Sphenoid sinus mucoceles are rare lesions. Those with intracranial extension were thought to be extremely rare in Western literature. We encountered three such cases within 1 year. These cases were confirmed on pathological examination to be pyoceles of the sphenoid sinus, extending to the sella and suprasellar region. Bilateral exophthalmos, papilledema, and severe headache were among the most consistent findings encountered. We report a case of the unusual panencephalopathic type of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in Taiwan. This 59-year-old woman presented in 1983 with typical clinical manifestations of CJD and died 16 months later. Postmortem examination revealed severe neuronal loss, spongiosis and gliosis extensively in cerebral cortex and striatum as well as in the white matter. We also report 6 other CJD patients seen from 1983 to 1991 at Veterans General Hospital-Taipei.

Ninety five consecutive children with kerosene oil poisoning were studied, the first 70 retrospectively (internal group) and the rest 25, prospectively (external group) over a period of 3 years and 8 months. A simple random survey of 9863 population out of the total 70,000 population is one slum pocket of Bombay revealed drug dependence in 104 persons. Out of 104, 83.65% smoked 'brown sugar' 10.68% used cannabis and 5.77% opium. Most of the addicts (95.2%) belonged to large families. Family history of alcoholism and drug abuse was present in 41.35%. Parental deprivation was additional contributing factor in 30.7%.

145 patients were diagnosed to have hereditary spherocytosis (HS) over a period of 25 years. Jaundice (66.9%), fever (65.5%), weakness (44.8%), and abdominal pain (35.8%) were the commonest complaints. 94.5% had splenomegaly (JP-17 cm) and 71.7% had hepatomegaly (JP-6 cm). This article summarizes the recommended strategies for surveillance and interventions in national dracunculiasis eradication programmes. In a retrospective study in rural Zaire, 10.2% of all deliveries were conducted by cesarean section. Common indications were contracted pelvis and uterine dysfunction (37%) and previous cesarean delivery (32%). Compared with normal delivery, mortality was higher after cesarean section. Cesarean section should only be performed by well-trained personnel and when vaginal delivery is deemed inappropriate.

Two hundred and thirty-six Guatemalan children aged 2-14 y were examined for subclinical vitamin A deficiency by use of conjunctival impression cytology (CIC). The feasibility of the technique and quality of a modified touch procedure were assessed. Neither lid speculum nor physical restraint in the form of a papoose board was used. Thirty cases of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia of varying etiology, severity and duration; and twenty six normal healthy newborns were subjected to various tests of cellular and humoral immunity.
