The zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture - an anthropometric appraisal of surgical outcomes.

Before undergoing repair of zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures, most patients are worried about their postoperative appearance. Furthermo … upper lid height, upper and lower coverage, position of cornea to palpebra inferior, canthal tilt, scleral show, ectropion and entropion. It was clearly distinguished between operated and contralateral eyelid, and whether a transconjunctival or a subciliary approach was performed. Surgery per se significantly influenced eyelid deformities as measured by …

Opposite effects of glucagon and insulin on compensation for spectacle lenses in chicks.

PURPOSE: Chick eyes compensate for the defocus imposed by positive or negative spectacle lenses. Glucagon may signal the sign of defocus. Do insulin (or IGF-1) and glucagon act oppositely in controlling eye growth, as they do in metabolic pathways and in control of retinal neurogenesis? METHODS: Chicks, wearing lenses or diffusers or neither over both eyes, were injected with glucagon, a glucagon antagonist, insulin, or IGF-1 in one eye (saline in the other eye). Alternatively, chicks without lenses received insulin plus glucagon in one eye, and either glucagon or insulin in the fellow eye. O

Surgical debridement of scleral abscesses with concomitant resolution of the complicating exudative retinal detachment.

The author reports a case of severe infectious scleritis complicated by scleral abscesses and exudative retinal detachment. A 68-year-old woman with a history of pterygium excision in the left eye 13 years previously presented with pseudomonal scleritis. Despite aggressive therapy for the scleritis, the patient had complications of multifocal scleral abscesses and exudative retinal detachment. Following surgical debridement of scleral abscesses on three separate occasions and vigorous irrigation of the exposed scleral bed with antibiotics, the pathogen was eventually eradicated with subretinal…

Aqueous tube shunt to a preexisting episcleral encircling element in the treatment of complicated glaucomas.

PURPOSE: The treatment of glaucoma after scleral buckling surgery is often problematic. The authors investigated a series of patients in whom a silicone tube was implanted to shunt aqueous from the anterior segment to the fibrous capsule surrounding a previously placed silicone episcleral encircling element. METHODS: Thirteen patients were retrospectively reviewed. In each patient, a silicone tube was inserted through a small incision into the fibrous capsule overlying the scleral explant. In most patients, no attempt was made to secure the distal end of the tube to the silicone band. The pro…

The ocular manifestations of Wegener's granulomatosis. Fifteen years experience and review of the literature.

Ocular manifestations of Wegener's granulomatosis may occur secondary to contiguous granulomatous sinusitis or as a result of focal vasculitis. Contiguous granulomatous sinus disease causes nasolacrimal duct obstruction, proptosis and ocular muscle or optic nerve involvement. Focal vasculitis unrelated to contiguous upper respiratory tract disease is manifested by conjunctivitis, episcleritis, scleritis, corneoscleral ulceration, uveitis, and granulomatous vasculitis of the retina and optic nerve. A review of 29 cases of Wegener's granulomatosis and three cases of lymphomatoid granulomatosis s…
