Childhood predictors of male criminality: a prospective population-based follow-up study from age 8 to late adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: To study childhood predictors for late adolescence criminality. METHOD: The follow-up sample included 2,713 Finnish boys born in 1981. Information about the 8-year-old boy' problem behavior was obtained from parents, teachers, and the children themselves. The follow-up information about criminal offenses was based on the national police register between the years 1998 and 2001 when the subjects were 16 to 20 years old. RESULTS: According to the national police register, 22.2% of boys had at least one criminal offense other than a minor traffic violation during the 4-year study per…

Mental health problems in a large representative sample of children and adolescents: Prevalence, associations with problematic substance use and psychometric properties of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire.

Mental health problems are already widespread in childhood and adolescence. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is an internationally widely used instrument for assessing mental health problems and prosocial behavior in children and adolescents. Particularly, the Total Difficulties score (TDS) from the SDQ (calculated from the sum of all problem scales) is considered a good estimator for mental health problems. Heretofore, there are relatively few estimates for mental health problems based on representative samples that rely on self-assessments by children and adolescents. Altho

QEEG Characterizations During Hyperventilation, Writing and Reading Conditions: A Pre-Post Cognitive-Behavioral Intervention Study on Students with Learning Difficulty.

Background: Electroencephalography (EEG) has been used to measure neural correlates of cognitive and social development in children for decades. It is essential to evaluate the relationship between EEG parameters and cognitive measures to understand the mechanisms of learning problems better. Methods and procedure: Fifty school-going children with complaints of learning problems were studied. EEG and other cognitive measures were used to assess children before and after PEABLS; a cognitive-behavioral intervention was imparted. EEG was recorded while hyperventilation, writing, and reading condi

Alexithymia and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in Chinese undergraduate students during the COVID-19 national lockdown: The mediating role of sleep problems and the moderating role of self-esteem.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether sleep disturbance was a mediator between alexithymic traits and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) COVID-19 pandemic-related stress symptoms, and explored whether self-esteem moderated the alexithymic contribution to poor sleep and PTSD symptoms. METHOD: A representative sample of young adults (N = 2,485) from six universities in Southwest China completed online self-report surveys on alexithymia, sleep, PTSD, self-esteem, sociodemographic information, and health-related behaviors. RESULTS: High alexithymic young adults were found to be more likely t

Reflecting on Therapeutic Jurisprudence in the Criminalization of Mental Illness and Addiction.

Problem-solving courts were created as a means of therapeutic jurisprudence. They arose in the context of the post-deinstitutionalization influx of defendants with behavioral and social problems entering the criminal court system. Seeing that typical judicial practices were poor solutions for individuals primarily facing problems such as homelessness, substance use disorders, and mental illness, courts developed specialized dockets as a solution to the problem of not being able to restrict the flow of these individuals into courtrooms. Although highly regarde, mental health courts (MHCs) and d

Cerebral Palsy: An Overview.

Cerebral palsy, which occurs in two to three out of 1,000 live births, has multiple etiologies resulting in brain injury that affects movement, posture, and balance. The movement disorders associated with cerebral palsy are categorized as spasticity, dyskinesia, ataxia, or mixed/other. Spasticity is the most common movement disorder, occurring in 80% of children with cerebral palsy. Movement disorders of cerebral palsy can result in secondary problems, including hip pain or dislocation, balance problems, hand dysfunction, and equinus deformity. Diagnosis of cerebral palsy is primarily clinical

Sleep Disturbances in Essential Tremor and Parkinson Disease: A Polysomnographic Study.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep problems are a common non-motor complication of Parkinson disease (PD), and patients with essential tremor (ET) share a number of motor and non-motor features of PD. To clarify the relationship between these disorders, we evaluated the sleep problems in patients with ET and PD using assessment scales and objective polysomnographic (PSG) testing. METHOD: Twenty-one consecutive patients with PD, 16 with ET, and 14 healthy subjects participated in this study and were compared in terms of sleep related complaints, final sleep related diagnosis, and polysomnographic features. Trauma experience in children and adolescents: an assessment of the effects of trauma type and role of interpersonal proximity.

The psychiatric sequelae associated with childhood experience(s) of trauma is complex and distinguishable from that of adult trauma exposure. Categories of impairment associated with experiences of early trauma include internalizing and externalizing emotional and behavioral problems, posttraumatic stress symptomatology, and dissociation. The present study assessed the relationship between the type of trauma experience (i.e., non-interpersonal or interpersonal) and the manifestation of a wide range of psychiatric symptomatology using prospective longitudinal data from a community sample of eth

A clinical approach to arterial ischemic childhood stroke: increasing knowledge over the last decade.

Childhood stroke is increasingly being recognized as an important burden not only for affected children and families, but also for socioeconomic reasons. A primary problem is delayed diagnosis, due to the many mimics of childhood stroke, and the variety of manifesting symptoms. The most important is hemiparesis (with/without dysphasia or facial palsy), but ataxia, seizures, and many more are also possible. Suspicion of stroke has to be ascertained by neuroimaging, gold standard being (diffusion weighted) magnetic resonance. Risk factors are multiple, but their presence might help to increase t

Children's sleep and adjustment: the moderating role of vagal regulation.

Children's vagal tone and vagal suppression were examined as moderators of associations between children's sleep disruptions and adjustment problems. A relatively large sample (n = 167) of boys and girls who ranged in age between 8 and 9 years participated with their parents. Sleep was examined via actigraphy in the child's home for seven consecutive days. Children's vagal tone was examined during baseline conditions, and their vagal suppression was assessed in response to an inter-adult argument. In comparison with children exhibiting higher levels of vagal tone, those with lower vagal tone w

Extended temporal gradient for the retrograde and anterograde amnesia produced by ibotenate entorhinal cortex lesions in mice.

Effects of ibotenic entorhinal cortex (EC) lesions on both retrograde and anterograde amnesia in mice were assessed using two-choice discrimination tasks learned at different intervals before surgery in two eight-arm radial mazes. The results indicated that EC-lesioned mice were severely impaired in postoperative retention of discrimination problems learned 3 d or 2 weeks prior to surgery, but showed no deficit on problems learned between 4, and up to 6 weeks before surgery, as compared to sham-operated controls. When trained on a novel two-choice discrimination problem (not acquired preoperat

Drinking patterns and drinking problems in 1984: results from a general population survey.

Findings on alcohol consumption and alcohol problems from a 1984 general population survey are presented and compared to previous survey findings. Eighteen percent of all men and 5% of all women were classified as frequent heavy drinkers; 6% of all men drinkers and 2% of all women drinkers reported that they got "drunk" as often as once per week or more. A system for measuring drinking problems, based largely on the work of Cahalan and Room, is presented and explained. As when interpreting any system of measuring drinking problems in a general population survey, readers must be aware that the

Copy number variation at the 22q11.2 locus influences prevalence, severity, and psychiatric impact of sleep disturbance.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance is common, impairing, and may affect symptomatology in developmental neuropsychiatric disorders. Here, we take a genetics-first approach to study the complex role of sleep in psychopathology. Specifically, we examine severity of sleep disturbance in individuals with a reciprocal copy number variant (CNV) at the 22q11.2 locus and determine sleep's effect on psychiatric symptoms. CNVs (deletion or duplication) at this locus confer some of the greatest known risks of neuropsychiatric disorders; recent studies suggest the 22q11.2 deletion negatively impacts sleep, but

Characteristics of Subgroups in the Adult Baby/Diaper Lover Community.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of research on adult baby/diaper lover (ABDL) behavior, particularly from community samples. Prior studies have not examined differences between the AB and DL subgroups in the ABDL community. AIM: To explore whether endorsements of AB role-play enjoyment and ratings of sexual enjoyment during ABDL activity were related to parenting and attachment variables, negative mood states, and reported problems with ABDL and to explore differences by relationship status and by sexual orientation. METHOD: Data from a larger survey of an online ABDL community were analyzed. Th

Pre-Admission Oral Clonidine to Reduce Severe Pre-Operative Anxiety in Pediatric Patients with Behavioral Disorders: A Case Series.

Controlling preoperative anxiety is necessary in pediatric patients to avoid adverse effects such as emergence delirium, behavioral problems, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety prior to future procedures, and increased analgesic doses in the recovery room. Some patients, especially ones with behavioral issues, have a difficult time arriving at the hospital. Medications given at home can be helpful. We describe a case series of six patients who received pre-admission oral clonidine prior to arrival to the hospital. The patients were all able to enter the hospital without difficulty and the

Effects of the Medicaid coverage cliff on low-income elderly Medicare beneficiaries.

The Medicaid coverage "cliff" occurs when Medicare beneficiaries with household income exceeding 100% of the federal poverty level lose eligibility for supplemental Medicaid coverage. Using a regression discontinuity design with data from Medical Expenditure Panel Survey and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2007-2019, we demonstrate that the cliff increases out-of-pocket spending by 25% and the probability of experiencing problems paying medical bills by 44.4% without decreases in overall health care spending. However, there is evidence that near-poor Medicare beneficiaries
