Serum and CSF cytokine profile in patients with facial palsy (Bell's palsy): a pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Facial nerve palsy is the most common cranial nerve disorder, and over 60% are idiopathic (Bell's palsy, BP). An inflammatory process is discussed as a causative factor. The aim of this study was to search for changes in various cytokine concentrations in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in patients with facial nerve palsy. METHODS: In this prospective study, 47 patients with peripheral facial nerve palsy were included. Of these, 40 patients were diagnosed as BP and seven patients as non-idiopathic peripheral facial palsy (nipFP). Seventeen cytokines, including IL-1

Assessing the link between cerebellar volume and cognitive function in Alzheimer's disease: a pilot study.

The cerebellum, long recognized for its role in motor functions, has become increasingly acknowledged for its involvement in a broader spectrum of cognitive functions. Given the cerebellum's strong neuronal connections with cerebral regions affected by neurodegenerative diseases, this study investigated the cerebellar contribution to cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study retrospectively analysed 127 individuals with subjective cognitive decline (SCD, n = 46), mild cognitive impairment due to AD (MCI, n = 24), and AD dementia (ADD, n = 57). Grey and white matter volumes of t

Short physical performance battery: Pilot study of a human motion capture app (MobiSPPB).

BACKGROUND: A standardized fall risk assessment can guide targeted interventions. The widely used short physical performance battery (SPPB) for mobility assessment covers balance, gait speed, and lower limb strength, but is time-consuming and requires trained raters. The newly developed video-based smartphone application called MobiSPPB provides a rater-independent SPPB assessment. This study evaluated the technical validity and reliability of the MobiSPPB app compared to the standard rater-based SPPB. In addition, the ability to detect disease-related movement patterns was investigated. METH

Comparison of Contrast-Enhanced Mammography with MRI for Preoperative Assessment of Breast Cancer: A Pilot Study.

This study aimed at evaluating the role of contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) for detection of multifocal/multicentric disease as compared to MRI in patients with breast carcinoma (BC). The study commenced after obtaining the institute's ethics approval. All included patients underwent CEM and MRI within an interval of 2 weeks. Images were interpreted as per the respective BIRADS lexicon. In addition to the baseline assessment of the index mass and its size, each modality was specifically evaluated for the presence of any additional findings like satellite lesions or non-mass enhancement, whi

Right-sided hemicolectomy with complete mesocolic excision and modified D3 lymphadenectomy - a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Principles of complete mesocolic excision with central vascular ligation were first published by Hohenberger with promising oncological results of right-sided colon carcinoma. Nowadays preserving of mesocolon is a gold standard; however, -there is a lack of definitive answer about the extent of lymphadenectomy. Our modified D3 lymphadenectomy can reach higher count of lymph nodes retrieval, and therefore can lead to upstaging in the patient. Nevertheless, more complex procedure can lead to various perioperative complications. METHODS: A total of 28 patients were operated by robo

Galvanic vestibular stimulation for Mal de Debarquement syndrome: a pilot study on therapeutic potential.

Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (MdDS) is a debilitating neuro-otological disorder causing a persistent sensation of self-motion, often triggered by passive motion like being on a boat (MT-MdDS) or non-motion triggered (non-MT MdDS). Due to the unknown pathophysiological mechanism, available treatment options for managing symptoms are limited. Within the framework of a pilot study, our objective was to investigate the effect, safety, and feasibility of galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) as a potential alternative treatment option for MdDS. The trial included 12 MdDS patients and 12 controls. I

Diagnosis through differentiation: a pilot study on improving the diagnostic efficiency of primary headaches in ICHD3.

BACKGROUND: What is the minimum number of questions necessary to diagnose any given primary headache disorder? The answer to this question may provide clinicians with a more efficient approach to history taking and lead to a more concise form of ICHD3. In this project, we attempt to address this problem mathematically. METHODS: We defined a headache phenotype as a collection of characteristics, variables that can take on a Boolean (true/false) value and correspond to elements of the diagnostic criteria for each headache in ICHD3. There may be multiple phenotypes that fit a given diagnosis in

Harnessing eDNA metabarcoding for mosquito surveillance: a pilot study in Ethiopia's Great Rift Valley.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases account for over 17% of all infectious diseases worldwide, with malaria and mosquito-borne arboviruses emerging as a significant and escalating threat. In Ethiopia, malaria and arboviruses such as Dengue and Yellow fever viruses pose substantial public health challenges; however, surveillance efforts are hindered by traditional methods that are costly and labor-intensive, yet unable to identify cryptic species. Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding presents a promising alternative, facilitating noninvasive and high-throughput detection of vector species direc

Raman Spectroscopy of Cell-Free Cervicovaginal Lavage for HPV Lesion Diagnosis: A Pilot Study.

High-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is the leading etiological factor in cervical cancer, creating a pressing need for less invasive and more objective diagnostic tools. This pilot study pioneers the application of Raman spectroscopy to cell-free cervicovaginal lavage (CVL) for distinguishing between low-grade and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL and HSIL) in HPV-positive patients. Raman spectra were acquired at 532-nm excitation from cell-free CVL samples of 20 patients with histologically confirmed LSIL (n = 9) or HSIL (n = 11). Comparative analysis of Raman bands revealed

Feasibility and outcome of the fewer falls in multiple sclerosis intervention: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

Falls are common among people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) and bring risk of both injury and reduced quality of life. The multifactorial background to risk of falls necessitates adapted and comprehensive interventions. The "Fewer Falls in MS" intervention is a manualized online self-management fall prevention programme designed for both ambulatory and non-ambulatory PwMS. We conducted a pilot trial to evaluate feasibility and outcome of the Fewer Falls in MS to determine whether to advance to a full-scale randomized controlled trial (RCT). In this two-armed parallel group study, 46 adult PwM
