Modification of the feeding behavior of dairy cows through live yeast supplementation.

The objective of this study was to determine if the feeding behavior of dairy cows is modified through live yeast supplementation. Twelve lactating Holstein dairy cows (2 primiparous and 10 multiparous) were individually exposed, in a replicated crossover design, to each of 2 treatment diets (over 35-d periods): (1) a control TMR and (2) a control TMR plus 1 × 10(10) cfu/head per day of live yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077; Levucell SC20; Lallemand Animal Nutrition, Montreal, QC, Canada). Milk production, feeding, and rumination behavior were electronically monitored for each anima

Alteration of fasting heat production during fescue toxicosis in Holstein steers.

This study was designed to examine alteration of fasting heat production (FHP) during fescue toxicosis. Six ruminally cannulated Holstein steers (BW = 348 ± 13 kg) were BW-matched into pairs and used in a 2 period crossover design experiment. Each period consisted of 2 temperature segments, one each at 22 and 30°C. During each period, 1 steer per pair was ruminally dosed twice daily with 0.5 kg of ground endophyte-infected fescue seed (E+) and the other with ground endophyte-free fescue seed (E-) for 7 d. Steers on E- treatment were pair-fed to E+ steers offered alfalfa cubes at 1.5 × NEm. On

Effects of triglyceride accumulation on induction of urea synthesis by glucagon and dexamethasone in monolayer cultures of bovine hepatocytes.

Hepatocyte monolayer cultures from two preruminating and two ruminating calves were used to study the effects of triglyceride accumulation on induction of ureagenesis by glucagon plus dexamethasone. Whether hepatocytes from preruminating and ruminating calves respond similarly to triglyceride accumulation and hormonal treatment was also determined. Hepatocyte monolayer cultures were incubated from 24 to 48 h with a physiological mixture of nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA, 0 or 1.5 mM) and a hormone mixture containing glucagon plus dexamethasone (0 or 100 nM of both) added as a 2 x 2 factorial

Bovine Blood Xenotransfusion as a Therapeutic Approach for the Treatment of Acute Blood Loss in Sheep.

Hemotherapy in small ruminants is indicated for several acute and chronic conditions; however, its clinical use is often limited by the difficulty in identifying suitable donors, particularly regarding blood volume availability and hematologic compatibility. Xenotransfusion in small ruminants with bovine blood may represent a practical alternative in emergency situations involving severe anemia when homologous donors are unavailable. This study evaluated the clinical, hematologic, biochemical, and blood gas responses of sheep subjected to acute blood loss followed by bovine whole blood xenotra…

Curcumin modulates hepatic pyroptosis-autophagy crosstalk induced by aflatoxin B1 via rumen microbiota-blood-liver axis.

BACKGROUND: Aflatoxins, fungal secondary metabolites from Aspergillus species, primarily causes liver and gastrointestinal damage in ruminant. Curcumin, a plant polyphenol, has been shown to possess both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, in addition to regulatory effects on gut microbiota. However, research on curcumin's impact against AFB1 toxicity in ruminants is limited. This study aims to elucidate whether AFB1 induces hepatic pyroptosis and autophagy in ruminants via the rumen microbiota-blood-liver axis and the regulatory role of curcumin. The experimental design involves the…

N-Carbamoylglutamate enhances bull spermatogenesis via Paraprevotella-mediated vitamin B6 biosynthesis in rumen microbiota.

In brief: Emerging evidence suggests that gut microbial metabolites can influence male fertility, but how rumen microbiota regulate spermatogenesis in ruminants remains unclear. This study demonstrates that N-carbamoylglutamate promotes bull spermatogenesis through a rumen microbiota-vitamin B6 axis associated with Paraprevotella. Abstract:  N-Carbamoylglutamate (NCG), a functional analog of the arginine precursor, shows strong potential in enhancing spermatogenesis in bulls. In this study, dietary NCG supplementation significantly increased sperm density and motility in XiangXi yellow bulls, …

Molecular Prevalence, Genotypic Distribution and Zoonotic Potential of Enterocytozoon bieneusi in Hu Sheep and Goats in Southern Zhejiang Province, Eastern China.

Enterocytozoon bieneusi is a major zoonotic pathogen causing human microsporidiosis, with small ruminants serving as crucial reservoir hosts. Hu sheep and local goats are pillar livestock breeds in Zhejiang Province, yet no parallel comparative epidemiological data on E. bieneusi exist for sympatric small ruminants in southern Zhejiang, and the infection status in Hu sheep remains entirely uncharacterized. Here, a total of 297 fecal samples (159 Hu sheep, 138 goats) were collected from four administrative regions in southern Zhejiang from 2021 to 2023 and screened via nested PCR targeting the …

Molybdenum-Induced Oxidative and Inflammatory Injury and Metabolic Pathway Disruption in Goat Pancreas.

Background: Molybdenum (Mo) is an essential trace element for animals, but too much intake can cause adverse effects. Due to the metabolic characteristics of goats and other ruminants, they are more susceptible to the cumulative effects of Mo toxicity. A high Mo intake can cause multi-organ toxicity in ruminants, but the mechanism of damage to the pancreas is still unclear. The aim of this study was to systematically analyze the key regulatory pathways of pancreatic injury induced by Mo in goats using a metabolomics approach. Methods: Twenty male Yudong Black goats (22.34 ± 1.87 kg, six months…

Associations of rumen and rectum bacteria with the sustained productive performance of dairy cows.

The gut bacterial community is essential for maintaining lifelong health and productivity in ruminants, but the relationship between the gut microbiota and the sustained productivity of ruminants remains inadequately understood. In this study, we selected long-lived dairy cows in mid-lactation (≥5 parities) with different levels of milk production (n = 10). Significant differences were observed in the rumen bacterial structures between the two groups of dairy cows, whereas no significant differences were detected in the rectum bacterial communities. Additionally, there were no significant diff…

Orf, a Human Parapoxvirus Infection.

Despite being common worldwide, parapoxvirus infections are regarded as neglected zoonoses because their incidence is either unknown or grossly overestimated. In ruminants all throughout the world, parapoxvirus produces oral lesions and infectious pustular dermatitis. The pathogen is typically spread directly via items contaminated with parapoxvirus and indirectly via a near contact with dermatological lesions that contain the virus on affected animals. Animals infected with the parapoxvirus typically exhibit no clinical symptoms, and the mode of parapoxvirus transmission is occasionally uncle…
