We present BrainPainter, a software that automatically generates images of highlighted brain structures given a list of numbers corresponding to the output colours of each region. Compared to existing visualisation software (i.e. Freesurfer, SPM, 3D Slicer), BrainPainter has three key advantages: (1) it does not require the input data to be in a specialised format, allowing BrainPainter to be used in combination with any neuroimaging analysis tools, (2) it can visualise both cortical and subcortical structures and (3) it can be used to generate movies showing dynamic processes, e.g. propagatio

PURPOSE: Locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC) patients are prone to experience daily anatomical variations, which can lead to additional doses in organs-at-risk (OAR) during SBRT. A patient selection tool was developed to identify who may be at risk of exceeding dose tolerances, by quantifying the dosimetric impact of daily variations using an OAR motion model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 133 CT scans from 35 LAPC patients. By following a leave-one-out approach, an OAR motion model trained with the remaining 34 subjects variations was used to simulate organ deformations on

BACKGROUND: Slide tracheoplasty is the preferred approach for treating long-segment congenital tracheal stenosis (CTS). However, little research has been conducted on the tracheobronchial anatomy before and after slide tracheoplasties in patients with CTS.
METHODS: We reviewed 23 patients with CTS who received slide tracheoplasties. We measured the intrathoracic tracheal length and the carina angle from computed tomography images. To account for each patient's body size, we divided the intrathoracic tracheal length by the length of the thorax to obtain the trachea-thorax ratio (TTR). These me

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Endoscopic ultrasonography-guided pancreatic ductal intervention (EUS-PDI) serves as a rescue therapy in patients with failure of retrograde access to the pancreatic duct (PD) at the time of endoscopic retrograde pancreatography (ERP). We review our experience of this procedure.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study of patients who underwent EUS-PDI for an unsuccessful ERP and altered anatomy.
RESULTS: A total of 44 (65.9% male) patients underwent EUS-PDI with a mean age of 43.5 years, (range: 23-67). Transgastric rendezvous technique was carried out in 23/44 (52.3%), tr

BACKGROUND: Variable effects limit the efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) as a research and therapeutic tool. Conventional application of a fixed-dose of tDCS does not account for inter-individual differences in anatomy (e.g. skull thickness), which varies the amount of current reaching the brain. Individualised dose-control may reduce the variable effects of tDCS by reducing variability in electric field (E-field) intensities at a cortical target site.
OBJECTIVE: To characterise the variability in E-field intensity at a cortical site (left primary motor cortex; M1) an

UNLABELLED: Cranioplasty is performed to restore the function and anatomy of the skull. Many techniques are used, including replacement of the bone flap and reconstruction with autologous or synthetic materials. This study describes the complication profile of adult cranioplasty using a prospective national sample and identifies risk factors for 30-day morbidity.
METHODS: The American College of Surgeon's National Surgery Quality Improvement Project database for 2015-2016 was utilized. Cases were identified by current procedural terminology code, size, and type (autologous/alloplastic). χ2, F

BACKGROUND: Arterial disruption during brain surgery can cause devastating injuries to wide expanses of white and gray matter beyond the tumor resection cavity. Such damage may occur as a result of disrupting blood flow through en passage arteries. Identification of these arteries is critical to prevent unforeseen neurologic sequelae during brain tumor resection. In this study, we discuss one such artery, termed the artery of aphasia (AoA), which when disrupted can lead to receptive and expressive language deficits.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all patients undergoing an aw

Coronary reimplantation after neoaortic reconstruction (CRANR) in the arterial switch operation (ASO) allows easy selection of accurate coronary transfer sites in the distended neoaorta. However, neoaortic valve injury may occur during coronary reimplantation. We determined whether the CRANR procedure increased the incidence of aortic valve regurgitation (AR) after ASO. Between March 1994 and August 2017, 227 patients underwent ASO. Since September 2000 CRANR has been performed on 155 patients and open coronary reimplantation (OCR) on 72. Patients who had undergone aortocoronary flaps procedur

OBJECTIVE: The human optic chiasm comprises partially crossing optic nerve fibers. Here we used diffusion MRI (dMRI) for the in-vivo identification of the abnormally high proportion of crossing fibers found in the optic chiasm of people with albinism.
METHODS: In 9 individuals with albinism and 8 controls high-resolution 3T dMRI data was acquired and analyzed with a set of methods for signal modeling [Diffusion Tensor (DT) and Constrained Spherical Deconvolution (CSD)], tractography, and streamline filtering (LiFE, COMMIT, and SIFT2). OBJECTIVE: Rapid deployment surgical aortic valve replacement has emerged as an alternative to the contemporary sutured valve technique. A difference in transvalvular pressure has been observed clinically between RD-SAVR and contemporary SAVR. A mechanistic inquiry into the impact of the rapid deployment valve inflow frame design on the left ventricular outflow tract and valve hemodynamics is needed.
METHODS: A 23 mm EDWARDS INTUITY Elite rapid deployment valve and a control contemporary, sutured valve, a 23 mm Magna Ease valve, were implanted in an explanted human heart by an experienced car

The objectives of this study were to review the published literature and selected textbooks, to compare existing usage to that in Terminologia Anatomica, and to compile standardized anatomic nomenclature for the apical structures of the female pelvis. MEDLINE was searched from inception until May 30, 2017, based on 33 search terms generated by group consensus. Resulting abstracts were screened by 11 reviewers to identify pertinent studies reporting on apical female pelvic anatomy. Following additional focused screening for rarer terms and selective representative random sampling of the literat

BACKGROUND: In the biopsychosocial formulation of functional neurological (conversion) disorder (FND), little is known about relationships between social behavior and brain anatomy. We hypothesized that social behavior would relate to brain areas implicated in affiliative behaviors and that social network size would correlate with symptom severity and predisposing vulnerabilities in FND.
METHODS: This neuroimaging pilot probed how social network size, as measured by the Social Network Index, related to structural brain profiles in 23 patients with motor FND (15 woman and 8 men). FreeSurfer co

PURPOSE: To objectively measure the differential expansion of orbital fat and muscle volume in patients with thyroid eye disease.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, eligible participants were adults with clinical evidence of thyroid eye disease and high-resolution computed tomography scans of their orbits. Patients with a history of decompression surgery and/or medical or other conditions that could alter the orbital anatomy were excluded. Three dimensional reconstructions of the orbits allowed the calculation of the fat volume, muscle volume and bony orbital volume using the MIMICS imagin

BACKGROUND: The benefit of cardiovascular magnetic resonance Imaging (CMR) in assessing occupational risk is unknown. Pilots undergo frequent medical assessment for occult disease, which threatens incapacitation or distraction during flight. ECG and examination anomalies often lead to lengthy restriction, pending full investigation. CMR provides a sensitive, specific assessment of cardiac anatomy, tissue characterisation, perfusion defects and myocardial viability. We sought to determine if CMR, when added to standard care, would alter occupational outcome.

PURPOSE: Black Bone (BB) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a nonionizing imaging method and a recent alternative to computed tomography (CT) in the examination of cranial deformities. The purpose of this study was to compare BB-MRI and routine 3D-CT in the preoperative evaluation of patients with craniosynostosis.
METHODS: At our center, we have routinely performed preoperative CT of the skull and brain MRI for patients with clinical suspicion of craniosynostosis. We recently changed our MRI protocol into one that includes sequences for the evaluation of both brain anatomy and skull bone an

The organization and length of a muscle's fascicles imparts its contractile properties. Longer fascicles permit increased muscle excursion, whereas changes in fascicle orientation relate to the overall vector of contractile force. Collecting data on fascicle architecture has traditionally involved destructive and irreversible gross dissection. In recent years, however, new imaging modalities have permitted muscles and their fascicles to be visualized nondestructively. Here, we present data from a primate (Callithrix jacchus), in which, for the first time, individual muscle fascicles are digita

BACKGROUND: Portal placement is a key factor for the success of arthroscopic procedures, particularly in rotator cuff repair. We hypothesize that the acromial anatomy may strongly determine the position of the shoulder bony landmarks and limit the surgeon's freedom to position the arthroscopic approaches in direction towards the acromion. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relation between different acromial shapes and the freedom of movement of arthroscopic instruments relative to the rotator cuff from standardized arthroscopic portals in a laboratory study on 3D shoulder models.
