Analysis of Motor Control and Learning in Human-Robot Interaction during Game Guided Movements.

Robotic devices can be used in upper limb rehabilitation in order to help the total or partial functional recovery. Robots can perform repetitive activities for a long period of time, which may be beneficial for rehabilitation processes. In this context, this study uses a bi-manual robotic device to investigate motor learning and control for the upper limbs among different game guided tasks, and inspect the user's grip force exerted in response to perturbations. The robotic device resembles a bicycle handlebar, instrumented with load cells to measure torques and grip forces. It is equipped wit

Modelling and robust controller design for an underactuated self-balancing robot with uncertain parameter estimation.

A comprehensive literature review of self-balancing robot (SBR) provides an insight to the strengths and limitations of the available control techniques for different applications. Most of the researchers have not included the payload and its variations in their investigations. To address this problem comprehensively, it was realized that a rigorous mathematical model of the SBR will help to design an effective control for the targeted system. A robust control for a two-wheeled SBR with unknown payload parameters is considered in these investigations. Although, its mechanical design has the ad

Transition from standard robotic prostatectomy to Retzius-sparing prostatectomy: feasibility and early outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Retzius-sparing robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (rsRARP) has gained popularity due to superior early continence outcomes compared to standard robotic prostatectomy (sRARP). We evaluate the results of a single surgeon who transitioned from sRARP to rsRARP and compare oncologic and functional outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all prostatectomies performed by a single surgeon between June 2018 and October 2020. Perioperative, oncologic, and functional data were collected and analyzed. Patients who underwent sRARP were compared with those who underwen

Impact of Age on Long-Term Urinary Continence after Robotic-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy.

Aim and Objectives: We aimed to test the impact of age on long-term urinary continence (≥12 months) in patients undergoing robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy. Methods and Materials: We relied on an institutional tertiary-care database to identify the patients who underwent robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy between January 2014 and January 2021. Patients were divided into three age groups: age group one (≤60 years), age group two (61-69 years) and age group three (≥70 years). Multivariable logistic regression models tested the differences between the age groups in the analyses addressi

Urinary continence in high-risk prostate cancer after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Urinary incontinence is common postoperative complication following robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) in patients with prostate cancer (PCa). Despite the increasing adoption of RARP in the treatment of high-risk PCa (HRPC), concerns persist regarding the adequacy of reported continence outcomes in this subgroup. This review aims to illuminate the state of continence recovery in HRPC patients post-RARP. RECENT FINDINGS: Urinary continence (UC) recovery rates in HRPC was reported to be lower than the intermediate/low-risk counterparts from 6 to 24 months post-RARP.

Indoor 2D Positioning Method for Mobile Robots Based on the Fusion of RSSI and Magnetometer Fingerprints.

Received signal strength indicator (RSSI)-based fingerprinting is a widely used technique for indoor localization, but these methods suffer from high error rates due to various reflections, interferences, and noises. The use of disturbances in the magnetic field in indoor localization methods has gained increasing attention in recent years, since this technology provides stable measurements with low random fluctuations. In this paper, a novel fingerprinting-based indoor 2D positioning method, which utilizes the fusion of RSSI and magnetometer measurements, is proposed for mobile robots. The me

Robotic Inguinal Hernia Repair - Update 2022 during the SARS-COVID-19 Pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Inguinal hernia repair is one of the most common surgical procedures performed by general surgeons. Numerous articles have shown that robotic inguinal hernia repair is safe and effective, but also more costly than other hernia repair techniques. The robotic platform uses high-definition visualization and articulating instruments. A growing number of surgeons are using this technology to refine and obtain a critical view of the myopectineal orifice for hernia repair while lessening the pain associated with the open surgical approach. Lower insufflation pressures and good results w

OCT-guided Robotic Subretinal Needle Injections: A Deep Learning-Based Registration Approach.

Subretinal injection (SI) is an ophthalmic surgical procedure that allows for the direct injection of therapeutic substances into the subretinal space to treat vitreoretinal disorders. Although this treatment has grown in popularity, various factors contribute to its difficulty. These include the retina's fragile, nonregenerative tissue, as well as hand tremor and poor visual depth perception. In this context, the usage of robotic devices may reduce hand tremors and facilitate gradual and controlled SI. For the robot to successfully move to the target area, it needs to understand the spatial r

Superior Mesenteric Artery Injury during Robotic Radical Nephrectomy: Scenarios and Management Strategies.

Injury to the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) is a rare, underreported, and potentially devastating complication. This study aims to propose a systematic workup to describe how to prevent and manage SMA injury in a standardized stepwise manner. Three different instances of intraoperative injury to the SMA are described in an accompanying video. All three occurred when the SMA was misidentified as the left renal artery during left robotic radical nephrectomy. In the first case, the SMA was mistakenly identified as the renal artery, but after further dissection, the real renal artery was identi

Comparison of Quality of Life after Robotic, Video-Assisted, and Open Surgery for Lung Cancer.

Post-operative quality of life (QOL) has become crucial in choosing operative approaches in thoracic surgery. However, compared to VATS and thoracotomy, QOL results post-RATS are limited. We compared QOL before and after RATS and between RATS, VATS, and thoracotomy. We conducted a retrospective review of lung cancer surgical patients from 2015 to 2020. Patients completed validated EORTC QOL questionnaires (QLQ-C30 and QLQ-LC13). Results were analysed using the EORTC Scoring Guide, with statistical analysis. A total of 47 (94%) pre- and post-RATS questionnaires were returned. Forty-two patients

Robot-Assisted Kyphoplasty versus Fluoroscopy-Assisted Kyphoplasty: A Meta-Analysis of Postoperative Outcomes.

Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures are the most common manifestation of osteoporosis. Percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) can lead to both pain improvement and correction of kyphosis secondary to collapsed vertebral bodies. Robot-assisted (RA) PKP has been reported to provide better vertebral body fracture correction than conventional fluoroscopy-assisted (FA) PKP. The aim of this meta-analysis is to compare clinical outcomes of RA PKP versus FA PKP. The Pubmed, Embase, and MEDLINE electronic databases were searched from January 1900 to December 2022, with no language restrictions for rel

Robot-Assisted Transcranial Doppler Versus Transthoracic Echocardiography for Right to Left Shunt Detection.

BACKGROUND: Right to left shunt (RLS), including patent foramen ovale, is a recognized risk factor for stroke. RLS/patent foramen ovale diagnosis is made by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), which is insensitive, transesophageal echocardiography, which is invasive, and transcranial Doppler (TCD), which is noninvasive and accurate but scarce. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, single-arm device clinical trial of robot-assisted TCD (raTCD) versus TTE for RLS diagnosis at 6 clinical sites in patients who presented with an event suspicious for embolic cerebrovascular ischemia from October 6

Single-port robotic-assisted ureteral reconstruction for management of strictures after renal transplantation.

Ureteral strictures are a common and often challenging complication of renal transplantation. The use of single-port (SP) robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery is a novel approach in the management of these patients. Here we describe 3 patients with stricture of the transplant ureter causing hydronephrosis and allograft dysfunction, whose ureteral reconstructions were successfully performed using the SP robotic-assisted laparoscopic approach. Two patients underwent transplant-to-native ureteroureterostomy and 1 patient underwent ureteroneocystostomy. We demonstrate that the use of concurrent u
