Two-dimensional strain as a marker of subclinical anterior ischaemia in anomaly of left coronary artery arising from pulmonary artery.

A 13-year-old boy was admitted to our department after an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest during physical exertion. Transitory ST-segment elevation in the anterior chest leads was noted after defibrillation. At 48 h, initial evaluation was performed. Twelve-lead EKG and telemetry were normal. Transthoracic echocardiography showed normal left ventricle (LV) size and global function. Segmental two-dimensional (2D) longitudinal strain of the anterior wall was significantly decreased when compared with the other segments, and was associated with post-systolic shortening. Coronary angiography and 64

Inventories for male and female sexual dysfunctions.

Several illnesses can distress sexual health and disrupt sexuality, an integral part of being human. These illnesses are not different in origin from those affecting other health areas, but, because sexuality is involved, effective communication and empathy between the physician and the patient may be severely hindered by negative feelings such as anxiety and guilt. A detailed general and sexual history is, however, an essential step in evaluating patients for sexual dysfunction (SD). Finding the correct way to ask questions and to decode answers on sexual health and disease might be difficult

A novel mutation (G217D) in the Presenilin 1 gene ( PSEN1) in a Japanese family: presenile dementia and parkinsonism are associated with cotton wool plaques in the cortex and striatum.

We report a family of Japanese origin that has five individuals from two generations affected by an illness characterized by dementia, a stooped posture and an antiflexion gait with an onset in the fourth or fifth decade of life. Two siblings had a clinical phenotype characterized by dementia and Parkinsonism with stooped posture, rigidity and bradykinesia. Neuropathological alterations in both patients included numerous 'cotton wool' plaques (CWPs), senile plaques, severe amyloid angiopathy, neurofibrillary tangles, neuronal rarefaction and gliosis. CWPs were present throughout the cerebral c

Efficacy of topical herbal oils for knee osteoarthritis: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a chronic joint disease commonly observed in middle-aged and older individuals, significantly impacting their quality of life. Topical herbal oils (THOs) have emerged as a potential alternative therapy for pain management due to their natural origin and accessibility. This systemtic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the efficacy of THOs for alleviating pain in KOA patients. METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science were searched from inception to May 1, 2025. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. Primary ou

Small RNAs, big impact: microRNAs in malaria pathogenesis, therapeutic opportunities, and challenges.

Malaria is one of the world's most critical parasitic diseases; it is caused by Plasmodium species and spreads through Anopheles mosquitoes. The life cycle of Plasmodium species is complex and involves several stages in humans and mosquitoes, each involving distinct molecular interactions. Recent molecular biology research has suggested that host microRNAs (miRNAs) may serve as important regulators of host-parasite interactions during malaria infection. MicroRNAs, approximately 22 nucleotides long, are non-coding RNAs that control gene expression by binding to target mRNAs and either repressin

A Selenium Disulfide-Based Shampoo Is Beneficial for Dandruff Management and Rebalancing the Scalp Microbiome of Subjects of Any Hair Type.

INTRODUCTION: Dandruff is a chronic scalp condition occurring in all hair types. Selenium disulfide (SeS2) shampoo is beneficial in dandruff and rebalances the scalp microbiome. However, data regarding subjects with curly hair are missing. This study assessed the clinical and scalp microbiome benefits of SeS2 shampoo in subjects of any hair type with moderate-to-severe dandruff. METHODS: A 6-week study in adult subjects of any De La Mettrie hair type (I-VIII) assessed total dandruff, SD severity score (SSSD), erythema, hair greasiness, quality of life, discomfort, local tolerance, perceived b

A Primary Spinal Intramedullary Mixed Germ Cell Tumor: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Central nervous system germ cell tumors are rare and account for 2% to 3% of all central nervous system tumors in Japan. Here, we report an extremely rare case of a primary spinal intramedullary mixed germ cell tumor. A 33-year-old man presented with a chief report of dysuria and numbness in the right lower extremity. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass lesion on the left side of the intramedullary spinal cord at the Th10-11 vertebral body level with hyperintensity on T2-weighted images, isointensity on T1-weighted images, and uniform contrast in gadolinium. Cerebrospinal fluid examinat

A case report of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans with osteolytic.

BACKGROUND: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare, low-to-intermediate grade malignant soft tissue sarcoma that is prone to local recurrence after surgery but rarely metastasizes to distant sites. However, in this case, the tumor metastasized to the humerus and presented as a solitary lesion. CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old male patient presented with pain and limited mobility in the left upper limb, with a history of surgery for DFSP in the popliteal fossa. Imaging examinations revealed bone destruction in the proximal humerus and a soft tissue mass, with the lesion measuring 11.

Timing of Intervals Between Utterances in Typically Developing Infants and Infants Later Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Background: Understanding the origin and natural organization of early infant vocalizations is important for predicting communication and language abilities in later years. The very frequent production of speech-like vocalizations (hereafter "protophones"), occurring largely independently of interaction, is part of this developmental process. Objectives: This study aims to investigate the gap durations (time intervals) between protophones, comparing typically developing (TD) infants and infants later diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in a naturalistic setting where endogenous proto

Evaluation and management of dyspnea as the dominant presenting feature in neuromuscular disorders.

Dyspnea is a common symptom in neuromuscular disorders and, although multifactorial, it is usually due to respiratory muscle involvement, associated musculoskeletal changes such as scoliosis or, in certain neuromuscular conditions, cardiomyopathy. Clinical history can elicit symptoms such as orthopnea, trepopnea, sleep disruption, dysphagia, weak cough, and difficulty with secretion clearance. The examination is essential to assist with the diagnosis of an underlying neurologic disorder and determine whether dyspnea is from a cardiac or pulmonary origin. Specific attention should be given to p

Single-cell landscape of peripheral immune response in patients with anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 dermatomyositis.

OBJECTIVE: Anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (Anti-MDA5)-positive DM is a rare but life-threatening autoimmune disorder that is associated with a high risk of developing rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease. Current empirical therapies offer limited benefit in terms of patient survival, as little is known about the aetiology of anti-MDA5 DM. To best understand its immune landscape, we applied single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to peripheral blood samples from DM patients and healthy controls. METHODS: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from eight DM patients

High-grade idiopathic atrioventricular block in childhood: Case report and literature review.

Atrioventricular blocks are chronotropic abnormalities produced by multifactorial alterations in the cardiac innervation system, specifically between the internodal pathways between the sinus node and the atrioventricular node. These bradyarrhythmias represent 2.3% of cardiac alterations in intrauterine life, registering one case for every 20 000 to 25 000 live births. However, its occurrence in childhood and adolescence is unknown. Likewise, the percentage of idiopathic atrioventricular blocks in this group in Colombia is unknown to date. Among the possible etiol-ogies, congenital and acquire

EEG Findings in Infants With Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Presenting With Clinical Seizures.

Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) refers to a constellation of signs occurring in newborn infants who were exposed to opioids or opiates in utero. These manifestations include poor feeding, gastrointestinal disorders, abnormal sleep patterns, and neurological signs such as jitteriness, tremors, and seizures (1, 2). Myoclonus, jitteriness, and tremors often may be interpreted as seizures and therefore treated as epileptic seizures. Objective: To determine whether seizure like activity observed in infants with NAS correlate with electroencephalogram (EEG) findings. Design/ Method: We reviewed t

Parental-reported health anxiety symptoms in 5- to 7-year-old children: the Copenhagen Child Cohort CCC 2000.

OBJECTIVES: Hypochondriasis, now often designated as health anxiety, is important in terms of prevalence, levels of suffering, and health services cost in adults. Whereas the DSM-IV-TR suggests that the condition primarily begins in adulthood, retrospective reports point to a possible origin in childhood with onset as early as preschool age. However, little research has addressed health anxiety in children. In the present study we explored parental-reported health anxiety symptoms (HAS) and their association with physical and mental health in a population-based sample of 5- to 7-year-old child

Dengue virus-induced autoantibodies bind to plasminogen and enhance its activation.

Dengue virus infection can lead to life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) or dengue shock syndrome (DSS) in patients. Abnormal activation of the coagulation and fibrinolysis system is one of the hallmarks associated with DHF/DSS patients. However, the mechanisms that cause pathology in DHF/DSS patients are still unclear. Because conversion of plasminogen (Plg) to plasmin (Plm) is the first step in the activation of fibrinolysis, Abs against Plg found in DHF/DSS patients may be important. Therefore, to investigate the specificity, function, and possible origin of these Abs, we generate

Long-term effects of diabetes during pregnancy on the offspring.

BACKGROUND: Many epidemiological and experimental studies have proven that some adult diseases might have their origin in fetal life. It has been also hypothesized that intra-uterine environment in pregnancy complicated with diabetes might influence the development of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases in the offspring. OBJECTIVES: To assess glucose metabolism, insulin secretion, and prevalence of obesity in the offspring of mothers with pregestational diabetes mellitus (PGDM) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and to evaluate the relationship between maternal metaboli

Early postnatal nutrition determines somatotropic function in mice.

Increasing evidence suggests a developmental origin for a number of human diseases, notably after intrauterine or postnatal nutrient deprivation. Nutritional changes readily translate into alterations of somatic growth. However, whereas intrauterine growth retardation often shows postnatal catch-up growth, recovery from food restriction immediately after birth is limited. Therefore, we investigated whether early postnatal nutrition (undernutrition and overfeeding) modifies plasticity of growth through developmental control of the somatotropic hormone axis. We used cross-fostering in mice to in

Early growth response-1 protein is induced by JC virus infection and binds and regulates the JC virus promoter.

JC virus (JCV) is a human polyomavirus that can emerge from a latent state to cause the cytolytic destruction of oligodendrocytes in the brain resulting in the fatal demyelinating disease, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). Previous studies described a cis-acting transcriptional regulatory element in the JCV non-coding control region (NCCR) that is involved in the response of JCV to cytokines. This consists of a 23 base pair GGA/C rich sequence (GRS) near the replication origin (5112 to +4) that contains potential binding sites for Sp1 and Egr-1. Gel shift analysis showed that E
