial results, with only some reporting volume loss, whereas stereological data obtained using nonspecific mar
