BACKGROUND: The purpose of this meta-analysis was to compare the surgical outcomes of head and neck reconstruction via free flap surgery, with neck vessels versus superficial temporal vessels as recipient vessels.
METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases were systematically searched via the following keywords: ("superficial temporal" OR "temporal") AND ("free flap" OR "free tissue transfer") AND ("head and neck" OR "face"). The following data were extracted: first author, publication year, flap type, reconstruction region, concordant vein graft, recipient vessel, and postoperative co

PURPOSE: To introduce a novel surgical technique for treatment of macroblepharon and diamond eye conformation in dogs.
METHODS: Lateral canthal reconstruction was used in dogs with prominent eyelid malformations resulting in ocular surface disease. Lateral canthus was resected and new lateral canthus was created using a two-layer closure. This technique was performed either alone or in combination with additional procedure(s). Additionally, this technique was used to resect lateral canthal dermoid.
RESULTS: One hundred and fifty-three eyes of 85 dogs were included in the study. Procedure was

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Forequarter and hindquarter amputations have traditionally been closed with local tissues, but the technique is plagued by a high rate of complication such as marginal necrosis, seroma, infection, and dehiscence. Filet of limb flaps have been used when local tissues are insufficient for closure, and despite their use in more extensive and complex wounds, outcomes seem to be better in these cases. Recognizing that filet of limb flaps not only serve to cover the wound, but also eliminate dead space, supplement at-risk and/or radiated tissue, pad underlying hard structu

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide a comprehensive resource for pediatric surgeons and pediatricians caring for patients with Mullerian and vaginal anomalies, with a focus on recent changes in practice.
RECENT FINDINGS: Herein, we provide a foundation for understanding the anatomy, presentation, and work up of Mullerian and vaginal anomalies. We review how to approach management of these anomalies when in isolation or when associated with anorectal malformations. We discuss the evolution of the management of neovaginal discussion with a current emphasis on patient-centered and directed care.

Lower extremity trauma can result in extensive soft tissue loss, which can require a staged multispecialty approach. Flaps can be an excellent choice for significant soft tissue loss. A variety of variables goes into the selection of a flap including understanding what the recipient site needs, available donor sites, nature of trauma, and utilization of indices to predict limb salvageability in order to strategically select the correct flap option.

Sphenoid wing dysplasia is a characteristic finding in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Some of these children develop proptosis and vision loss secondary to the spheno-orbital encephalocele. A 6-year-old boy presented to us with complaints of painless progressive uni-ocular vision loss and progressive pulsatile proptosis. Imaging revealed spheno-orbital encephalocele into the orbit through the dysplastic posterior orbital wall. 3D printed customized implant was designed and placed to fit the defect. This prevented further herniation of the temporal lobe into the orbit, leading to

UNLABELLED: Cranial vault remodelling for craniosynostosis aims to increase intracranial volume to facilitate brain growth, avoid the development of raised intracranial pressure and address cosmesis. The extent of vault expansion is predominantly limited by scalp closure and reconstruction technique. Virtual surgical planning tools have been developed to predict post-operative changes and guide expansion. We present a validation study of a novel 'Dura-based Automated Vault Expansion-Remodeling' (DAVE-R) model to guide pre-operative planning for fronto-orbital advancement and remodelling (FOAR)

Numerous surgical techniques for median cleft lip repair have been described; however, most cause excessively sharp peaks or the collapse of Cupid's bow. We report a technique for median cleft lip repair using a mucosal skin flap and full-thickness skin graft and 15 years of follow-up. Our technique provides acceptable formation of the columella, philtrum, and the two peaks of Cupid's bow. In this paper, we cite our previously reported techniques and add new findings and discussion based on the long-term postoperative outcomes of this procedure. Advantages and disadvantages of this technique a

Background: Autologous tissues such as buccal mucosa (BM) are widely used for reconstruction of urethral strictures; however, limitations such as donor site morbidity and scarce tissue supply require the development of alternative biomaterials for urethral repair. The goals of this study were to determine the safety and efficacy of bi-layer silk fibroin (BLSF) matrices for urethral stricture repair and compare histological and functional outcomes to the standard approach, BM urethroplasty under good laboratory practices.Material and methods: A total of 13 rabbits exhibiting urethral stricture

Plastic surgeons face unique challenges in reconstructing eyebrows due to their complex anatomy and gender variations. We report a case of a 16-year-old female who presented with post-burn bilateral eyebrow alopecia. Bilateral eyebrow reconstruction was performed with scalp island flaps based on the posterior branch of the superficial temporal artery, which showed good postoperative outcomes. This case showed that the superficial temporal artery island flap continues to be a versatile option for managing eyebrow alopecia, especially in cases of deep burns of the face.

Soft tissue reconstruction in the lower limbs presents a significant challenge, particularly when addressing defects in the distal third of the leg, ankle, and foot. The reverse sural flap reliant on the perforating branches of the peroneal artery has emerged as a versatile option, offering a solution for patients for whom microsurgical techniques are not feasible. Despite its advantages, the procedure carries inherent risks, especially in populations with underlying conditions, such as venous insufficiency, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, as well as in elderly patients, where the likeli

The aim of this study is to present a sequential strategy of soft-tissue, non-osteogenic distraction with a novel device, followed by microvascular bony reconstruction for severe cases of mandibular hypoplasia. The case of a 21-year-old woman with Goldenhar syndrome is presented, whose mandible remained severely hypoplastic despite previous attempts at distraction and was not suitable for further osteogenic distraction. Soft tissue deficiency and pin track scarring prevented free fibular transfers. A personalized distractor, anchored to the cranium and the mandibular symphysis, was designed to

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There are many surgical approaches for execution of a thoracic corpectomy. In cases of challenging deformity, traditional posterior approaches might not be sufficient to complete the resection of the vertebral body. In this technical note, we describe indications and technique for a transdural multilevel high thoracic corpectomy.
METHODS: A 25-year-old man with a history of neurofibromatosis type 1 presented with instrumentation failure after a previous T1-T12 posterior spinal fusion, extensive laminectomy, and tumor resection. The patient presented with progressive

When planning an adolescent's primary surgery for recurrent patella instability, the surgeon must weigh the failure risk of performing medial patellofemoral reconstruction (MPFLR) versus the potential morbidity of adding a concomitant bony procedure, such as tibial tubercle osteotomy. In this age group, isolated MPFLR is an excellent operation with high clinical success, low failure rates, and favorable complication profile. Patients with high grade J-sign and severe trochlea dysplasia, apprehension into deep flexion, and extremes of bony malalignment, including elevated tibial tubercle-trochl

BACKGROUND: Familial partial lipodystrophy (FPLD) is a rare disease, presenting as localized areas of lipodystrophy in the body and associated with defined genes mutations. Labia majora hypertrophy is rarely reported in the literature, and it has been described only once associated with the FLPD syndrome. We present a rare case of labia majora lipodystrophy successfully corrected with a pubo-pexy and a labial reduction plasty.
METHODS: A 26-year-old girl presents with massive labia majora hypertrophy, not associated with any type of systemic comorbidity or infection. The hypertrophy was pure
