Development of the Nurse Attitude Scale short form: factor analysis in a large sample of Japanese psychiatric clinical staff.

The Nurse Attitude Scale (NAS) measures nurses' Expressed Emotion. A short form of the NAS was developed and its reliability and validity examined. After performing factor analysis using 1252 samples, three factors were extracted. Cronbach's alpha for individual subscales was 0.852 for Hostility, 0.846 for Criticism and 0.645 for Positive Remarks. There was a significant correlation between individual subscales in the NAS short form and corresponding subscale in the Maslach Burnout Inventory (P < 0.001). The NAS short form seems to have acceptable reliability and validity.

Psychometric properties of the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory for Children using a non-American population-based sample.

Although previous studies have examined the factor structure of the SPAI-C, adequate factor analytic methodology has not been employed. This study explored the psychometric properties of the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory for Children (SPAI-C), using a non-American population-based sample of older children and young adolescents 11-14 years of age. Initially an exploratory factor analysis was conducted followed 1 year later by a confirmatory factor analysis. Five factors labeled Assertiveness, Public Performance, Physical/Cognitive Symptoms, Social Encounter, and Avoidance were retained an

The reliability and validity of the dichotomous thinking in eating disorders scale.

The Dichotomous Thinking in Eating Disorders Scale (DTEDS) is a short, self-report measure that can be used to assess the presence of a rigid, "black-and-white" cognitive thinking style. It was originally developed for use in a study of psychological predictors of weight regain in obesity. The DTEDS consists of two subscales. Items on the Eating subscale assess dichotomous thinking with regards to eating, dieting or weight, and items on the General subscale assess dichotomous thinking more generally. This study aimed to examine the factor structure and psychometric properties of the DTEDS in a

Early maladaptive schemas and body mass index in subgroups of eating disorders: a differential association.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives were (1) to examine whether 3 eating disorder subgroups, as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) classification system, exhibit a specific profile in terms of early maladaptive schema (EMS) factors, and (2) to investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and EMS factors in each of the individual eating disorder subgroups. METHODS: The presence of EMS was measured by the Young Schema Questionnaire Long Form among patients affected by restrictive anorexia nervosa, binge/purging-type anorexia nervosa

Self-reported psychopathology, adaptive functioning and sense of coherence, and psychiatric diagnosis among young men--a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: To study the associations between psychiatric disorders and self-perceived problems among adolescent boys. METHOD: The study population consisted of 2348 Finnish boys born during 1981 attending obligatory military call-up (79.7% of the original sample). At military call-up in 1999, the boys filled in the Young Adult Self-Report (YASR) and Orientation of Life Questionnaire (SOC-13). Information about psychiatric disorders was obtained from the national military register during the years 1999-2004. RESULTS: Most of the psychopathology, adaptive functioning and SOC scales were associ

Associations among everyday stress, critical life events, and sexual problems.

This study addresses the question of how stress is linked to sexual problems among women and men in close relationships. Psychological symptoms, relationship quality, internal daily stress (i.e., originating within the couple such as conflicts, worry for the partner), external daily stress (i.e., stress arising outside the couple such as job stress, stressful relatives, and so forth), and critical life events were examined with regard to their association with different sexual problems. The results support the hypotheses that (1) there is an incremental effect of stress on sexual problems afte

Single-pass environmental chamber for quantifying human responses to airborne chemicals.

Despite increasing interest in the short-term effects of airborne environmental contaminants, experimental findings are generated at a very slow pace. This is due in part to the expense and complexity of most environmental chambers, which are needed for quantifying effects of wholebody exposures. We lessened this obstacle by designing, constructing, and testing a single-pass, 10-m3 stainless-steel chamber. Compressed air is purified before being sent to an air dilution olfactometer, which supplies 1000 L (1 m3) per minute (referenced to STP) while maintaining 40% relative humidity (RH) and 22.

Changes in lymphocyte subsets after short-term pharmacotherapy in patients with panic disorder.

Panic disorder is associated with a high frequency of comorbid immunological diseases, such as allergies and asthma, although the psychoneuroimmunology of panic disorder is relatively unexplored. The objective of this study was to determine whether panic patients have different immunological findings compared with normal healthy subjects and whether changes in immune function are associated with short-term pharmacotherapy. We also examined whether immunological variables were associated with clinical severity and serum catecholamine levels. Patients with panic disorder (n=26) and healthy contr

Paranoia in African-American men receiving inpatient psychiatric treatment.

The present study tested a continuum model of paranoid symptom expression in a sample of African-American men receiving inpatient treatment in a state psychiatric hospital. The continuum measure comprised the scales of Distrust (DST), Perceived Hostility of Others (PHO), and False Beliefs and Perceptions (FBP) from the Psychiatric Epidemiology Research Interview (PERI), reflecting mild to severe paranoia, in the order listed. They were interviewer administered with other self-report symptom measures, within three weeks of hospital admission, by ethnically matched interviewers. A multivariate m

The effect of life stress on symptoms of heartburn.

OBJECTIVE: Psychosocial stressors have been associated with exacerbations of symptoms in functional and inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. The present longitudinal study tests the general hypothesis that life stressors can exacerbate symptoms in patients with chronic heartburn. METHODS: Sixty subjects with current heartburn symptoms were recruited by community advertisement and assessed for presence of stressful life events retrospectively over the preceding 6 months and prospectively for 4 months. Symptom severity by daily diary, quality of life, and psychological symptoms

A comparison of delivery methods of cognitive-behavioral therapy for panic disorder: an international multicenter trial.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the psychological treatment of choice for panic disorder (PD). However, given limited access to CBT, it must be delivered with maximal cost-effectiveness. Previous researchers have found that a brief computer-augmented CBT was as effective as extended therapist-delivered CBT. To test this finding, this study randomly allocated 186 patients with PD across 2 sites in Scotland and Australia to 12 sessions of therapist-delivered CBT (CBT12), 6 sessions of therapist-delivered (CBT6) or computer-augmented CBT (CBT6-CA), or a waitlist control. On a composite meas

Differences between those who panic by day and those who also panic by night.

This study examined the characteristics, correlates, background demographic, and personality variables associated with panic among those who panic exclusively from a waking state and those who also panic out of sleep. Participants were recruited through advertising in print media and through anxiety/panic support groups. Some group differences in the characteristics of panic and the associations between panic and other variables were found. Specifically, levels of anxiety sensitivity were higher, panic duration was longer, and panic was less strongly related to catastrophic cognitions for the

Depression in Korean immigrants with hepatitis B and related liver diseases.

The authors evaluated 50 Korean immigrants who had chronic viral hepatitis or who were healthy carriers for the hepatitis B virus in terms of the relationships between their depression scores, psychosocial stressors, social support, and biological markers of dysfunction. All participants completed a questionnaire, describing their worries and concerns, and the shortform of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-sf). Hepatic transaminases, albumin levels, and prothrombin times were measured during routine clinic follow-up visits and were abstracted from the medical record. Values recorded within 3
