Typhoid fever, a systemic infectious disease caused by Salmonella typhi, is classically characterized by fever, paradoxical bradycardia, abdominal pain, and a rose colored rash. This was a retrospective review of 21 confirmed cases over a 5-year period. Mean age was 32.6 years (range 2-60 years), and Mexico (7/21) and El Salvador (3/21) represented the most common countries of origin. Recent travel to an endemic area was noted in 14 patients. The most common complaints were fever (15/21), headache (10/21), abdominal pain (9/21), and diarrhea (6/21). Average duration of symptoms before presenta

To clarify the relationship between Strongyloides stercoralis, infection with human T cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1), and serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels, epidemiologic investigations of these two infections were conducted in inhabitants of Okinawa, a subtropical zone in Japan. Blood and feces samples were taken from 1,347 healthy inhabitants (554 males and 793 females). Antibody to HTLV-1 was measured by particle agglutination, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and Western blotting. The presence of Strongyloides was determined by direct detection of rhabditiform larvae in fresh

Strategies to detect Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) cases rely on serological screening of populations exposed to trypanosomes. In Guinea, mass medical screening surveys performed with the Card Agglutination Test for Trypanosomiasis have been progressively replaced by door-to-door approaches using Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) since 2016. However, RDTs availability represents a major concern and medical teams must often adapt, even in the absence of prior RDT performance evaluation. For the last 5 years, the Guinean HAT National Control Program had to combine three different RDTs accordin

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal carriage is the precursor for development of pneumococcal disease, and is also responsible for transmission of the organism from person-to-person. Individuals with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) are more likely to develop invasive disease with S. pneumoniae compared to their healthy counterparts and the presentation of disease in the former is usually abrupt and severe. In Africa, little is known about the pneumococcus in relation to people with SCD Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). The aim of the study was to investigate the epidemiology of pneumococcal carriage among SCD patient

This paper describes the course of infection and development of immunity in guinea-pigs after intradermal inoculation of Leishmania enriettii, and the use of in vivo and in vitro techniques to characterize the immunological response to infection and artificial immunization. Inoculation of 106 amastigotes into the ear produced a nodule which ulcerated in 2–3 weeks and healed in 8–16 weeks. 8% of animals developed cutaneous metastases which healed with the original lesions. Histology of the primary lesions showed epidermal necrosis overlying a mass of parasitized macrophages which, after 4–6 wee

INTRODUCTION: Toxoplasma gondii is a ubiquitous parasite of all species of mammals and birds (1). Most often the infection in the immunocompetent persons is asymptomatic. Symptoms (if present) are usually mild and self-limited. Infection in the fetus and immunodeficient patients may lead up to clinically severe and often fatal toxoplasmosis (2).
ETIOLOGY: Toxoplasma exists in three forms: oocysts, tissue cysts and tachyzoites. The definitive hosts of Toxoplasma are members of the cat family. They shed unsporulated oocysts in the feces. After sporulation oocysts become infectious. Tachyzoites

BACKGROUND: Grammatical development in children follows a relatively predictable sequence across languages; however, most evidence comes from Indo-European languages, particularly English. Azerbaijani-Turkish, an agglutinative Turkic language, remains understudied in terms of the order in which grammatical structures are acquired. Understanding typical acquisition sequences is essential for identifying children with developmental language disorder (DLD) in linguistically diverse populations.
AIMS: This study aimed to describe the receptive comprehension sequence of 28 grammatical structures i

Increasing resistance to first-line antibiotics used in the treatment of infections caused by Salmonella and Shigella species is emerging. Azithromycin presents a good alternative treatment option for Salmonella and Shigella infections. However, there are limited data regarding the susceptibility of azithromycin in Turkey. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the susceptibility of Salmonella and Shigella species to azithromycin, to determine and compare the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values and disk diffusion zone diameters. In addition, susceptibility to meropenem and first-line an

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Brucellosis is a common zoonotic disease worldwide. Because its symptoms are non-specific and laboratory findings vary, diagnosis remains challenging. Blood culture is still the gold standard for confirmation, but its yield is often limited. This study aimed to estimate blood-culture positivity among hospitalized male patients with newly diagnosed brucellosis and to identify clinical and laboratory factors independently associated with culture positivity within confirmed cases.
METHODS: We conducted a hospital-based retrospective study of 1,188 hospitalized men with

The study aimed to examine the link between genetic antibiotic resistance and the prevalence of multidrug-resistant Salmonella Enteritidis in Tunisia over six years (2014-2019). About 617 clinical samples (including stools, biopsies, abscesses, and urine) were collected and analyzed using serotyping (slide agglutination method), antimicrobial susceptibility testing (disk diffusion method), and molecular techniques (PCR) for detecting antibiotic resistance genes. A total of 231 Salmonella isolates were obtained, of which serotype Enteritidis accounted for 72.3% (167/231). The majority were obta

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a common cause of respiratory and invasive infections in humans. PCV13, a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine used globally, is highly effective against diseases caused by pneumococcal serotypes included in its formulation. However, one of them, the serotype 3 (ST3) is still being relatively commonly isolated from patients, suggesting an escape from vaccine-induced immunity. The thick capsule produced by ST3 facilitates bacterial evasion from the immune system. Additionally, host immune responses may influence the outcome of ST3 infection. Here

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal sepsis is an infection in newborns that may be caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses and has a high death and morbidity rate. The clinical presentation of sepsis may be rather general, making it challenging to make a diagnosis. While blood culture is the most accurate method to diagnose sepsis, it is also time-consuming. Because of this, it is crucial to locate other biomarkers like C-reactive protein (CRP), high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and procalcitonin (PCT) that may aid in early identification.
AIM: To learn about the bacterial composition of suspected

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is an endemic systemic infectious disease, the most common complication is bone and joint involvement. Sacroiliac joint and spinal joint are the most frequently involved sites in adults, but knee joint infection is rare, and acute infectious knee arthritis complicated by acute osteomyelitis is even extremely uncommon in adults. Here, we report two cases of acute septic knee arthritis complicated by acute osteomyelitis caused by Brucella melitensis (B. melitensis).
CASE PRESENTATION: Both patients had a history of traveling in animal husbandry areas within three months.
