Association between Ultradian Rhythms of Body Temperature in Small Mammals and Earth's Crust Stress.

Association was assessed between the data harvested by a long-baseline laser interference deformograph and the dynamics of body temperature (BT) in hamsters deprived of natural daily light-darkness changes. The power spectral data revealed the positive correlation between simultaneous time series of hamster BT and the Earth's crust deformation (ECD). The superposed epoch analysis established an association between abrupt upstrokes of hamster BT and ECD increments. Thus, the direct relationships between BT dynamics (reflecting predominance of sympathetic part of autonomic nervous system) and EC…

[Dyspnea in post-COVID-19 patients: A review].

New coronavirus infection may lead to long-term consequences, particularly to post-COVID syndrome, one of the most common manifestations of which is dyspnea. Post-COVID-19 shortness of breath may persist from one to several months and even years that results in low quality of life of patients. The review highlights possible risk factors and causes of dyspnea in post-COVID period such as lung damage, cardiovascular pathology, hyperventilation syndrome, dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, detraining, anemia, etc. The authors present data about COVID-19-associated causes of dyspnea and s…

Co-existing Paraganglioma, Cholesteatoma, and Otomastoiditis With Overlapping Imaging Features: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Head and neck paragangliomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors arising from the autonomic nervous system. Imaging hallmarks of paragangliomas of the head and neck include an enhancing soft-tissue mass in the carotid space, jugular foramen, or tympanic cavity on computed tomography; a salt-and-pepper appearance on standard spin-echo magnetic resonance imaging; and an intense blush on angiography. Imaging studies depict the location and extent of tumor involvement, help determine the surgical approach, and predict operative morbidity and mortality. However, an atypical presentation of paraganglioma…

Autonomic dysfunction in autism: The roles of anxiety, depression, and stress.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is responsible for the functioning of the heart, bladder, pupils and several other bodily functions. Therefore, when the ANS functions abnormally, individuals can experience a number of physical symptoms, including dizziness, abnormal sweating and digestive difficulties. Currently, it is unclear if autistic adults experience ANS dysfunction. Therefore, in this study, we investigated whether autistic adults report more ANS-related physical symptoms, indicating greater ANS dysfunction, and whether this may be related to autism, or rather anxiety, depression, or…

Inherited Neuropathies.

The inherited neuropathies are a common and heterogeneous group of slowly progressive disorders affecting motor, sensory, and autonomic nerves. These hereditary conditions can be confined to the peripheral nervous system, termed the primary hereditary neuropathies, or can occur as part of a multisystem disease. Identification of systemic involvement is necessary to distinguish the primary and secondary hereditary neuropathies to prevent the misdiagnosis of potentially treatable entities. Recent genetic and technological advances have dramatically improved our understanding of the underlying pa

American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy guideline on the role of endoscopy in the management of acute colonic pseudo-obstruction and colonic volvulus.

Colonic volvulus and acute colonic pseudo-obstruction (ACPO) are 2 causes of benign large-bowel obstruction. Colonic volvulus occurs most commonly in the sigmoid colon as a result of bowel twisting along its mesenteric axis. In contrast, the exact pathophysiology of ACPO is poorly understood, with the prevailing hypothesis being altered regulation of colonic function by the autonomic nervous system resulting in colonic distention in the absence of mechanical blockage. Prompt diagnosis and intervention leads to improved outcomes for both diagnoses. Endoscopy may play a role in the evaluation an…

Peripheral nervous system involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus: a review of the evidence.

In the past years the peripheral nervous system (PNS) involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has received little attention despite its potential significant impact. The true prevalence of PNS in SLE reported in studies is variable and strongly influenced by American College of Rheumatology (ACR) case definition that includes seven PNS manifestations (acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, autonomic disorder, mononeuropathy, myasthenia gravis, cranial neuropathy, plexopathy and polyneuropathy). Other peripheral manifestations, such as chronic inflammatory demyelinat

Recent advances in central cardiovascular control: sex, ROS, gas and inflammation.

The central nervous system (CNS) in concert with the heart and vasculature is essential to maintaining cardiovascular (CV) homeostasis. In recent years, our understanding of CNS control of blood pressure regulation (and dysregulation leading to hypertension) has evolved substantially to include (i) the actions of signaling molecules that are not classically viewed as CV signaling molecules, some of which exert effects at CNS targets in a non-traditional manner, and (ii) CNS locations not traditionally viewed as central autonomic cardiovascular centers. This review summarizes recent work implic

[Extramotor disorders in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: multisystem disease?].

The purpose of this article is to review several studies on extramotor feature in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), its association with cognitive impairment, dementia, sensory and autonomic abnormalities suggesting that ALS is a multisystem disorder rather than a pure motor neuron disease. Evidence from neuroimaging, neuropsychological and histologic studies suggests that other brain regions can be involved in the pathologic process. However, the extent of the extramotor involvement remains unclear. A recent finding on the deposition of pathological TDP-43 (43 kDA transactivating responsiv

A severe neurological sequela in acute intermittent porphyria: presentation of a case from encephalopathy to quadriparesis.

Porphyrias present themselves with autonomic or peripheral neuropathy or central nervous system dysfunction. They are a varied group of inborn errors of metabolism that are characterized by specific inherited enzyme defects in haem biosynthesis. A patient whose mother was diagnosed as having porphyria was admitted to hospital because of her abdominal pains and dysuria. She had three generalized convulsions and, in a few hours, she lost the vision in both of her eyes. As the seizures continued, she became quadriparetic and fell into a coma after gradually losing consciousness. She improved but

The Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS): pathophysiology, diagnosis & management.

Postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS), characterized by orthostatic tachycardia in the absence of orthostatic hypotension, has been the focus of increasing clinical interest over the last 15 years 1. Patients with POTS complain of symptoms of tachycardia, exercise intolerance, lightheadedness, extreme fatigue, headache and mental clouding. Patients with POTS demonstrate a heart rate increase of >or=30 bpm with prolonged standing (5-30 minutes), often have high levels of upright plasma norepinephrine (reflecting sympathetic nervous system activation), and many patients have a low blood volume. Therapeutic effects of vagus nerve stimulation in epilepsy and implications for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a non-pharmacological therapy approved by the FDA for treatment of patients with partial-onset epilepsy. The most frequently encountered adverse effects typically occur during stimulation, are usually mild to moderate in severity, and resolve with reduction in current intensity or spontaneously over time. There are no apparent effects of VNS on vagally mediated visceral function. Though the precise mechanism of action of VNS remains unknown, available evidence suggests that central autonomic nervous system pathways are involved, which have also been implicated …

Physically abused children's regulation of attention in response to hostility.

The present study examines the effects of early emotional experiences on children's regulation or strategic control of attention in the presence of interpersonal hostility. Abused children's reactions to the unfolding of a realistic interpersonal emotional situation were measured through multiple methods including autonomic nervous system changes and overt behavioral performance. Although physically abused and non-physically abused 4-year-old children did not differ in terms of their baseline levels of arousal, marked differences in physically abused children's regulatory responses to backgrou…

[Multiple sclerosis with sensory disturbances and hyperhidrosis of the hand].

INTRODUCTION: Hyperhidrosis may result from brain, spinal cord or peripheral nervous system injuries. We report the case of a 26-year-old patient who presented with sensorial disorders and focal hyperhidrosis of the right hand. OBSERVATION: MRI revealed multiple lesions very suggestive of active demyelinization. A lesion in the left paramedian posterior portion of the pons was enhanced after gadolinium infusion. The diagnosis of multiple sclerosis was suggested by MRI data and oligoclonal IgG bands on cerebrospinal fluid electrophoresis. CONCLUSIONS: Focal hyperhidrosis may be due to a lesio

Intrathecal synthesis of anti-sulfatide IgG is associated with peripheral nerve disease in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Peripheral nervous system involvement in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) can take the form of an acute or chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, polyradiculopathy, mononeuropathy multiplex, or autonomic neuropathy. There is no widely held consensus on the etiology of PNS or other neurological complications associated with HIV infection. We report here that PNS disease in HIV-infected individuals is associated with intrathecal synthesis of an antibody directed against sulfatide, a major component of myelin. The anti-sulfatide antibody is also present nonspecifically in

Metastatic paraganglioma causing spinal cord compression.

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Paragangliomas are neoplasms that arise from the autonomic nervous system-associated paraganglia. Most often they are benign tumors. However, infrequently they have been reported to metastasize. Involvement of the spine is rare and usually is intradural at the level of the cauda equina. OBJECTIVES: The authors report two cases of metastatic paraganglioma to the spine, both of which resulted in myelopathy from extradural spinal cord compression. Also provided is a review of the literature. CONCLUSIONS: Paragangliomas rarely metastasize to the spine. Management of t…

The gene causing multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2).

Multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) types 1 and 2 are distinct dominantly inherited syndromes of cancer predisposition in man. MEN 1 involves the parathyroids, pituitary, and pancreatic islets; MEN 2 involves the thyroid C-cells, adrenal medulla and parathyroids. In some varieties of MEN 2 there are also developmental abnormalities of the autonomic nervous system of the gut. The MEN 1 predisposing gene has been mapped by linkage to chromosome 11q13, and it is likely that the gene will shortly be identified by positional cloning. The predisposing gene for MEN 2 has been shown to be the receptor …

[Comparative effectiveness of current pathogenetic methods of treating neurodermatitis].

The authors compare various present-day pathogenetic methods used in the treatment of 258 patients with disseminated neurodermatitis (81 cases with the atopic form and 177 ones with the nonatopic form). Clinical and laboratory studies have demonstrated the efficacy of adrenoblockers, pyrroxan and butyroxan, included in multiple-modality therapy for patients with manifest disorders of the autonomic nervous system. Combinations of glycyrrham and voltaren and decimetric wave exposure of the adrenal area have been also effective, as well as parmidine, an antibradykinin drug, in a daily dose of 2.0…
