PhysioFormer: Integrating multimodal physiological signals and symbolic regression for explainable affective state prediction.

As affective computing becomes increasingly crucial in health monitoring and psychological intervention, accurately identifying affective states is a key challenge. While traditional machine learning models have achieved some success in affective computation, their ability to handle complex, multimodal physiological signals is limited. Most affective computing tasks still rely heavily on traditional methods, with few deep learning models applied, particularly in multimodal signal processing. Given the importance of stress monitoring for mental health, developing a highly reliable and accurate

Evaluation of Neuroimaging Findings of Central Nervous System Complications in Heart Transplant Recipients.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, we presented neuroradiologic findings and diagnoses of neurologic complications in a series of heart transplant recipients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted at Başkent University Hospital. We searched the hospital and radiology databases and identified 109 heart transplant recipients. Thirty-one of these recipients had neuroradiologic evaluations secondary to presentation of neurologic symptoms after heart transplant, with 18 patients evaluated with computed tomography and 22 patients evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging (overlap of i

[Early clinical outcome after navigated total knee arthroplasty. Comparison with conventional implantation in TKA: a controlled and prospective analysis].

BACKGROUND: Navigated implantation of total knee prostheses has become more and more popular within the last decade in orthopaedic surgery. Although improved alignment after navigated knee surgery has been reported previously in the literature, only a few studies meet the criteria of a level-1 evidence-based medicine study. We present the results of a controlled and prospective study comparing early clinical outcomes after computer-assisted versus conventional implantation in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). METHODS: Within a 15-month period, all patients admitted for primary TKA were followed

On machine learning classification of otoneurological data.

A dataset including cases of six otoneurological diseases was analysed using machine learning methods to investigate the classification problem of these diseases and to compare the effectiveness of different methods for this data. Linear discriminant analysis was the best method and next multilayer perceptron neural networks provided that the data was input into a network in the form of principal components. Nearest neighbour searching, k-means clustering and Kohonen neural networks achieved almost as good results as the former, but decision trees slightly worse. Thus, these methods fared well

Neurologic complications of primary Sjögren's syndrome.

Although peripheral nervous system disease has been well documented in Sjögren's syndrome (SS), central nervous system (CNS) involvement is considered distinctly uncommon. Sixteen patients with primary SS and CNS disorders not attributable to other causes were the subjects of this study. Cerebral manifestations, both focal and diffuse, as well as spinal cord disease, were observed. Peripheral vasculitis occurred in 12 patients (75%), 83% of whom had anti-Ro(SSA) antibodies. The high proportion of patients with concomitant peripheral vasculitis, and the observed association with antibodies to t

Validation of stone-kidney size score to predict outcome and complications of pediatric percutaneous nephrolithotomy.

INTRODUCTION: The prevelance of urinary system stone disease in children is emphasizing the need for minimally invasive treatments to decrease morbidity and recurrence risk. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) has emerged as a preferred approach for pediatric patients with complex stones due to its minimally invasive nature, including miniaturized and vacuum-assisted access sheaths, advanced laser technology and tubeless and outpatient procedures. However, adult scoring systems have proven ineffective in predicting success and complications in pediatric PCNL. This highlights the need for speci

Checklist and quality assurance tools for integration of two radiation oncology information systems (ROISs).

BACKGROUND: Merging two radiation oncology information systems (ROISs) is often necessary due to system changes or hospital integrations. ROIS integration is a high-risk procedure, that requires clear procedural guidelines and comprehensive QA methods to ensure safe practice. PURPOSE: This paper presents checklists, procedures, and challenges associated with integrating a ROIS into a centralized system, providing procedural guidelines and QA methods. It also shares our experience of merging with one ROIS into another. METHOD: The integration process comprised five major components: machine i

Beyond the Spinal Canal.

Cross-sectional spinal imaging is common, and extraspinal findings are often incidentally identified during interpretation. Although some of these findings may cause symptoms that mimic a spinal disorder, the majority are entirely asymptomatic and incidental. It is essential that the radiologist not only identify those abnormalities that may have clinical significance but also recognize those that are clinically irrelevant and thereby prevent patients from being subjected to further unnecessary, expensive and potentially harmful interventions. This article focuses on those abnormalities that a

The neural basis of perceived intensity in natural and artificial touch.

Electrical stimulation of sensory nerves is a powerful tool for studying neural coding because it can activate neural populations in ways that natural stimulation cannot. Electrical stimulation of the nerve has also been used to restore sensation to patients who have suffered the loss of a limb. We have used long-term implanted electrical interfaces to elucidate the neural basis of perceived intensity in the sense of touch. To this end, we assessed the sensory correlates of neural firing rate and neuronal population recruitment independently by varying two parameters of nerve stimulation: puls

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor with Horner's syndrome: a case report.

We report on a 42-year-old woman with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) arising from the cervical sympathetic nerve. A collar incision and partial sternotomy were performed at the second intercostal space. The mass was spindle shaped and connected to the sympathetic trunk on the cranial and caudal sides, and it compressed the left carotid sheath on the median side. After the patient's uneventful recovery from surgery, adjuvant radiotherapy was administered to the area of resection. The patient remains well 5 years after surgery with no evidence of recurrence.

Machine learning method for knowledge discovery experimented with otoneurological data.

We have been interested in developing an otoneurological decision support system that supports diagnostics of vertigo diseases. In this study, we concentrate on testing its inference mechanism and knowledge discovery method. Knowledge is presented as patterns of classes. Each pattern includes attributes with weight and fitness values concerning the class. With the knowledge discovery method it is possible to form fitness values from data. Knowledge formation is based on frequency distributions of attributes. Knowledge formed by the knowledge discovery method is tested with two vertigo data set

Gastrointestinal: gastric metastases.

Laryngeal schwannomas are rare lesions that represent less than 1.5% of all benign laryngeal tumors. Its slow and submucosal growth may cause a delay in consultation and management. Herein, a case of right supraglottic schwannoma is diagnosed in a 34-year-old lady who was unconcerned about hoarseness for 10 years. She was referred to otorhinolaryngology clinic for assessment when hoarseness was detected during consultation for a gynecology surgery. Apart from hoarseness, there were no noisy breathing, shortness of breath or aspiration symptoms. Flexible nasopharyngolaryngoscopy showed a submuc

[Neurosarcoidosis].

Sarcoidosis is a chronic systemic disease of unknown causes characterized by noncauseating granuloma in various organs. Neurological involvement occurs in 5-6% of patients with sarcoidosis. Most patients with neurosarcoidosis have extraneurologic abnormalities and extraneurologic biopsies usually support the diagnosis, however, nearly half of the patients with neurosarcoidosis present with neurological manifestations without systemic symptoms. Several cases of isolated neurosarcoidosis have been reported, making the diagnosis difficult. Although several diagnostic criteria have been proposed,

[Neuropsychiatric involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus. Part 2: diagnostic and therapy].

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of neuropsychiatric lupus erythematosus (NPSLE) can be difficult and has to be differentiated from neurologic complications that result from hypertension, drugs, infection, uremia, and metabolic changes. DIAGNOSTICS: There is no single test which is diagnostic. Therefore, the clinical presentation, serologic tests and neuroimaging techniques have to be combined to support the diagnosis of cerebral lupus. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is routinely used with a sensitivity of 50-87%. However, the abnormalities such as white matter lesions or brain atrophy are nonspec

Nine-year follow-up study of heart rate variability in patients with Duchenne-type progressive muscular dystrophy.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the progression of autonomic dysfunction in patients with Duchenne-type progressive muscular dystrophy (DMD) over time by using heart rate variability. BACKGROUND: Although previous studies suggest the presence of autonomic dysfunction in patients with DMD, the precise cause is not known. On the other hand, it is well known that analysis of heart rate variability provides a useful, noninvasive means of quantifying autonomic activity. High frequency power is determined predominantly by the parasympathetic nervous system, whereas low freq

Unveiling the binding landscape of cinnamaldehyde with digestive proteases:An exploration of specific interactions and conformational dynamics.

Cinnamaldehyde (CMA) is a natural compound with health benefits that have demonstrated multiple biological effects in food and pharmacy. Here, the binding mechanism of CMA to trypsin and pepsin in vitro was systematically investigated by multispectral combined with computational simulations. Results showed that CMA with trypsin and pepsin was static quenching mechanism. Thermodynamic parameters, molecular docking and dynamics simulation analyses showed that hydrogen bonding and van der Waals force were the main interaction forces in the CMA-trypsin system, whereas the binding of the CMA-pepsin

An unusual potassium conductance protects Caenorhabditis elegans pharyngeal muscle rhythms against environmental noise.

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans feeds by rhythmic contraction and relaxation of a neuromuscular organ called the pharynx, which draws in and filters water and bacterial food. This behavior is driven by myogenic plateau potentials, long-lasting depolarizations of the pharyngeal muscle, which are timed by neuronal input from a dedicated pharyngeal nervous system. While the timing of these plateaus' initiation has received significant attention, their mechanisms of termination remain incompletely understood. In particular, it is unclear how plateaus resist early termination by hyperpolarizing
