Development of the vascular bed in the rabbit ear: scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts.

The development of the vascular bed in the rabbit ear was investigated using vascular corrosion casts from animals of various ages. Examination of the casts revealed that the arrangement of the major auricular arteries and veins was determined before birth and was maintained during postnatal growth of the ear. Furthermore, the number of arteries branching off the central ear artery and the lateral arteries did not increase with increasing ear length. Scanning electron microscopic examination of lateral segments of adult ear casts revealed many anastomoses between marginal arteries and veins. T…

Mycosis fungoides of the mastoid, middle ear, and CNS. Literature review of mycosis fungoides of the CNS.

Facial nerve paralysis developed in a man with tumor-stage mycosis fungoides (MF). Mastoidectomy disclosed that MF had involved the mastoid and middle ear. Meningeal lymphoma, confirmed by the finding of Sézary cells in the CSF, was subsequently established. Autopsy disclosed MF lymphoma in the leptomeninges, medulla, spinal cord, and cranial nerves. A unique feature was the formation of a communicating hydrocephalus. Case reports of 23 patients with MF of the CNS, including 21 autopsies, are reviewed. Practically all had tumor-stage or erythrodermic MF. Atypical mononuclear cells were found a…

Possible functional roles of Na+,K+-ATPase in the inner ear and their relevance to Ménière's disease.

This article reviews the functions of the enzyme Na+,K+-ATPase in epithelial tissues and discusses early and recent biochemical, physiologic and morphologic studies of the enzyme in the inner ear. The purpose of the investigation was to learn whether a relationship between perturbations in activity of the enzyme and Ménière's disease is possible. It is concluded that the preponderance of the evidence indicates that Na+,K+-ATPase plays a role in regulating ion transport into the scala media, but that the significance of the distribution of the enzyme along only one cell type (the marginal) in t…

Renal--skeletal--ear- and facial-anomalies in combination with the Mayer--Rokitansky--Küster (MRK) syndrome.

The combination of the Mayer--Rokitansky--Küster (MRK) syndrome with renal anomalies is well known (incidence: 36%). The combination with skeletal anomalies is also known (incidence: 10%). However, the coincidence with ear anomalies is rare, and the coincidence with facial anomalies is extremely rare. The combination of the MRK syndrome with renal, skeletal, ear and facial anomalies is described in a case report with a review of the literature. It is not only worthwhile to be alert for urinary tract anomalies in patients with the MRK syndrome, but also to study the skeletal and auditory system…

The comparative effects of prilocaine, lignocaine and cocaine on the response of the rabbit ear artery to adrenaline and noradrenaline.

The effects of prilocaine, lignocaine or cocaine together with either adrenaline or noradrenaline was tested by applying combinations of these preparations to an isolated rabbit ear artery and measuring changes in intra-arterial pressure. Potentiation of the response was greatest with combinations of local anaesthetic and adrenaline; with noradrenaline the response was significantly potentiated only when the lowest concentrations of cocaine were used. It is suggested that some of this effect could be attributed to the differential inhibition by the local anaesthetic agents of the neuronal upta…

Fetal ear malformations induced by maternal ingestion of thalidomide in the bonnet monkey (Macaca radiata).

Gross malformations of the external, middle, and internal ear were seen in fetal monkeys following maternal ingestion of thalidomide. Twenty-five pregnant bonnet monkeys (Macaca radiata) were each given a single oral dose of 10 mg/kg of thalidomide on day 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, or 29, or 30 mg/kg on day 25 or 28 of gestation. (Day of mating is assumed to be day zero of pregnancy). The skeletons, processed and stained with Alizarin Red S, were examined for changes in configuration and/or ossification of the ossicles and temporal bones. Bilateral temporal bones of one case, treated on day 24, were …

The effect of various topical antibiotic and antibacterial agents on the middle and inner ear of the guinea-pig.

The topical application of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory agents is used to reduce inflammation of the middle ear mucosa and irradicate infection. Many of the antibiotic and anti-inflammatory preparations so used contain compounds known to be or are potentially ototoxic. Eighteen antibiotic, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory compounds and four commonly used solvents were screened for the absence of ototoxicity and inflammation to the middle ear mucosa. All compounds were injected intra-tympanically and sensory hair cells loss recorded graphically. Inflammation of the middle ea…

[Determination of the impaired ear's frequency selectivity using psychoacoustical tuning curves (author's transl)].

An apparatus for clinical use is described by which simplified psychoacoustical tuning curves can be measured near 500 Hz and near 4 kHz. Data produced by four groups (normal hearing, conductive hearing loss, noise induced hearing loss and degenerative hearing loss) are separately averaged and compared. The first mentioned two groups as well as the third in the low frequency range show good frequency resolution, the others, however, show largely decreased frequency resolution.

Study of the classical and modified alternate binaural loudness balance tests in normal and pathological ears.

This study was carried out to examine recruitment of loudness measured by the classical and the modified, self-recording alternate binaural loudness balance tests in 20 normal subjects and in 14 patients with various kinds of ear pathology. In spite of individual variability, the modified method, when used as described in this study, does provide an indication of the presence or absence of loudness recruitment.

Experimental viral infections of the inner ear. I. Acute infections of the newborn hamster labyrinth.

Acute viral infections of the inner ear were produced in neonatal hamsters. Viruses were inoculated percutaneously through the temporal cartilage into the endolymphatic and perilymphatic spaces of the labyrinth or were inoculated intracerebrally to reach the perilymphatic spaces via the cochlear aqueduct. Selective vulnerability of inner ear structures was demonstrated using a variety of viruses. Influenza virus infected only the mesenchymal cells of the perilymphatic channels of the cochlea; mumps virus infected principally endolymphatic structures; herpes simplex virus infected primarily the…
