OBJECTIVES: HIV-infected patients using combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) have an increased cardiovascular risk. We aimed to identify the effects of HIV, ART, and lipodystrophy (LD) on carotid artery intima-media thickness (C-IMT), a surrogate measure of atherosclerosis, and arterial stiffness, a marker of cardiovascular risk.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a chronic disease of the oral cavity characterized by an inflammatory reaction followed by severe fibro-elastic changes. The treatment of three- or 4-part proximal humerus fractures is still a matter of scientific discussion. The following study presents the results of a combined procedure using limited invasive fixation techniques for reconstruction of the humerus head and retrograde intramedullary wiring with elastic nails for the treatment of displaced three- or 4-part fractures. A prospective study of 24 patients with 3-part and 4-part fractures was performed from September 1995 to December 1998. Combined biologic fixation for reconstruction of the humerus head, including intramedullary wiring, was utilized.

PURPOSE: To identify structural lesions in the wall of uterine arteries in hypertensive women.
METHODS: Twenty six patients who underwent an elective hysterectomy were selected and separated in two groups. Group 1 was formed by women with normal blood pressure and group 2 consisted of hypertensive patients without regular treatment. Two segments of the uterine artery were obtained from every patient shortly after surgery. The fragments were fixed, sliced and stained. We present 20 patients in whom drug therapy was associated with interstitial histiocytic infiltrates with variable degeneration of collagen and elastic fibers mimicking early lesions of granuloma annulare (GA). Most patients had a reproducible clinical presentation comprising erythematous-to-violaceous, nonpruritic plaques, often with an annular pattern, predominantly involving inner aspects of the arms, medial thighs and intertriginous areas. The most frequent clinical differential diagnoses included cutaneous T cell lymphoma, erythema annulare centrifigum (EAC), GA, and lupus erythematosus.
