Tubular atrophy, interstitial fibrosis, and inflammation in type 2 diabetic db/db mice. An accelerated model of advanced diabetic nephropathy.

OBJECTIVE: Advanced diabetic nephropathy (DN) is difficult to address experimentally in mice because available models of DN lack global glomerulosclerosis and major tubulointerstitial pathology. Accelerating the development of DN in mice would be desirable for feasible experimental validation of potential targets that mediate the progression to late stage DN. METHODS: 6 week old male db/db mice underwent uninephrectomy and the development of nephropathy was compared to wild-type mice and sham-operated db/db mice. RESULTS: Uninephrectomy at young age was associated with increased albuminuria

Implication of Reg I in human pancreatic duct-like cells in vivo in the pathological pancreas and in vitro during exocrine dedifferentiation.

A feature associated frequently with the pathologic pancreas is the presence of tubular complexes produced by a phenotypic modulation of acinar cells that take on the characteristics of ductular cells. Since the type I Reg gene, an acinar cell product, is increased in the pancreas following an acinar injury, we aimed to evaluate whether the Reg I protein might be involved in this dedifferentiation process in the human pancreas. We studied duct-like structures in fixed human pathologic pancreatic tissues and human cells with a ductal phenotype obtained by culturing human exocrine preparations.

Pathogenicity and ultrastructural pathology of Eimeria debliecki (Douwes, 1921) in experimentally infected pigs.

It was confirmed, after experimental infection of 24 weaned pigs with different doses (200,000 and 4 mil.) of Eimeria debliecki oocysts that the developmental cycle of E. debliecki occurs in the anterior jejunum and after a high dose of oocysts also in the duodenum and anterior parts of the middle jejunum. Pathological changes characterized by a light atrophy of the villi, scarcely dispersed minute erosions of the epithelium in upper parts of the mucosa and an inflammatory response in the propria of the anterior jejunum were found in the area of the largest occurrence of developmental stages o

Toxicity of cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (II) (cisplatin) in the frog, Rana pipiens.

The toxicity of the anti-cancer drug cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (II) (cisplatin), at 2 to 40 mg per kg, was studied in the frog, Rana pipiens. The LD50 for the drug was approximately 17 mg per kg. Major non-nervous system toxicity occurred in the kidney. Renal failure was manifested as anasarca and increasing blood urea nitrogen (BUN). Histopathological changes included acute tubular necrosis and tubular dilatation, which were more severe at higher doses. Interstitial fibrosis occurred after prolonged survival after a single dose. Ultrastructurally, there was increased electron-dense materia

Efficacy of the Canabrava Ring (pupil expansion device) in cataract surgery for eyes with small pupils: the first 30 cases.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcomes of the first 30 cataract surgeries performed with a new disposable, injector-free, small-pupil expansion device. METHODS: This consecutive case series included 30 eyes from 29 patients who underwent cataract surgery using a new disposable small-pupil expansion device called the Canabrava Ring (AJL Ophthalmic S.A, Spain). It is the first iris expansion ring produced with indents that do not align with each other in the superior and inferior regions, resulting in a small vertical length (0.4 mm) that minimizes the risk of endothelial contact. All eyes had poorl

The Brainstem Tau Cytoskeletal Pathology of Alzheimer's Disease: A Brief Historical Overview and Description of its Anatomical Distribution Pattern, Evolutional Features, Pathogenetic and Clinical Relevance.

The human brainstem is involved in the regulation of the sleep/waking cycle and normal sleep architectonics and is crucial for the performance of a variety of somatomotor, vital autonomic, oculomotor, vestibular, auditory, ingestive and somatosensory functions. It harbors the origins of the ascending dopaminergic, cholinergic, noradrenergic, serotonergic systems, as well the home base of the descending serotonergic system. In contrast to the cerebral cortex the affection of the brainstem in Alzheimer's disease (AD) by the neurofibrillary or tau cytoskeletal pathology was recognized only approx

Visceral and tissular reactivity in acute heart failure due to supraventricular tachyarrhythmia in a young patient.

Observation of major pathological alterations in a young person involves etiological and clinical justifications, in order to properly assess, treat and control these conditions. The aim of this paper is to present severe, acute pathological lesions, installed in a young person, secondary to hypodiastolic heart failure, due to persistent supraventricular tachyarrhythmia, triggered by a post-traumatic external stimulus, with complete remission post-electrical conversion. Pathological and clinical modification are revealed, in a young person, shortly after a minor thoracic trauma, in the absence

The spectrum of arterial compression at the thoracic outlet.

OBJECTIVE: In the absence of ischemic events, arterial pathology at the thoracic outlet (TO) is rarely identified because findings of chronic arterial pathology may be masked by symptoms of neurogenic compression. This study describes the clinical presentations and significance of arterial compression at the TO. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of the clinical records and imaging studies of 41 patients with objective findings of arterial compression at the TO. Sixteen were diagnosed from 1990 to 2003, during which 284 patients underwent surgery for TO decompression with selective ar

Post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation and hydrocephalus in preterm infants: a five-year retrospective cohort study from a tertiary referral center.

BACKGROUND: Post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH) is a serious complication of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in preterm infants and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Although neonatal risk factors are well described, the contribution of maternal and perinatal factors remains inconsistent across studies. OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence, clinical characteristics, and independent predictors of PHH among preterm neonates with IVH, and to evaluate early outcomes in a tertiary referral center. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included preterm neonates (< 34 wee

Right Ventricular Outflow Tract Diameter for Event Prediction in Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy: Incremental Value Over Echocardiographic Free-Wall Strain.

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) dilatation is a phenotypic feature of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). The echocardiographic RVOT diameter is part of the 2010 Task Force Criteria and is widely measured in clinical practice. Nevertheless, few data exist on its prevalence, diagnostic value, and prognostic significance. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the association of RVOT diameter with adverse outcomes in ARVC patients without (primary prevention) or with (secondary prevention) previous ventricular arrhythmia (VA), identify the best RVOT diame

Lower prevalence of aortic dilatation among preemptive pediatric renal transplant recipients - A cross-sectional cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Aortic dilatation is a cardiovascular complication in pediatric renal transplant recipients and may have an increased risk of aortic dissection, aortic rupture, and death. Studies failed to show an association between blood pressure and aortic dilatation; however, 24-hours ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) was not performed. There was also no comparison between preemptive transplantation and dialysis. METHODS: After ethics approval, a retrospective cross-sectional study was performed on all prevalent pediatric renal transplant recipients from a single tertiary care cente

Meta-analysis Examining the Usefulness of Angiotensin Receptor blockers for the Prevention of Aortic Root Dilation in Patients With the Marfan Syndrome.

The Marfan syndrome (MFS) patients are highly predisposed to thoracic aortic aneurysm and/or dissection, with virtually every patient having evidence of aortic disease at some point during their lifetime. We conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the efficacy of angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) in slowing down the progression of aortic dilatation in MFS patients. PUBMED, EMBASE, and COCHRANE databases were searched for relevant articles published from inception to February 1, 2020. We included randomized clinical trials evaluating the effect of ARBs on aortic root size in patients with M

3-D assessment of gaze-induced eye shape deformations and downgaze-induced vitreous chamber volume increase in highly myopic eyes with staphyloma.

PURPOSE: To determine if the stress of normal eye movements results in gaze-induced globe deformations, vitreous chamber axial length and vitreous chamber axial volume (VCAV) change in highly myopic eyes. METHODS: A prospective imaging study was performed on 82 eyes of 43 patients with high myopia (>27 mm of axial length) with a clinical diagnosis of staphyloma. Three-dimensional MRI scans were acquired while subjects gazed in five directions (primary, nasal, temporal, superior and inferior). Surface renderings were generated, and a processing pipeline was created to automate alignment of the

High-frequency murine ultrasound provides enhanced metrics of BAPN-induced AAA growth.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), defined as a pathological expansion of the largest artery in the abdomen, is a common vascular disease that frequently leads to death if rupture occurs. Once diagnosed, clinicians typically evaluate the rupture risk based on maximum diameter of the aneurysm, a limited metric that is not accurate for all patients. In this study, we worked to evaluate additional distinguishing factors between growing and stable murine aneurysms toward the aim of eventually improving clinical rupture risk assessment. With the use of a relatively new mouse model that combines su

Risk of developing an abdominal aortic aneurysm after ectatic aorta detection from initial screening.

OBJECTIVE: Current abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) surveillance guidelines lack any follow-up recommendations after initial abdominal aortic screening diameter of less than 3.0 cm. Some reports have demonstrated patients with late AAA formation and late ruptures after initial ultrasound screening detection of patients with an aortic diameter of 2.5 to 2.9 cm (ectatic aorta). The purpose of this study was to determine ectatic aorta prevalence, AAA development, rupture risk, and risk factor profile in patients with detected ectatic aortas in a AAA screening program. METHODS: A retrospective cha
