The Use of Central Pathology Review With Digital Slide Scanning in Advanced-stage Mycosis Fungoides and Sézary Syndrome: A Multi-institutional and International Pathology Study.

This pathology PILOT study aims to define the role and feasibility of centralized pathology review in a cohort of 75 patients from different centers in the United States and Europe using digital slide scanning. The pathologic material from 75 patients who had been diagnosed with mycosis fungoides/Sézary syndrome and were clinically staged as IIb or above was retrieved from 11 participating centers. Each pathology reviewer was provided with the pathologic diagnosis (by the referring pathologist), and the following list of histopathologic criteria (presence or absence) from the initial report: e…

Ultrasound Features as Adjunctive Predictors of Pathological Grade in Phyllodes Tumors of the Breast: An Imaging-Pathology Correlation Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Phyllodes tumors of the breast are rare fibroepithelial neoplasms whose pathological classification remains challenging due to marked histological heterogeneity, often complicating clinical management decisions. This study investigated whether preoperative ultrasound features correlate with pathological grade in phyllodes tumors and can serve as adjunctive information to guide diagnosis and management. METHODS: This retrospective study included 78 patients with pathologically confirmed phyllodes tumors (55 benign, 22 borderline, 1 malignant) who underwent preoperative ultr

Methylome analysis of FTLD patients with TDP-43 pathology identifies epigenetic signatures specific to pathological subtypes.

BACKGROUND: In the last decade, the importance of DNA methylation in the functioning of the central nervous system has been highlighted thro … m frontal cortex (FCX) and cerebellum (CER) from pathologically confirmed FTLD patients with TDP-43 pathology (FTLD-TDP) further divided into five subtypes and including both sporadic and genetic forms (N = 25 pairs per group), and neuropathologically normal controls (N = 42 pairs). Case-control differential methylation analyses were performed, both at the …

Case Report: Concomitant Alzheimer's and Lewy-Related Pathology Extending the Spectrum of Underlying Pathologies of Corticobasal Syndrome.

Corticobasal syndrome (CBS) is clinically characterized by progressive asymmetric rigidity and apraxia together with symptoms suggestive of cortical involvement and basal ganglia dysfunction. The spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases that can manifest with CBS is wide. The associations of CBS with corticobasal degeneration, progressive supranuclear palsy, Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal lobar degenerations, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, or diffuse Lewy body pathology have been reported. We describe the case of a 71-year-old woman with CBS. The histopathological examination of brain tissue re…

Viral and Prion Infections of the Central Nervous System: Radiologic-Pathologic Correlation: From the Radiologic Pathology Archives.

Viral infections of the central nervous system (CNS) range in clinical severity, with the most severe proving fatal within a matter of days. … al CNS infections and uses case material from the archives of the American Institute for Radiologic Pathology, with a focus on the specific clinical characteristics and magnetic resonance imaging features seen in these infections. Where possible, the imaging features that allow distinction of these infections from other CNS inflammatory conditions are highl …

From the radiologic pathology archives: Adrenal tumors and tumor-like conditions in the adult: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Advanced imaging often reveals adrenal tumors and tumor-like conditions in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. When adrenal disease is clinically suspected, cross-sectional imaging can be helpful in evaluating the etiology of the patient's symptoms. When adrenal disease is incidentally identified, what the clinician and patient really want to know is whether the findings are benign or malignant, as this ultimately will affect their next step in management. Using radiologic-pathologic correlation, we broadly classify common, uncommon, and rare tumors and tumor-like conditions that can o

From the radiologic pathology archives: pediatric polycystic kidney disease and other ciliopathies: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Genetic defects of cilia cause a wide range of diseases, collectively known as ciliopathies. Primary, or nonmotile, cilia function as sensory organelles involved in the regulation of cell growth, differentiation, and homeostasis. Cilia are present in nearly every cell in the body and mutations of genes encoding ciliary proteins affect multiple organs, including the kidneys, liver, pancreas, retina, central nervous system (CNS), and skeletal system. Genetic mutations causing ciliary dysfunction result in a large number of heterogeneous phenotypes that can manifest with a variety of overlapping

Characterization of micrometastatic disease in melanoma sentinel lymph nodes by enhanced pathology: recommendations for standardizing pathologic analysis.

Lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy are widely used as a staging technique for patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma who are at risk for metastases. SLN status has been shown to be a strong predictor of prognosis, and a variety of techniques have been used to identify minimal metastatic disease in SLNs. However, there is no validated consensus method for the optimal histologic analysis of SLNs harvested from melanoma patients. This study was conducted: 1) to assess the yield of metastatic melanoma detected in SLNs deemed negative by initial routine pathologic analysis (

Depression in late life, cognitive decline and white matter pathology in two clinico-pathologically investigated cases.

CASE REPORTS: We report two cases of late life depression who became progressively more resistant to treatment, developed cognitive impairment, and began to exhibit neurological abnormalities and evidence of vascular disease. A discussion of the clinical features of the cases is accompanied by reports of neuropathology and neuroimaging findings. Extensive white matter lesions were present on computed tomography in both patients, and basal ganglia infarcts were seen in one. Neuropathology revealed evidence of cerebral atrophy, demyelination and white matter lesions in addition to cerebrovascula…

From the archives of the AFIP. Paragangliomas of the head and neck: radiologic-pathologic correlation. Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.

Paragangliomas of the head and neck are ubiquitous in their distribution, originating from the paraganglia or glomus cells within the carotid body, vagal nerve, middle ear, jugular foramen, and numerous other locations. The typical patient is middle-aged and presents late in the course of the disease, with a painless slow-growing mass. Clinical manifestations include hoarseness of voice, lower cranial nerve palsies, pulsatile tinnitus, and other neuro-otologic symptoms. The overall prognosis of patients with a cervical paraganglioma is favorable, whereas its temporal bone counterpart often res
