Some volatile aromatic solvents have similar or opposite effects to anesthetics in the central nervous system. Like for anesthetics, the mechanisms of action involved are currently the subject of debate. This paper presents an in vivo study to determine whether direct binding or effects on membrane fluidity best explain how solvents counterbalance anesthesia's depression of the middle-ear reflex (MER). Rats were anesthetized with a mixture of ketamine and xylazine while also exposed to solvent vapors (toluene, ethylbenzene, or one of the three xylene isomers) and the amplitude of their MER was

BACKGROUND: Reinke's edema is a benign lesion of the vocal folds that affects chronic smokers, especially women. The voice becomes hoarse and virilized, and the treatment is microsurgery. However, even after surgery and smoking cessation, many patients remain with a deep and hoarse voice.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to compare pre- and postoperative acoustic and perceptual-auditory vocal analyses of women with Reinke's edema and of women in the control group, who were non-smokers.
METHODS: A total of 20 women with videolaryngoscopy diagnosis of Reinke's edema who underwent l

Crocodilians are among the most vocal non-avian reptiles. Adults of both sexes produce loud vocalizations known as 'bellows' year round, with the highest rate during the mating season. Although the specific function of these vocalizations remains unclear, they may advertise the caller's body size, because relative size differences strongly affect courtship and territorial behaviour in crocodilians. In mammals and birds, a common mechanism for producing honest acoustic signals of body size is via formant frequencies (vocal tract resonances). To our knowledge, formants have to date never been do

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) on the vocal quality using the dysphonia severity index (DSI). It was hypothesized that the objective vocal quality and other vocal characteristics are disordered in comparison with an age- and gender-matched control group. In addition, the acoustic vocal parameters were compared during three conditions: at rest, during normal stimulation, and raised stimulation. A significant relation between the amount of stimulation and the presence of disturbed acoustic parameters was hypothesized.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Determination of superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) involvement in addition to recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) paralysis in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) relies on traditional, qualitative laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) examination. It is necessary to develop a quantitative measurement that reflects the degree of denervation of the cricothyroid (CT) muscle. The present study aimed to establish a standard quantitative assessment of CT function in patients with UVFP by measuring the turn frequency.

Presbycusis, as the deterioration of hearing ability occurring with aging, can be manifested not only in a shift of hearing thresholds, but also in a deterioration of the temporal processing of acoustical signals, which may in elderly people result in degraded speech comprehension. In this study we assessed the age-related changes in the temporal processing of acoustical signals in the auditory system of pigmented rats (Long Evans strain). The temporal resolution was investigated in young adult (3-4 months) and old (30-34 months) rats by behavioral and electrophysiological methods: the rats' a

OBJECTIVES: Type II thyroplasty, or laryngeal framework surgery, is based on the hypothesis that the effect of adductor spasmodic dysphonia (AdSD) on the voice is due to excessively tight closure of the glottis, hampering phonation. Most of the previous, partially effective treatments have aimed to relieve this tight closure, including recurrent laryngeal nerve section or avulsion, extirpation of the adductor muscle, and botulinum toxin injection, which is currently the most popular. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of type II thyroplasty on aerodynamic and acoustic findings in

Spectral- and cepstral-based acoustic measures are preferable to time-based measures for accurately representing dysphonic voices during continuous speech. Although these measures show promising relationships to perceptual voice quality ratings, less is known regarding their ability to differentiate normal from dysphonic voice during continuous speech and the consistency of these measures across multiple utterances by the same speaker. The purpose of this study was to determine whether spectral moments of the long-term average spectrum (LTAS) (spectral mean, standard deviation, skewness, and k

INTRODUCTION: Swallowing sounds can be heard in the lower esophagus by xiphoid auscultation. We hypothesize that the xiphoid sound analysis could provide information concerning the integrity of the esophagogastric junction (EGJ), i.e., superposition of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and the diaphragm to assess clinical diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and results of Nissen fundoplication (NF). The aim was to evaluate the changes in sound parameters using our acoustic technique after reorganization of the EGJ after NF.
METHODS: For 21 patients with GERD and hiatus hern

The objective of the current study was to analyze the effects of rhinoseptoplasty on internal nasal dimensions and speech resonance of individuals with unilateral cleft lip and palate, estimated by acoustic rhinometry and nasometry, respectively. Twenty-one individuals (aged 15-46 years) with previously repaired unilateral cleft lip and palate were analyzed before (PRE), and 6 to 9 (POST1) and 12 to 18 months (POST2) after surgery. Acoustic rhinometry was used to measure the cross-sectional areas (CSAs) of segments corresponding to the nasal valve (CSA1), anterior portion (CSA2), and posterior

We compared the diagnostic values of multifrequency tympanometry (MFT) and conventional 226-Hz tympanometry in adults with otitis media with effusion (OME) and discuss whether the resonant frequency (RF) can be used as a reliable method in adults with OME. Prospective study was designed to compare the normal hearing group and the group with OME. In the OME group (n = 85), conductive or mixed hearing loss was found, air-bone gap was more than 10 dBHL, and acoustic reflex was not elicited. In the normal hearing group (n = 36), pure tone threshold was less than or equal to 15 dBHL and air-bone ga

This study was designed to evaluate the relationship between the temporal anticipation effects and motor control on repetitive tooth tapping movements (tooth tapping produced by open-close jaw movements) commanded by six frequencies of acoustic signals. Ten dentulous young adults were asked to perform tooth tapping movements to acoustic command signals at constant frequencies of 0.3, 0.8, 1.3, 1.8, 2.3 and 2.8 Hz. Surface electromyograms of the Masseter muscles, vertical component of the Mandibular kinesiograph, and acoustic signals were simultaneously recorded. Some parameters were measured f

OBJECTIVES: Facilitating the fine-tuning of advanced hearing aids requires information about the acoustic environment. The concept of a "trainable" hearing aid may provide a more direct approach to hearing aid fine-tuning if the aid user is allowed to control the most important fitting parameters in his/her own acoustic environments.
DESIGN: In a laboratory study, the concept of self-adjustment of the gain-frequency response was tested by 24 hearing aid users using four different controllers with a limited number of control functions. Research questions focused on the reproducibility of the f

Some evidence in the literature supports the topical application of papaverine to the cochlear nerve to prevent internal auditory artery vasospasm and cochlear ischemia as a method of enhancing the ability to preserve hearing during acoustic neuroma surgery. The authors report a case of transient facial nerve palsy that occurred after papaverine was topically applied during a hearing preservation acoustic neuroma removal. A 58-year-old woman presented with tinnitus and serviceable sensorineural hearing loss in her right ear (speech reception threshold 15 dB, speech discrimination score 100%).

PURPOSE: Developmental dyslexia, characterized by unexpected difficulty in reading, may involve a fundamental deficit in processing rapid acoustic stimuli. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) we previously reported that adults with developmental dyslexia have a disruption in neural response to rapid acoustic stimuli in left prefrontal cortex. Here we examined the neural correlates of rapid auditory processing in children.
METHODS: Whole-brain fMRI was performed on twenty-two children with developmental dyslexia and twenty-three typical-reading children while they listened to no
