Increased fear of falling in primary Sjögren's syndrome: kinesiophobia, impaired balance and poor sleep quality as triggering factors.

The aim of this study was to explore the link between fear of falling and factors that may contribute to falls in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). Our study included a total of 67 patients with pSS, aged between 18 and 65. The following tests were performed on each of them by the same researcher: (I) Pain Quality Assessment Scale (PQAS); (II) Berg Balance Scale (BBS); (III) Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI); (IV) Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36); (V) Tampa Kinesiophobia Fatigue Scale Questionnaire (TSK-F); (VI) International Falls Efficiency Sc

Nomophobia in Lebanon: Scale validation and association with psychological aspects.

OBJECTIVES: Nomophobia, an abbreviation of "No mobile phone phobia", is characterized by the illogical fear of being detached from the mobile phone or unable to use it. Research have provided evidence of an association between increased cellular phone use and multiple health issues, such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, and others. To our knowledge, there are no Lebanese studies about nomophobia, despite the high incorporation rate of mobile phones in Lebanon and the likelihood of suffering from anxiety, depression, and other conditions due to nomophobic attitudes. The study objectives were t

Childhood generalized specific phobia as an early marker of internalizing psychopathology across the lifespan: results from the World Mental Health Surveys.

BACKGROUND: Specific phobia (SP) is a relatively common disorder associated with high levels of psychiatric comorbidity. Because of its early onset, SP may be a useful early marker of internalizing psychopathology, especially if generalized to multiple situations. This study aimed to evaluate the association of childhood generalized SP with comorbid internalizing disorders. METHODS: We conducted retrospective analyses of the cross-sectional population-based World Mental Health Surveys using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. Outcomes were lifetime prevalence, age of onset, and

Reduced amygdalar and hippocampal size in adults with generalized social phobia.

BACKGROUND: Structural and functional brain imaging studies suggest abnormalities of the amygdala and hippocampus in posttraumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder. However, structural brain imaging studies in social phobia are lacking. METHODS: In total, 24 patients with generalized social phobia (GSP) and 24 healthy controls underwent 3-dimensional structural magnetic resonance imaging of the amygdala and hippocampus and a clinical investigation. RESULTS: Compared with controls, GSP patients had significantly reduced amygdalar (13%) and hippocampal (8%) size. The reduction in

Predicting excessive body image concerns among British university students: the unique role of Appearance-based Rejection Sensitivity.

The present research examined the extent to which interpersonal concerns about rejection based on appearance, or Appearance-based Rejection Sensitivity (Appearance-RS), serves as an indicator of risk for excessive body image concerns. Extending previous research, we examined the association between Appearance-RS and symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and cosmetic surgery attitudes among 106 British university students. Consistent with predictions, Appearance-RS uniquely predicted greater degree of BDD symptoms after controlling for other known predictor variables. Also, as expected, Ap

Implications of comorbid alcohol dependence among individuals with social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is highly comorbid with alcohol use disorders (AUD) yet the nature of this comorbidity remains unclear. To better understand these associations, we first examined whether SAD was related to AUD above and beyond relevant covariates. Second, we examined the psychosocial impairment associated with the comorbidity of SAD and AUD versus SAD without AUD. Third, the temporal sequencing of SAD and AUD among comorbid individuals was examined. METHODS: Participants included 5,877 (50% females) adults from the National Comorbidity Survey. RESULTS: As predicted,

Friendship quality, body dissatisfaction, dieting and disordered eating in adolescent girls.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined relationships between adolescent girls' body dissatisfaction and disordered eating, quality of same-sex peer relationships and beliefs about thinness in interpersonal relationships, before and after controlling for depression. DESIGN: Correlations between body image, eating and friendship variables were examined before and after controlling for depressive symptoms. Top and bottom quartiles on symptom variables were identified and analyses of variance, with and without depressive symptoms entered as a covariate, were used to compare scores between groups on frie

Inpatient treatment of complicated agoraphobia and panic disorder.

Despite recent advances in the treatment of agoraphobia and panic disorder, some patients do not respond to standard outpatient regimens of biological and psychosocial intervention and may require more intensive, closely supervised care. The authors describe a specialized inpatient program that integrates pharmacotherapy, intensive levels of exposure and other behavioral therapies, a structured and strategically reinforcing environment, panic and anxiety management strategies, and other interventions designed specifically for patients with complicated panic-based disorders. Outcome data for 25

Postpanic anxiety disorder: diagnosis and treatment.

Patients with a postpanic anxiety disorder (PPAD) have panic attacks less frequently than patients with a panic disorder. A PPAD must be suspected when a physician notes the following: persistent somatic complaints despite repeatedly normal results of physical examinations and laboratory tests, reluctance to engage in certain activities or avoidance of activities because the patient fears the precipitation of panic or aggravation of symptoms, and history of one or more panic attacks. Three different groups of medication are effective in the treatment of PPAD: alprazolam (a triazolobenzodiazepi

Kinesiophobia and associated factors among people with musculoskeletal disorders in Ethiopia: a multicenter cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Kinesiophobia has a major health impact on patients with Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in their functional and physical activities, which leads to poor outcomes, loss of motivation, loss of mobility, and decreased quality of life. Despite the burden of kinesiophobia among MSDs, there is limited evidence about the burden of kinesiophobia in Ethiopia. Thus, this study aimed to assess the prevalence and its associated factors of kinesiophobia among MSD patients attending physiotherapy outpatient clinics. METHOD: An institutional multi-center cross-sectional study was conducted f

Resting-state functional connectivity in gelotophobes: A neuroscientific perspective on the fear of laughter.

Gelotophobia, the fear of being laughed at, is characterized by heightened sensitivity to ridicule and a tendency to perceive laughter in social situations as mocking. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) acquires brain functional connectivity while the individual remains at rest, without engaging in specific tasks. Recent studies have investigated task-based fMRI and white matter in gelotophobes; however, the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in this group remains unclear. This study aimed to examine differences in rsFC between gelotophobes and non-gelotoph

The characteristics and prevalence of phobias in pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective was to estimate the population prevalence of specific phobias (including pregnancy related specific phobias) and associated mental disorders. The secondary objective was to investigate the effectiveness of routinely collected screening tools (depression and anxiety screens, Whooley and GAD-2 respectively) in identifying specific phobias. Specific phobias are the most common anxiety disorder to occur during pregnancy, but studies on prevalence and clinical correlates of specific phobias, including pregnancy related specific phobias are lacking. DESIGN: Cross-se

Does sharing good news buffer fear of bad news? A daily diary study of fear of cancer recurrence in couples approaching the first mammogram post-diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: The core of fear of cancer recurrence (FCR)-a top concern of couples after successful breast cancer (BC) treatment-is fear of death. Daily relationship processes may be instrumental in regulating FCR as triggers of existential distress are encountered. We tested the hypothesis that daily capitalization, the process of sharing good news (capitalization attempts) to a partner perceived as responsive (responsiveness), buffers patient and spouse FCR as they confront the first mammogram post-diagnosis. METHODS: Fifty-seven early-stage BC survivors and their spouses reported daily FCR, c

Examining the dimensionality of the Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventory.

OBJECTIVE: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is a common concern among cancer survivors, and the Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventory (FCRI) is a frequently used measure to assess FCR. Given that the dimensionality of FCR has received recent debate, the overall goal of this secondary analysis was to re-examine the dimensionality of the FCRI using confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) to compare models of FCR, using data from a large sample of cancer survivors. METHODS: Three models of FCR (including unidimensional and multidimensional models of the FCRI) were informed by the literature and proposed
