Treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcers With Inforatio Technique to Promote Wound Healing: A Feasibility Trial.

Chronic foot ulcers have extensive consequences for diabetic patients' quality of life and increase risks of amputation and death. The aim of this trial was to assess the feasibility of conducting a larger clinical trial to evaluate the clinical effect of inforatio technique on healing of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). Inforatio technique is a novel minimal invasive procedure where small cuts are made on wound beds with punch biopsy tools. This study was a feasibility trial conducted at an outpatient wound care clinic at Zealand University Hospital. Twelve patients with DFUs were included. Durin

Can diet modulate trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) production? What do we know so far?

BACKGROUND: Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is a metabolite that has attracted attention due to its positive association with several chronic non-communicable diseases such as insulin resistance, atherosclerotic plaque formation, diabetes, cancer, heart failure, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, liver steatosis, cardiac fibrosis, endothelial injury, neural degeneration and Alzheimer's disease. TMAO production results from the fermentation by the gut microbiota of dietary nutrients such as choline and carnitine, which are transformed to trimethylamine (TMA) and converted into TMAO in the live

The association study between CYP20A1, CYP4F2, CYP2D6 gene polymorphisms and coronary heart disease risk in the Han population in southern China.

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a disease that seriously harms human health. Genetic factors seriously affect the CHD susceptibility. The CYP20A1, CYP4F2 and CYP2D6 are important drug metabolism enzymes in the human body. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore the association between CYP20A1, CYP4F2, CYP2D6 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and CHD risk in the Chinese Southern Han population. METHODS: Based on the 'case-control' experimental design (505 cases and 508 controls), we conducted an association study between 5 candidate SNPs selected from CYP20A1 (rs2043449), CYP4F2 (rs21

A comprehensive strategy for perioperative care of pancreaticoduodenectomy according to the risk stratification by pancreatic fistula and delayed gastric emptying.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is highly invasive with unsatisfactory postoperative complication rates. Nutritional and fluid management after major surgery attracts much attention with regard to the reduction in severe postoperative complications. We retrospectively analyzed PD cases and proposed a novel strategy for perioperative fluid and nutritional therapy according to the risk stratification by pancreatic fistula (PF) and delayed gastric emptying (DGE). METHODS: Between 2003 and 2018, 140 patients underwent PD at our institute of which 134 patients were enrolled. We

De-ubiquitination of p300 by USP12 Critically Enhances METTL3 Expression and Ang II-induced cardiac hypertrophy.

Stresses, such as neurohumoral activation, induced pathological cardiac hypertrophy is the main risk factor for heart failure. The ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) plays a key role in maintaining protein homeostasis and cardiac function. However, research on the role and mechanism of deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) in cardiac hypertrophy is limited. Here, we observe that the deubiquitinating enzyme ubiquitin-specific protease 12(USP12) is upregulated in Ang II-induced hypertrophic hearts and primary neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCMs). Inhibition of USP12 ameliorate Ang II-induced myocardial

An H2-infused, nitric oxide-producing functional beverage as a neuroprotective agent for TBIs and concussions.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a leading cause of death and disability. Sports-related TBIs are estimated to be more than several million per year. The pathophysiology of TBIs involves high levels of inflammation, oxidative stress, dysregulation of ion homeostasis, mitochondrial dysfunction, and apoptosis. There is also a reduction in cerebral blood flow, leading to hypoxia and reduced removal of metabolic waste, which further exacerbates the injury. There is currently no recognized effective medical treatment or intervention for TBIs, which may in part be due to the difficulty of drug de

Representing young men's experience of anorexia nervosa: a French-language case study.

This article analyses two young adult (YA) novels about young men's experience of anorexia nervosa (AN), within the dual contexts of medical humanities research into literary depictions of illness, and the broader field of YA literature about AN. While emphasising the importance of diverse literary narratives in order to raise awareness of the prevalence of AN in men and boys, and to contribute to the reduction of stigma, it also considers current research into the potentially harmful triggering effects of AN literature on vulnerable readers. It identifies Anne Percin's Point de côté (Side Sti

Protection from noise-induced cochlear synaptopathy by virally mediated overexpression of NT3.

Noise exposures causing only transient threshold shifts can destroy auditory-nerve synapses without damaging hair cells. Here, we asked whether virally mediated neurotrophin3 (NT3) overexpression can repair this damage. CBA/CaJ mice at 6 wks were injected unilaterally with adeno-associated virus (AAV) containing either NT3 or GFP genes, via the posterior semicircular canal, 3 wks prior to, or 5 hrs after, noise exposure. Controls included exposed animals receiving vehicle only, and unexposed animals receiving virus. Thresholds were measured 2 wks post-exposure, just before cochleas were harves

Does statin increase the risk of intracerebral hemorrhage in stroke survivors? A meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis.

BACKGROUND: It remains debatable whether statin increases the risk of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in poststroke patients. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE, and CENTRAL for randomized controlled trials. Trial sequential analysis (TSA) was conducted to assess the reliability and conclusiveness of the available evidence in the meta-analysis. To evaluate the overall effectiveness, the net composite endpoints were derived by totaling ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), myocardial infarction, and cardiovascular mortality. RESULTS: A total of 1

Role of Probiotics in Prophylaxis of Helicobacter pylori Infection.

Helicobacter pylori, a pathogenic bacterium, has been known to be the root cause of numerous gastrointestinal disorders. In patients showing symptoms of its infection, antibiotic therapy is a likely treatment. However, the high cost of antibiotic therapy, associated antibiotic resistance along with other adverse effects has led to the use of probiotics for Helicobacter pylori treatment. In recent times, probiotics have played an essential role as complementary prophylaxis for gastrointestinal diseases, thus minimizing antibiotics' usage and their side effects. Probiotics are live microbial age

Significant reduction of vascular reactivity with dantrolene and nimodipine in diabetic rats: a potential approach to cerebral vasospasm management in diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Diabetics have a higher risk of developing cerebral vasospasms (CVSPs) than non-diabetics. Current therapies are ineffective in reducing CVSPs, but a a combination of dantrolene and nimodipine may be a viable treatment. Considering the potentially harmful secondary effects of dantrolene, however, we evaluated the efficacy of 10 μM dantrolene compared to 50 μM dantrolene alone or in combination with 50 nM nimodipine. METHODS: Dose-response curves for the phenylephrine (PHE)-induced contraction and acetylcholine (ACh)-induced relaxation were performed on aortic rings from diabetic a

Phytase-Fe3O4 nanoparticles-loaded microcosms of silica for catalytic remediation of phytate-phosphorous from eutrophic water bodies.

Agriculture P management practices elevate the level of inorganic phosphates in soil that results in phosphorous (P) seepage into water-bodies. This is one of the key factors that have accelerated the menace of eutrophication. Phytic acid (phytate)-P-rich plant metabolite is infamous for its anti-nutrient activity and regularly oozing in to environment though discharge of mono-gastric animals. That has amplified the magnitudes of eutrophication. In this work, for catalysis of phytate-P, the metal-organic framework fabricated towards metal oxides (Fe3O4) and phytase in highly ordered microcosms

Mechanism of harm from left bundle branch block.

The impact of left bundle branch block (LBBB) on cardiac mechanical function ranges from minimal effect in some patients to marked reduction in left ventricular (LV) systolic function in others. It appears that this variability in part reflects differences in anatomical location of the bundle block. In most patients with LBBB and congestive heart failure, however, there is associated cardiac disease such as cardiomyopathies or coronary artery disease which contributes to LV dysfunction. The mechanism of harmful effect of LBBB on cardiac function is in-coordinated ventricular contractions which

Association of Obesity, Diabetes, and Risk of Tuberculosis: Two Population-Based Cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Mounting data have revealed that body mass index (BMI) is inversely associated with risk of active tuberculosis. The inverse association presents a "paradox" with regard to diabetes, because obesity is a major determinant of diabetes, and diabetes is a well-known risk factor for tuberculosis. METHODS: We conducted 2 population-based cohort studies involving 167392 participants. The main exposure was BMI and diabetes ascertained at baseline. Occurrence of incident tuberculosis was ascertained from Taiwan's National Tuberculosis Registry. We conducted a causal mediation analysis and
