The occurrence of multiple primary malignancies (MPM) in one patient is a rare but increasingly frequent event, partly due to medical advances in diagnosis and therapy. A number of theories have been proposed to explain MPM, but none have been proven. A key risk factor appears to be family history. We present the case of a 43-year-old male with multiple cancers who was first admitted to the hospital for an undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma/pleomorphic malignant fibrous histiocytoma (pG2T2bN0Mx stage III) of the right scapula in May 2009. The patient underwent three tumor resections in situ

BACKGROUND: Extranodal nasal-type natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma represents a rare entity, typically originating in the nasal cavity, palate or midfacial region. Signs and symptoms include non-specific rhinitis and/or sinusitis, nasal obstruction, epistaxis, facial swelling and development of deep necrotic ulceration in the midline of the palate, causing an oronasal defect. Differential diagnosis includes fungal infections, Wegener's granulomatosis, tertiary syphilis, other non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and malignant epithelial midline tumors.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 40-year-old ma

PURPOSE: We report a series of 5 patients (mean age, 41 y) presenting with ulnar styloid impingement syndrome (USIS) and treated by an oblique ulnar styloid osteotomy. The purpose of the study was to determine whether the osteotomy is an effective method for treating USIS.
METHODS: The diagnosis of USIS was made based on a history of ulnar-sided wrist pain supported by clinical and radiological findings. Clinical assessment included provocative tests to differentiate USIS from pain associated with ulnocarpal impaction syndrome. The ulnar styloid length was assessed with a posteroanterior X-ra

BACKGROUND: Adrenal injury secondary to abdominal trauma is quite rare because the adrenal gland is located deep in the retroperitoneum and is well cushioned by surrounding soft tissues. This report presents our experiences of managing patients with adrenal injury following abdominal blunt trauma.
METHODS: The medical records of 11 patients who had been treated for adrenal gland injury between January 1998 and June 2009 were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: Of the 11 patients, nine were male and two were female and the mean age was 31.5 years. The causes of trauma were motor vehicle accide

The evaluation of the upper airway (UA) includes the physical examination of pharyngeal structures and a number of imaging techniques that vary from the mostly used lateral cephalometry and computed tomography to more sophisticated methods such as tri-dimensional magnetic resonance image (MRI). Other complex techniques addressing UA collapsibility assessed by measurement of pharyngeal critical pressure and negative expiratory pressure however are not routinely performed. These methods provide information about anatomic abnormalities and the level of pharyngeal narrowing or collapse while the p

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery calcification (CAC) is prevalent among haemodialysis patients and predicts cardiovascular mortality. In addition to modifying traditional cardiovascular risk factors, therapy aimed at lowering serum phosphate and calcium-phosphate product has been advocated. Sodium thiosulfate, through its chelating property, removes calcium from precipitated minerals decreasing calcification burden in calcific uraemic arteriolopathy and soft tissue calcification. The effect of sodium thiosulfate on CAC in haemodialysis patients has never been studied.
METHODS: Eighty-seven stable

Congenital cranial teratomas are usually characterized by complete loss of the normal intracranial architecture. In the majority of reports, the tumors are associated with stillbirth, perinatal death, or significant morbidity after surgical resection. The few reported attempts at total or subtotal tumor resection have had poor outcomes, although there are rare reports of prolonged survival up to 3.5 years following resection of smaller tumors. Neonatal teratomas are rarely located in the scalp. In the literature, there were only a few patients who underwent surgery during the neonatal period w

Prognosis of patients suffering from secondary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma is dismal. Intracranial spread of a lymphoma arising in adjacent extranodal tissues is a rare event. A 32-year-old patient was diagnosed with progressive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) with extra- and intracranial localization. He complained of headache, left diplopia, marked rigidity of the neck muscles, and difficulty in swallowing and articulating words, caused by bilateral palsy of the XII cranial nerve. Computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) scans showed disease localizatio

Melorheostosis is a rare mesodermal disease affecting the skeleton and adjacent soft tissues. Often it is incidentally detected on radiographs. In the standard radiology and orthopedics literature, melorheostosis is described as a "flowing hyperostosis, resembling dripping candle wax as an incidental radiographic finding." A 22-year-old man presented with a 2-year history of right-hand pain. Radiologic evaluation of the hand showed massive sclerotic changes in the first and second metacarpal and phalangeal bones on the right side. Further radiographic evaluation of the right upper extremity re

Locked posterior shoulder dislocation is a rare injury and is often missed on examination, usually due to inadequate imaging and potentially resulting in significant loss of shoulder function. An important feature of the physical examination is identification of the patient's inability to externally rotate their arm. These injuries are associated with defects in the humeral head articular surface, also known as reverse Hill-Sachs lesions. Medium-sized defects involving 25% to 50% of the articular surface can be reconstructed using several methods, including subscapularis or lesser tuberosity t

Involvement of the sacroiliac joints is the first predominant finding of all seronegative spondylarthropathies (SpA) subsets, such as ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, and undifferentiated SpA. Although conventional radiography is indicated in the initial evaluation of sacroiliac joints diseases, it is often insensitive for demonstrating the early changes of sacroiliitis, so other imaging techniques typically are often necessary to clarify the pathology and for establishing the early diagnosis of seronegative SpA. Other imaging modalities, including computed tomography (CT), magneti

The practitioner placing dental implants has many options with respect to pre-implant radiographic assessment of the jaws. The advantages and disadvantages of the imaging modalities currently available for pre-implant imaging are discussed in some detail. Intra-oral and extra-oral radiographs are generally low dose but the information provided is limited as the images are not three-dimensional. Tomography is three-dimensional, but the image quality is highly variable. Computed tomography (CT) has been the gold standard for many years as the information provided is three-dimensional and general

BACKGROUND: Arteriovenous malformations of the scalp consist of abnormally connecting arterial feeding vessels and draining veins, devoid of a normal capillary bed within the subcutaneous fatty layer of the scalp. We present a case of a left temporal scalp AVM treated for aesthetic and pain-related concerns. A multidisciplinary approach combining endovascular AVM embolization and AVM excision with local flap reconstruction was chosen.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient presented with a progressive painful pulsatile mass in the left temporal region. On examination, there was no evidence of any faci
