Boosting data interpretation with GIBOOST to enhance visualization of complex high-dimensional data.

High-dimensional single-cell data analysis is crucial for understanding complex biological interactions, yet conventional dimensionality reduction methods (DRMs) often fail to preserve both global and local structures. Existing DRMs, such as t-distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE), Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Potential of Heat-diffusion for Affinity-based Transition Embedding (PHATE), optimize different visualization objectives, resulting in trade-offs between cluster separability, spatial organization, and temporal

Assessing the availability and scope of routine data on post-pregnancy family planning: A cross-sectional review of registers and reporting tools in 18 low- and middle-income countries.

Many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) include postpartum and postabortion family planning (PPFP/PAFP) in their national family planning (FP) commitments. Understanding what PPFP and PAFP data are available in routine health information systems (HIS) is important, as both county-level and global monitoring increasingly rely on these systems to track service delivery and scale-up, inform program improvements, and support accountability. This paper reviews the availability of PPFP and PAFP data elements in HIS across 18 LMICs. We analyzed 85 facility registers and 31 monthly summary forms

Implementing community-based interventions for the management of chronic conditions in low- and middle-income countries: A scoping review of qualitative evidence.

The rising prevalence of chronic diseases in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) poses significant challenges to already overburdened health systems. Community-based interventions are recognised as effective strategies for managing these conditions. However, implementing such interventions faces barriers that can hinder their effectiveness. This scoping review aims to assess qualitative studies examining barriers and facilitators to implementing community-based interventions for chronic disease management in LMICs. We searched six databases for studies published between 2013-2024. Eligibl

Magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy in neonatal encephalopathy: current consensus position and future opportunities.

Neonatal encephalopathy (NE) is a significant global health concern. It is a leading cause of long-term neurodevelopmental impairment, with hypoxic-ischaemic perinatal brain injury being the most common underlying contributor. Although therapeutic hypothermia has reduced mortality and improved outcomes for some affected infants, many survivors experience neurodevelopmental disability, including cerebral palsy and/or deficits in cognition, behaviour, and executive functioning. Early and accurate prognostication and identification of injury severity remain a challenge due to evolving clinical si

Programmatic approaches to screening for tuberculosis disease: a situational analysis of seven countries in the Western Pacific Region.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant public health challenge in the Western Pacific Region, which accounts for approximately 20% of the global TB burden. Despite effective diagnostic tools and treatment, many individuals with TB remain undiagnosed or unreported, particularly in high-burden countries. Systematic screening is a key strategy for identifying cases early and reducing transmission. This study presents a situational analysis of TB screening policies, practices, and challenges across seven high-burden countries in the region: Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Papua Ne

Public health surveillance through community health workers: a scoping review of evidence from 25 low-income and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: The last 3 years have witnessed global health challenges, ranging from the pandemics of COVID-19 and mpox (monkeypox) to the Ebola epidemic in Uganda. Public health surveillance is critical for preventing these outbreaks, yet surveillance systems in resource-constrained contexts struggle to provide timely disease reporting. Although community health workers (CHWs) support health systems in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), very little has been written about their role in supporting public health surveillance. This review identified the roles, impacts and challenges CH

A novel approach for screening standard anteroposterior pelvic radiographs in children.

UNLABELLED: Anteroposterior pelvic radiography is the first-line imaging modality for diagnosing developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Nonstandard radiographs with pelvic malposition make the correct diagnosis of DDH challenging. However, as the only method available for screening standard pelvic radiographs, traditional manual assessment is relatively laborious and potentially erroneous. We retrospectively collected 3,247 pelvic radiographs. There were 2,887 radiographs randomly selected to train and optimize the AI model. Then 362 radiographs were used to test the model's diagnostic perf

Shifting the dynamics: implementation of locally driven, mixed-methods modelling to inform schistosomiasis control and elimination activities.

INTRODUCTION: The integration of more diverse perspectives into the development of evidence for decision-making has been elusive, despite years of rhetoric to the contrary. This has led to cycles of population-based health interventions which have not delivered the promised results. The WHO most recently set a target for schistosomiasis elimination by 2030 and called for cross-cutting approaches to be driven by endemic countries themselves. The extent to which elimination is feasible within the time frame has been a subject of debate. METHODS: Systems maps were developed through participatory

Atypical functional connectome hierarchy impacts cognition in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is typically associated with hippocampal pathology. However, widespread network alterations are increasingly recognized and suggested to perturb cognitive function in multiple domains. Here we tested (1) whether TLE shows atypical cortical hierarchical organization, differentiating sensory and higher order systems; and (2) whether atypical hierarchy predicts cognitive impairment. METHODS: We studied 72 well-characterized drug-resistant TLE patients and 41 healthy controls, statistically matched for age and sex, using multimodal magnetic r
