Stimulation and inhibition of food intake in sheep by centrally-administered hypothalamic releasing factors.

Short-term effects of hypothalamic releasing factors on feeding behavior and digestive motility patterns were assessed in hay-fed sheep trained to eat more than half the total amount eaten over 8 h within the first 3 h after food presentation. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) given intracerebroventricularly (ICV, 30 ng/kg) or intravenously at higher doses (IV, 3 micrograms/kg) reduced food consumption by 20 p. cent. The ICV or IV TRH-induced reduction was associated with behavioral excitation and stimulation of antroduodenal motor activity without changes in water intake. The ovine corticot…

Is greater milk production associated with dairy cows who have a greater probability of ruminating while lying down?

The objective of this study was to determine whether associations exist between position while ruminating (lying vs. standing) and milk and component production in dairy cows. Data from 30 lactating Holstein cows were assembled from 2 studies in which cows were milked by automated milking system (AMS) and fed a partial mixed ration (PMR) in feed bins that recorded intake behavior. Rumination and lying behavior were monitored using automated neck- and leg-based sensors, respectively. Each cow was monitored over 2 separate 2-wk treatment periods. To estimate position while ruminating for each 2-

Citrate cross-feeding by Pseudomonas aeruginosa supports lasR mutant fitness.

Cross-feeding of metabolites between subpopulations can affect cell phenotypes and population-level behaviors. In chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung infections, subpopulations with loss-of-function (LOF) mutations in the lasR gene are common. LasR, a transcription factor often described for its role in virulence factor expression, also impacts metabolism, which, in turn, affects interactions between LasR+ and LasR- genotypes. Prior transcriptomic analyses suggested that citrate, a metabolite secreted by many cell types, induces virulence factor production when both genotypes are together. An

The Potential of Shortening the Adaptation of Nellore Cattle to High-Concentrate Diets Using Only Virginiamycin as Sole Feed Additive.

Feedlot cattle are usually adapted to high-concentrate diets containing sodium monensin (MON) in more than 14 days. However, for finishing diets with lower energy content, the use of MON during adaptation may hold dry matter intake (DMI), and virginiamycin (VM) may be an alternative. This study was designed to determine the potential of shortening the adaptation of Nellore cattle to high-concentrate diets using only VM as a sole feed additive relative to feedlot performance, feeding behavior, and ruminal and cecum morphometrics. The experiment was designed as a completely randomized block repl…

Barriers to access and utilization of eating disorder treatment among women.

Anorexia, bulimia, and other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED) are psychiatric disorders recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5). One difference of eating disorders compared to other psychiatric disorders is the physical effects of the disease. Although anorexia is easier to physically detect than bulimia and OSFED, many women remain undiagnosed and untreated. Even if an eating disorder is recognized by the individual, barriers to clinical diagnosis and treatment persist. This study examines the barriers to treatment among wome

The severe end of the spectrum: Hypoplastic left heart in Potocki-Lupski syndrome.

Potocki-Lupski syndrome (PTLS) is a recently described microduplication syndrome associated with duplication 17p11.2, including the RAI1 gene. Features of PTLS include hypotonia, feeding difficulties, failure to thrive, developmental delay and behavioral abnormalities including autistic spectrum disorder, anxiety, and inattention. Cardiovascular anomalies were not recognized as a feature of duplication 17p11.2 until 2007 when noted in over 50% of a clinically characterized cohort. We report a patient with hypoplastic left heart syndrome whose diagnosis of PTLS was delayed until a genetic evalu

A novel dexmedetomidine nasal spray for gastrointestinal recovery in pediatric laparoscopic hernia repair: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Preoperative anxiety is common in pediatric surgical patients and may delay postoperative recovery. Conventional intranasal or nebulized dexmedetomidine often requires off-label dilution and manual assembly, which can lead to dosing inconsistency and variable mucosal absorption. We evaluated a novel dexmedetomidine nasal spray in children undergoing laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. METHODS: In this study, 100 children aged 2–6 years scheduled for laparoscopic high ligation of the hernia sac for indirect inguinal hernia received either dexmedetomidine spray (Group D, n = 50) or sal

Spraying cooling room with essential oils: effects on milk, behavior and thermal comfort.

There is evidence of the benefits of essential oils (EOs) for improving the performance and health of dairy cows when supplied per diet, as opposed to using them as sprays. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate whether the spraying of eucalyptus and mint EOs in a cooling room alters the behavior and thermoregulatory responses of Jersey cows during the transition period. Fourteen cows were divided into treatment (spraying with EOs) and control (spraying with water only). Daily baths were performed in a cooling room for 14 min under summer conditions. The animals’ respiratory ra

Electroantennographic and Behavioral Evidence Identifies Carvone and IR3535 as Biting Deterrents Against Rhodnius prolixus (Stål, 1872).

Electroantennography (EAG) is a valuable approach for monitoring insect antennal responses to insecticidal and test compounds and may provide a preliminary screening method for identifying compounds with potential activity against medically important insect vectors. The objective of this study was to evaluate the EAG responses of Rhodnius prolixus to different xenobiotics and to compare these electrophysiological responses with host approach and protection against biting. Antennae from adult triatomines subjected to prolonged fasting (≥30 days) were exposed to the tested compounds. In parallel

Comparison of behavioral and physiological changes in postpartum healthy and inflammatory diseased cows.

During parturition, cows often experience intense pain and stress, which increases the risk of inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to compare the postpartum health status between healthy cows and those diagnoses with inflammatory diseases by examining behavioral and heart rate (HR) variability (HRV) changes, to provide information before the onset of disease. Eight Holstein cows were used in this study. HR, parameters of HRV (low-frequency power: LF; high-frequency power: HF; LF/HF ratio, and total power) and time budget of individual maintenance behaviors (standing, recumbency, feeding, r

Sodium-mediated plateau potentials in an identified decisional neuron contribute to feeding-related motor pattern genesis in Aplysia.

Motivated behaviors such as feeding depend on the functional properties of decision neurons to provide the flexibility required for behavioral adaptation. Here, we analyzed the ionic basis of the endogenous membrane properties of an identified decision neuron (B63) that drive radula biting cycles underlying food-seeking behavior in Aplysia. Each spontaneous bite cycle arises from the irregular triggering of a plateau-like potential and resultant bursting by rhythmic subthreshold oscillations in B63's membrane potential. In isolated buccal ganglion preparations, and after synaptic isolation, th

Olfactory-induced locomotion in lampreys.

The olfactory system allows animals to navigate in their environment to feed, mate, and escape predators. It is well established that odorant exposure or electrical stimulation of the olfactory system induces stereotyped motor responses in fishes. However, the neural circuitry responsible for the olfactomotor transformations is only beginning to be unraveled. A neural substrate eliciting motor responses to olfactory inputs was identified in the lamprey, a basal vertebrate used extensively to examine the neural mechanisms underlying sensorimotor transformations. Two pathways were discovered fro

Activation of ventral tegmental area neurotensin Receptor-1 neurons promotes weight loss.

Dopamine (DA) neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) modulate physical activity and feeding behaviors that are disrupted in obesity. Yet, the heterogeneity of VTA DA neurons has hindered determination of which ones might be leveraged to support weight loss. We hypothesized that increased activity in the subset of VTA DA neurons expressing neurotensin receptor-1 (NtsR1) might promote weight loss behaviors. To test this, we used Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drugs (DREADDs) to activate VTA NtsR1 neurons in normal weight and diet-induced obese mice. Acute activation of…
