Utilizing 3D Printing for the Surgical Management of Orbital Floor Fractures.

We present a technique for treating orbital floor fractures using three-dimensional (3D) printing technology and a preoperative template based on the mirror image of the unaffected orbit. Our patient, a 56-year-old man, experienced persistent diplopia in the upward direction and left enophthalmos after previous open reduction internal fixation surgery. To address these complications, we used a simulation of the ideal orbital floor from computed tomography images and used a 3D printer to create a template. Subsequently, an absorbable plate was molded intraoperatively based on this template. Not…

Isolated Orbital Apex Mucocele: A Case Study and Literature Review.

Isolated orbital mucocele without connection between the mass and paranasal sinuses is extremely rare and poorly understood. Literature review of these cases are very few and present more anteriorly in the orbit. Here, the authors present a 33-year-old female with an isolated left orbital apex mucocele without direct communication with the adjacent paranasal sinuses and other vital orbital structures. Endoscopic sinus surgery with marsupialization was performed, and an orbital mucocele was confirmed on histopathology. Although uncommon, previously reported cases, including our patient have rem…

Large orbital masses due to longstanding hydrogel retinal explants.

AIM: To describe the features of orbital masses occurring as a late complication of hydrogel retinal explants. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of patients presenting with orbital masses at decades after retinal surgery. RESULTS: Two patients with huge orbital masses are described, their presenting 25 and 28 years after retinal detachment repair with expansile hydrogel explants. In one case, the preoperative diagnosis was pleomorphic adenoma, and the other-with extreme distortion of the globe-was considered to be lymphoma or chronic inflammation arising around prior retinal explant…

Congenital orbital fibrosis: report of two cases and review of literature.

A 7-year-old male child presented with complaints of lagophthalmos and lid retraction of the right eye since birth. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed diffuse thickening of right superior rectus and levator-palpebrae complex along with a hypointense, irregular, and ill-defined lesion in the adjoining fat abutting the lacrimal gland. Biopsy from the lesion showed diffuse orbital fibrosis. Another 3-year-old female child presented with complaints of her right eye appearing smaller and inability to move the right eye freely since birth. MRI showed thickening of right superior and medial rect…

Sexual dimorphism in synaptic inputs to the mouse amygdala and orbital cortex.

The medial amygdala (MeA) is a sexually dimorphic brain region that regulates fear responses, emotional memories, and social behaviors. It i … inalis, lateral septum, and medial preoptic area. Furthermore, we examined input connections to the orbital cortex (ORB), a brain region shown to be larger in volume in females, and found the opposite trend, where females had more total inputs. Together, our findings extend the evidence for sexual dimorphism in the brain to the neuronal wiring pattern, …

Rapidly progressive orbital intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia in a newborn.

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH), also known as "vegetant intravascular haemangioendothelioma", is a rare benign proliferation of vascular endothelial cells secondary to intravascular thrombosis and thrombus organisation. It can develop from vascular lesions such as haemangiomas, pyogenic granulomas or varicose veins. This vascular tumour of the skin and subcutaneous tissue may exhibit rapid and progressive growth, and is usually located in the neck or head. Ocular presentation is unusual and orbital involvement is even rarer. We report a case of a preterm newborn male wi…

Exact results for the orbital angular momentum of magnons on honeycomb lattices.

We obtain exact results for the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of magnons at the high symmetry points of ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) honeycomb lattices in the presence of Dzyallonshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions. For the FM honeycomb lattice in the absence of DM interactions, the values of the OAM at the corners of the Brillouin zone (BZ) (k1∗=(0,23/9)2π/a,k2∗=(1/3,3/9)2π/a,…) are alternately±3ℏ/16for both magnon bands. The presence of DM interactions dramatically changes those values by breaking the degeneracy of the two magnon bands. The OAM values are alternately3ℏ/8and 0…

Orbital compartment syndrome following tear trough filler injection.

A patient was treated with tear trough filler and developed a retrobulbar haemorrhage. This was managed acutely with a lateral canthotomy and cantholysis with no lasting visual compromise. This is the first reported case of an orbital compartment syndrome following filler injection and highlights the potential blinding complications which can occur. There should be an increased awareness of this complication amongst practitioners administering tear trough filler.

A Rare Case of Bilateral Orbital Metastases From Rectal Adenocarcinoma.

Colorectal carcinoma is among the commonest malignancies in the World. However, metastases from rectal carcinomas to the orbit are extremely rare. Only a few such cases have been reported in the literature till date. We report a case of adenocarcinoma of the rectum in a 27-year-old male with bilateral orbital metastases who is currently undergoing palliative radiotherapy. Our aim is to highlight the role of imaging in the diagnosis and management of orbital metastatic disease.
